Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast cancer surgeries in a Canadian population.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted breast cancer (BC) surgeries. Most studies showing reduced BC surgical volumes during the pandemic are from single institutions, few have described volume changes in different types of surgical procedures. This study aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on BC surgery volumes and types at a population level.

Effects of rural hospital closures on nurse staffing levels and health care utilization at nearby hospitals.

Our study examines the causal effect of rural hospital closures on nearby hospitals' nurse staffing levels and health care utilization. We use data from the 2014-2019 American Hospital Association Survey on nurse staffing level outcomes including licensed practical or vocational nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice nurses (APNs); and health care utilization outcomes, including inpatient and outpatient surgical operations and emergency department (ED) visits. Using propensity score matching and difference-in-differences (DID) methods, we find that rural hospital closures lead to an average increase of 37.

Decline in academic performance and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional survey among Sapienza University of Rome students.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges to the education system, leading to changes in student academic performance and mental health. The aim of this study was to evaluate variables relating to changes in academic performance and mental health during the pandemic.

Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study from 28 February 2022 to 13 April 2022, during the free SARS-CoV-2 screening campaign offered by Sapienza University of Rome.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Breast Cancer Care: A Qualitative Analysis of Surgeons' Perspectives.

Introduction: While studies have documented delays in breast cancer (BC) care during the COVID-19 pandemic due to healthcare restrictions, there have been no studies on the experiences, and, particularly, the challenges with providing care faced by breast surgeons during this unprecedented time. This paper aims to understand the perspectives of breast surgeons regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on BC care.

Methods: We used purposeful and snowball sampling to identify breast surgeons in Ontario, Canada.

Prevalence and predictors of hand hygiene compliance in clinical, surgical and intensive care unit wards: results of a second cross-sectional study at the Umberto I teaching hospital of Rome.

Introduction: Hand hygiene is the most cost-effective procedure for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections, but healthcare worker compliance is often insufficient.

Research Design: The objective of this second cross-sectional study was to quantify hand hygiene compliance among the healthcare workers of a large teaching hospital, to explore associated factors and to compare results to those of the 2021 study.

Methods: In 2022, educational sessions were conducted within each hospital department during which hospital healthcare workers received tailored feedback on the hand hygiene compliance registered in the previous year.

This report highlights the 2023-2028 American Association of Nurse Practitioners Research Agenda (AANP-RA), which focuses on the research goals of AANP as an organization and is based on its mission and strategic plan. The purpose of the AANP Research Agenda is to outline research priorities that advance the AANP Strategic Plan and concurrently address gaps in nursing science. American Association of Nurse Practitioners supports research studies that are rigorously designed and conducted using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches, as well as implementation science with the potential to positively impact both NP practice and patient health outcomes.

Keeping university open did not increase the risk of SARS-CoV-2 acquisition: A test negative case-control study among students.

Background: During the SARS-CoV-2 testing program offered through the RT-PCR test by Sapienza University of Rome, we conducted a test-negative case-control study to identify risk factors for acquiring SARS-CoV-2 infection among university students.

Methods: Each SARS-CoV-2-positive case detected was matched to two controls randomly selected from students who tested negative on the same day. 122 positive students and 244 negative students were enrolled in the study.

NP and PA transition to practice: A scoping review of fellowships and onboarding programs.

Objectives: Newly graduated NPs and physician associates/assistants (PAs) benefit from transition to practice (TTP) support to move successfully into practice. TTP programs (such as onboarding programs, fellowships, and residencies) hold promise for improving workforce outcomes. The purpose of this scoping review was to describe the literature regarding NP/PA TTP programs.

Aging in multiple sclerosis: from childhood to old age, etiopathogenesis, and unmet needs: a narrative review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) primarily affects adult females. However, in the last decades, rising incidence and prevalence have been observed for demographic extremes, such as pediatric-onset MS (POMS; occurring before 18 years of age) and late-onset MS (corresponding to an onset above 50 years). These categories show peculiar clinical-pathogenetic characteristics, aging processes and disease courses, therapeutic options, and unmet needs.

Mesenchymal Tumors of the Breast: Fibroblastic/Myofibroblastic Lesions and Other Lesions.

Mesenchymal breast tumors are a rare and diverse group of tumors that present some of the most challenging cases for multidisciplinary breast cancer teams. As a result of overlapping morphologies and a lack of large-scale studies on these tumors, practices are often heterogeneous and slow to evolve. Herein, we present a non-systematic review that focuses on progress, or lack thereof, in the field of mesenchymal breast tumors.

GG supplementation on eradication rate and dyspepsia in infection treated with three-in-one bismuth quadruple therapy.

Introduction: (Hp)-related dyspepsia has been related to gastroduodenal dysbiosis. The role of probiotic supplementation in the clinical management of Hp infection has been the object of several studies in terms of improvement of efficacy and tolerability of eradication treatments but data on their effects on the outcomes of post-eradication dyspepsia are lacking. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of GG (LGG) supplementation on bismuth quadruple therapy (BQT) in the clinical management of Hp-related infection both in terms of efficacy and tolerability and persistence of post-treatment dyspepsia.

Racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and survival of patients with breast cancer.

Background: The objective of this study was to determine the influence of race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) on breast cancer outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of Non-Hispanic Black (NHB), Non-Hispanic White (NHW), and Hispanic patients with non-metastatic breast cancer in the SEER cancer registry between 2007 and 2016.

Results: A total of 382,975 patients were identified.

Transition-to-practice programs for newly graduated advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants: a scoping review protocol.

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to map the evidence on transition-to-practice programs for newly graduated advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants, and describe how they differ. Additional objectives include summarizing what outcomes are evaluated and what gaps remain within the literature. By consolidating this information, health care administrators may more easily reference transition-to-practice methods to enhance their own programs for advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants.

Summary Background Data: Optimal surgical outcomes depend on teamwork, with surgeons and anesthesiologists forming two key components. There are sex and sex-based differences in interpersonal communication and medical practice which may contribute to patients' perioperative outcomes.

The Potential Role of Hypochlorhydria in the Development of Duodenal Dysbiosis: A Preliminary Report.

In recent years, the role of gastric and duodenal microbiota has acquired increasing importance in the homeostasis of the host, although, to date, most evidence concern the faecal microbiota. Indeed, the gastric, and duodenal microbiota are challenging to study, due to gastric acid, bile, digestive enzymes, and rapid transit time. Specifically, the gastric acid environment may influence their bacterial composition since the acid barrier protects against orally ingested microorganisms and leads to their inactivation before reaching the intestine.

Multidisciplinary Intervention in Radiation-Associated Angiosarcoma of the Breast: Patterns of Recurrence and Response to Treatment.

Background: Radiation-associated angiosarcoma (RAAS) of the breast is an aggressive malignancy affecting 1 in 1000 breast cancer patients. This study aimed to determine differences in treatments and outcomes for RAAS initially managed through a sarcoma multi-disciplinary team (SMDT) compared with an outside center (OC) and to describe outcomes after recurrence.

Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of breast RAAS between 2004 and 2019 were identified from our sarcoma database.

Apical lymphadenectomy during low ligation of the IMA during rectosigmoid resection for cancer.

Background: Low ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery with preservation of the left colic artery may decrease the risk of colorectal anastomotic ischemia compared to high ligation at its origin. Low ligation leaves apical nodes in situ and is therefore paired with apical lymphadenectomy. We sought to compare relevant oncologic outcomes between high ligation and low ligation plus apical lymphadenectomy in rectosigmoid resection for colorectal cancer.

Little is known about social mission within the context of nursing education. This article clarifies the role of social mission in nursing education, offers current applications, and identifies future opportunities to maximize social mission within nursing to foster a more just culture of health.

Bleeding Events in Patients 75 Years of Age and Older Under Long-term Anticoagulant Therapy: A Real-life Study.

Objective: To investigate the risk of bleeding events in older patients under oral anticoagulant with a 4-year survey of a catchment area with 197,722 inhabitants of whom 15,267 were on warfarin and 10,397 on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).

Methods: Patients presented to the Emergency Department with major bleeding were enrolled and stratified according to age ≥75 years and ongoing warfarin or DOACs. Primary endpoint was 1-month death.
