How Does Nature Exposure Affect Adults With Symptoms of Mental Illness? A Meta-Analysis.

Existing research on the effects of nature exposure on the mental health of adults indicates that spending time in nature reduces depressive symptoms and stress, increases quality of life and mood and improves mental health. This meta-analysis aimed to answer the question: what are the effects of nature exposure on the social, mental and physical health of adults with symptoms of mental illness? The meta-analysis included all studies relevant to the study research questions which collected quantitative data on nature exposure using validated instruments for at least two time points on each participant and which were published between 1990 and 2020. Regarding the impact of nature exposure on adults with symptoms of mental illness, analyses showed significant, moderate effect sizes for all studies and smaller, but significant, effect sizes for studies with control groups Analyses also yielded critical information regarding the effect size of the type of nature dosage, nature setting, nature-based activity, key mental health outcomes and other factors.

Efficacy and Safety of Teprotumumab in Patients With Thyroid Eye Disease of Long Duration and Low Disease Activity.

Context: Early inflammatory thyroid eye disease (TED) can lead to symptomatic chronic disease, including disabling proptosis. Teprotumumab, an insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) inhibitor, previously demonstrated efficacy in acute, high-inflammation TED trials.

Objective: We present data from the first placebo-controlled trial with teprotumumab in chronic/low disease activity TED.

Tattoo-associated lacrimal gland enlargement and sarcoidosis.

Purpose: To describe a case of tattoo-associated sarcoidosis presenting with cutaneous findings of tattoo granulomas and ophthalmic manifestation of isolated bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement.

Observations: A 35-year-old female presented with bilateral upper eyelid swelling for over a year. She reported no associated episodes of ocular pain or visual decline since onset of eyelid edema.

Nutritional Status of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients and Post-transplant Outcomes.

This study investigated the relationship between nutritional status of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients pre-/post-transplant and outcomes post-transplant. A secondary data analysis was conducted of 18 patients 2-weeks pre-transplant and 3 weeks post-transplant. Nutrients/food servings analyzed from 24-dietary recalls were scored for diet quality, antioxidant status, and energy adequacy (≥75% of recommended targets).

Alemtuzumab-Induced Thyroid Eye Disease: A Comprehensive Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Purpose: To present 5 cases of alemtuzumab-induced thyroid eye disease (AI-TED) and review the literature to highlight the natural history, severity, and outcomes as compared with conventional thyroid eye disease (TED).

Methods: A multi-institutional retrospective case series of patients with AI-TED was compiled. Chart review evaluated for clinical characteristics, imaging findings, and treatment for AI-TED.

Transcutaneous retrobulbar amphotericin B for rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis: a multi-center retrospective comparative study.

Purpose: To assess whether transcutaneous retrobulbar amphotericin B injections (TRAMB) reduce exenteration rate without increasing mortality in rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM).

Methods: In this retrospective case-control study, 46 patients (51 eyes) with biopsy-proven ROCM were evaluated at 9 tertiary care institutions from 1998 to 2021. Patients were stratified by radiographic evidence of local orbital versus extensive involvement at presentation.

A Contemporary Review of the Role of Facial Prostheses in Complex Facial Reconstruction.

Background: Maxillofacial prostheses provide effective rehabilitation of complex facial defects as alternatives to surgical reconstruction. Although facial prostheses provide aesthetically pleasing reconstructions, multiple barriers exist that prevent their routine clinical use. The accessibility of facial prostheses is limited by the scarce supply of maxillofacial prosthodontists, significant time commitment and number of clinic appointments required of patients during prosthesis fabrication, short lifespan of prostheses, and limited outcomes data.

Neighbourhood socio-economic environment predicts adiposity and obesity risk in children under two.

Background: Neighbourhood socio-economic environment (SEE) is associated with obesity in older children and adults, but little is known about this relationship in younger children. Breastfeeding is an important preventative of adiposity in childhood, but its relationship with neighbourhood SEE is unknown.

Aims: We assessed differences in adiposity and obesity in children before age two by neighbourhood SEE, controlling for family socio-demographics and breastfeeding duration.

Teprotumumab (Tepezza) for Thyroid Eye Disease.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an immune mediated infiltration and inflammation of the orbital and periorbital soft tissues leading to facial disfigurement. Classically broken into two "phases," active inflammatory and quiescent, disease modifying therapy and surgical intervention are used to improve a number of clinical aspects of TED. Many medical modalities have been utilized to halt the inflammatory phase of the disease including steroids, orbital radiation, and targeted steroid-sparing chemotherapy.

Biomechanical and Physiological Evaluation of Respiratory Protective Equipment Application.

Purpose: Respiratory protective equipment is widely used in healthcare settings to protect clinicians whilst treating patients with COVID-19. However, their generic designs do not accommodate the variability in face shape across genders and ethnicities. Accordingly, they are regularly overtightened to compensate for a poor fit.

Lower eyelid margin reconstruction: results of five different techniques.

Purpose: This retrospective study was performed to examine surgical results of five different techniques for lower eyelid margin reconstruction after Mohs surgery: primary closure, semicircular flap, dermal matrix graft, sliding tarsal flap, and tarsoconjunctival flap.

Methods: Medical records were reviewed in 178 patients undergoing surgery between 2005 and 2020. Outcomes were evaluated (photographic review) by three oculoplastic observers masked to procedure type, both with and without knowledge of the eyelid defect.

Quantitative Analysis of Preoperative and Postoperative Photographs Posted on Social Media by Oculoplastic Surgeons.

Purpose: To investigate and quantitatively analyze preoperative and postoperative photographs posted on social media by oculoplastic surgeons.

Methods: Pre- and postoperative blepharoplasty photographs posted by oculoplastic surgeons on the social media platform Instagram were identified over a 4-month period. Photographs demonstrating a frontal pose of the periocular region were selected, and image analysis was performed to compare the preoperative and postoperative photographs.

Psychogenic Ptosis.

Purpose: Psychogenic ptosis is a rare ophthalmic manifestation of conversion disorder. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical parameters, etiology, psychological, and clinical aspects of psychogenic ptosis.

Methods: A retrospective case series was conducted of patients with psychogenic ptosis seen between 1990 to 2020.

Design and rationale for the supermarket and web-based intervention targeting nutrition (SuperWIN) for cardiovascular risk reduction trial.

Purpose: The prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing largely due to suboptimal dietary habits. It is not known whether individualized, supermarket-based, nutrition education delivered by registered dietitians, utilizing the advantages of the in-store and online environments, and electronically collected purchasing data, can increase dietary quality.

Methods And Results: The supermarket and web-based intervention targeting nutrition (SuperWIN) for cardiovascular risk reduction trial is a randomized, controlled dietary intervention study.

Comparison of neighborhood deprivation index and food desert status as environmental predictors of early childhood obesity.

Unlabelled: Nearly 14% of American children aged 2-5 have obesity, with higher rates in children from lower-income and Black families. While evidence connects neighborhood socioeconomic environment (SEE) and obesity in adults and adolescents, little is known of this relationship in young children. We compared measures of SEE and family-level socio-demographic factors as predictors of obesity at age two.

The forestecology R package for fitting and assessing neighborhood models of the effect of interspecific competition on the growth of trees.

Neighborhood competition models are powerful tools to measure the effect of interspecific competition. Statistical methods to ease the application of these models are currently lacking.We present the forestecology package providing methods to (a) specify neighborhood competition models, (b) evaluate the effect of competitor species identity using permutation tests, and (cs) measure model performance using spatial cross-validation.

Contralateral eyelid elevation following unilateral upper eyelid retraction repair.

Purpose: To report the influence of unilateral upper eyelid retraction repair on the upper eyelid position of the contralateral, non-operative side.

Methods: An IRB-approved retrospective chart review was performed to identify patients who underwent unilateral upper eyelid retraction repair. Patient demographics, etiology of upper eyelid retraction, previous surgeries, and periocular measurements from pre-operative and follow-up visits were reviewed.

Physical Activity, Sedentary Time, and Diet as Mediators of the Association Between TV Time and BMI in Youth.

Purpose: This study examined dietary indicators, sedentary time, and physical activity as potential mediators of the association between TV time and BMIz in youth.

Design: Cross-sectional study in 2 independent samples of youth.

Setting: Data collection occurred by mail and telephone for adolescents and either at home or in medical settings for children.

Surgical management of eyelid lesions in adult-onset asthma and periocular xanthogranuloma.

Medical therapy is the mainstay of initial treatment for periocular xanthogranulomas. Here we depict surgical management of biopsy-proven adult-onset asthma and periocular xanthogranuloma (AAPOX). This 27-year-old female presented with seven years of progressive bilateral periorbital swelling, weight gain, and severe asthma refractory to immunosuppressive therapy including methotrexate, rituximab, and cyclophosphamide.
