Background: Low levels of sensory noise applied to the skin through electrical stimulation (ES) can improve balance control through a mechanism called stochastic resonance (SR). Little is known regarding the extent subsensory ES can improve reactive control of balance after unanticipated balance perturbations and the best location where to apply the stimulation.

Research Questions: How efficient is subsensory ES in improving reactive control of balance following visual perturbations delivered in a virtual reality (VR) environment? 2) Does lower trunk stimulation have greater effects than lower legs stimulation?

Sepsis inhibits tumor growth in mice with cancer through Toll-like receptor 4-associated enhanced Natural Killer cell activity.

Sepsis-induced immune dysfunctions are likely to impact on malignant tumor growth. Sequential sepsis-then-cancer models of tumor transplantation in mice recovering from sepsis have shown that the post-septic immunosuppressive environment was able to promote tumor growth. We herein addressed the impact of sepsis on pre-established malignancy in a reverse cancer-then sepsis experimental model.

FES Cycling in Stroke: Novel Closed-Loop Algorithm Accommodates Differences in Functional Impairments.

Objective: The objective of this paper was to develop and test a novel control algorithm that enables stroke survivors to pedal a cycle in a desired cadence range despite varying levels of functional abilities after stroke.

Methods: A novel algorithm was developed which automatically adjusts 1) the intensity of functional electrical stimulation (FES) delivered to the leg muscles, and 2) the current delivered to an electric motor. The algorithm automatically switches between assistive, uncontrolled, and resistive modes to accommodate for differences in functional impairment, based on the mismatch between the desired and actual cadence.

Controlling the Cadence and Admittance of a Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycle.

For an individual suffering from a neurological condition, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or stroke, motorized functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycling is a rehabilitation strategy, which offers numerous health benefits. Motorized FES cycling is an example of physical human-robot interaction in which both systems must be controlled; the human is actuated by applying neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the large leg muscle groups, and the cycle is actuated through its onboard electric motor. While the rider is stimulated using a robust sliding-mode controller, the cycle utilizes an admittance controller to preserve rider safety.

Persistence of Integrase-Deficient Lentiviral Vectors Correlates with the Induction of STING-Independent CD8 T Cell Responses.

Lentiviruses are among the most promising viral vectors for in vivo gene delivery. To overcome the risk of insertional mutagenesis, integrase-deficient lentiviral vectors (IDLVs) have been developed. We show here that strong and persistent specific cytotoxic T cell (CTL) responses are induced by IDLVs, which persist several months after a single injection.

The National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events classification is the standard classification used by the physicians in oncology for reporting adverse events. This classification has evolved over the last years according to the emergence of new therapies. Reporting symptoms, quality of life (QoL) and toxicities via patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in clinical practice is not yet a standard of care, nevertheless many studies have been conducted recently to assess feasibility and impact of routine monitoring of PROs, which should enable for better management of toxicities and earlier detection of disease progression in a more patient-centered health care delivery system.

Distributed Repetitive Learning Control for Cooperative Cadence Tracking in Functional Electrical Stimulation Cycling.

Closed-loop control of functional electrical stimulation coupled with motorized assistance to induce cycling is a rehabilitative strategy that can improve the mobility of people with neurological conditions (NCs). However, robust control methods, which are currently pervasive in the cycling literature, have limited effectiveness due to the use of high stimulation intensity leading to accelerated fatigue during cycling protocols. This paper examines the design of a distributed repetitive learning controller (RLC) that commands an independent learning feedforward term to each of the six stimulated lower-limb muscle groups and an electric motor during the tracking of a periodic cadence trajectory.

[Development of a standardized guide for optimizing drug adherence information to be dispensed during a pharmaceutical counseling with a multiple myeloma patient: Final validation].

An initial validation of a standardized pharmaceutical counselling guide was carried out in a previous study to improve medication adherence in patients treated for multiple myeloma with oral anticancer therapies. The main objective of this work was the final validation of this guide with 10 naive patients. The main secondary objectives were to assess for the patient the evolution of knowledge about the treatment, understanding of the purpose of the pharmaceutical counselling, adherence to the tools.

A multidisciplinary professional working group selected a list of relevant medication adherence-related items that served as the framework for the design of the pharmaceutical counseling support materials in patient-accessible language.

Position and torque control via rehabilitation robot and functional electrical stimulation.

Two common rehabilitation therapies for individuals possessing neurological conditions are functional electrical stimulation (FES) and robotic assistance. This paper focuses on combining the two rehabilitation strategies for use on the biceps brachii muscle group. FES is used to elicit muscle contractions to actuate the forearm and a rehabilitation robot is used to challenge the muscle group in its efforts.

[Chemotherapy for colorectal cancer: Pragmatic assessment of prescription changes and relative dose intensity].

Introduction: Chemotherapy induced toxicities can generate changes in prescribing and relative dose intensity which have an impact on therapeutic efficacy.

Method: This is a prospective observational study performed in hepato-gastroenterology department for 6 months. All patients treated for colorectal cancer and beginning a protocol with at least one parenteral drug have been included.

Glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome (GLUT1-DS) leads to a wide range of neurological symptoms. Ketogenic diets are very efficient to control epilepsy and movement disorders. We tested a novel simple and rapid blood test in 30 patients with GLUT1-DS with predominant movement disorders, 18 patients with movement disorders attributed to other genetic defects, and 346 healthy controls.

An intein from Halobacterium salinarum can be isolated as an unspliced precursor protein with exogenous exteins after Escherichia coli overexpression. The intein promotes protein splicing and uncoupled N-terminal cleavage in vitro, conditional on incubation with NaCl or KCl at concentrations of >1.5 M.

Occupational exposure to noise in maxillofacial operating theatres: an initial prospective study.

Exposure to excessive noise could impair surgical performance and communication, and lead to long-term hearing loss, but it is only recently that studies on occupational exposure to noise in operating theatres have been published. The aim of this prospective study was to assess mean and peak levels of noise during maxillofacial operations. We found that both were comparable to those in other surgical specialties such as orthopaedics in which power tools are used.

Susceptibility of Snails to Infection with Schistosomes is influenced by Temperature and Expression of Heat Shock Proteins.

The freshwater snail, is the obligate intermediate host for the transmission of the parasitic trematode, the causative agent of the chronic debilitating neglected tropical disease, schistosomiasis. We showed previously that in juvenile snails, early and significant induction of stress manifested by the expression of stress proteins, Hsp 70, Hsp 90 and reverse transcriptase (RT) of the non- LTR retrotransposon, nimbus, is a characteristic feature of juvenile susceptible NMRI but not resistant BS-90 snails. These latter, however, could be rendered susceptible after mild heat shock at 32°C, revealing that resistance in the BS-90 resistant snail to schistosomes is a temperature dependent trait.

Hypersialorrhea in Wilson's Disease.

Hypersialorrhea, corresponding to excessive salivation is a symptom frequently reported in Wilson's disease, especially in its neurological form. The prevalence of this frequent complaint has not been often evaluated. During a 7-month period, 87 consecutive Wilson's disease patients answered to the simple question "do you have the sensation of excess saliva in your mouth?" to evaluate the frequency of this symptom.

Cytostatic Effect of Repeated Exposure to Simvastatin: A Mechanism for Chronic Myotoxicity Revealed by the Use of Mesodermal Progenitors Derived from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Statin treatment of hypercholesterolemia can lead to chronic myotoxicity which is, in most cases, alleviated by drug withdrawal. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of this adverse effect have been elusive, in particular because of the lack of in vitro models suitable for long-term exposures. We have taken advantage of the properties of human pluripotent stem cell-derived mesodermal precursors, that can be maintained unaltered in vitro for a long period of time, to develop a model of repeated exposures to simvastatin during more than 2 weeks.
