- A survey of 41 OSWs revealed they feel most confident in helping parents communicate with their children about illness and addressing co-parenting issues, but less confident in end-of-life discussions and supporting non-traditional households.
- The findings indicate a clear need for additional training for OSWs, especially regarding end-of-life care and adapting to diverse family structures, to better meet the psychosocial needs of these parents.
Custody concerns are a major source of psychosocial distress among single parents with life-limiting illness. Although children are increasingly living in diverse household structures, the current health care system is not designed to meet the unique needs of single parents or nontraditional families. Patients with unaddressed custody concerns can experience psychological suffering during treatment and at the end of life.
