Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) is the most common cause of cervical cancer, but most infections are transient with lesions not progressing to cancer. There is a lack of specific biomarkers for early cancer risk stratification. This study aimed to explore the intrahost HPV16 genomic variation in longitudinal samples from HPV16-infected women with different cervical lesion severity (normal, low-grade, and high-grade).

The reintroduction of beavers to Scotland, via the Scottish Beaver Trial in Knapdale, is an example of a translocation that took place in the absence of genetic data for the founder individuals and resulted in a small and suspected to be genetically depauperate population. In this study we use a high-density SNP panel to assess the genetic impact of that initial translocation and the effect of subsequent reinforcement translocations using animals from a different genetic source to the original founders.

The method has been successfully validated and applied to the study of five carcinogenic high-risk (HR) HPV types (HPV16, 18, 31, 33, and 45). Here, we present TaME-seq2 with an updated laboratory workflow and bioinformatics pipeline.

These types differ in the proportion of viral minor nucleotide variants (MNVs) caused by APOBEC3 mutagenesis as well as integration frequencies. Whether these traits extend to other types remains uncertain.

We investigated the use of five privately-owned dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) as a non-invasive tool to determine the presence of rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), through sniffing out faecal pellets, using a yes/no training regime. We carried out 36 double-blind experimental trials per dog and hypothesised that dogs could discriminate the rock ptarmigan from similar species, such as black grouse (Tetrao tetrix), western capercaillie (T.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe island biogeography theory is one of the major theories in ecology, and its applicability to natural systems is well documented. The core model of the theory, the equilibrium model of island biogeography, predicts that species diversity on an island is positively related to the size of the island, but negatively related by the island's distance to the mainland. In recent years, ecologists have begun to apply this model when investigating genetic diversity, arguing that genetic and species diversity might be influenced by similar ecological processes.

Potential barriers between breeding sites can negatively influence the dispersal of individuals and increase genetic structure between populations. In this study, we genotyped 10 microsatellites for 334 marbled newts (Triturus marmoratus) at 11 different locations in Western France.

To our knowledge no microsatellite markers have ever been developed specifically for this species before. These new microsatellite markers will be useful for population genetics studies and for future conservation projects.

Here we describe the metabolic reconfiguration invoked by the soil microbe Pseudomonas fluorescens in a medium with millimolar amounts of aluminum (Al), iron (Fe), gallium (Ga), calcium (Ca), and zinc (Zn). While enzymes involved in the production of NADH were decreased, there was a marked increase in enzymatic activities dedicated to NADPH formation.

Materials And Methods: Pediatric and adult patients with dysfunctional CVCs were eligible to receive as much as 2 mL (2 mg) of intraluminal tenecteplase, which was left to dwell in the CVC lumen for a maximum of 120 minutes. If CVC function was not restored at 120 minutes, a second dose was instilled for an additional 120 minutes.
Purpose: To compare the overall survival (OS) of patients with resected stage III melanoma administered active specific immunotherapy and low-dose interferon alfa-2b (IFN-alpha-2b) with the OS achieved using high-dose IFN-alpha-2b.
Patients And Methods: An Ad Hoc Melanoma Working Group of 25 investigators treated 604 patients from April 1997 to January 2003. Patients were stratified by sex and number of nodes and were randomly assigned to receive either 2 years of treatment with active specific immunotherapy with allogeneic melanoma lysates and low-dose IFN-alpha-2b (arm 1) or high-dose IFN-alpha-2b alone for 1 year (arm 2).
Cytotoxic ribonucleases (RNases), such as ranpiranase, represent a novel mechanism-based approach to anticancer therapy. These relatively small proteins selectively attack malignant cells, triggering apoptotic response and inhibiting protein synthesis. Ranpirnase, originally isolated from oocytes of Rana pipiens, is a member of a family of endoribonucleases.

The role of systemic cytotoxic therapy for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial. The response rate (RR) and the median survival time (MST) are the two most frequently used parameters for the assessment of efficacy of the anti-cancer therapies. The relationship between the previously reported RRs and MSTs from published chemotherapy trials in patients with advanced NSCLC was examined using linear regression analysis.

Patients And Methods: Four hundred forty-five women with ER-negative node-positive breast cancer were enrolled by the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) over a period of 5 years (1979 to 1984). Randomized assignments were made to either 1 or 2 years of adjuvant CMFVP.
ONCONASE(R) (ONC), previously known as P-30 Protein, is a novel amphibian protein isolated from Rana pipiens eggs/early embryos (1) which demonstrates cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against several human tumor cell lines in vitro, as well as anti-tumor activity in vivo. Animal toxicology studies in rats and dogs revealed dose-dependent weight loss, some skeletal muscle and myocardial degenerative changes, a decrease in albumin and bilirubin levels in rats, and a dose-related elevation of serum transaminases and alkaline phosphatase in both species. A human weekly schedule Phase I study of intravenous bolus ONC was initiated, with dose levels ranging from 60 mug/m2 (anticipated human dose) to 960 mug/m2.

(i) What is the comparative utility of rubidazone versus adriamycin in remission induction? (ii) What is the role of prophylactic intrathecal therapy in AML? (iii) Does late intensification affect treatment outcome? (iv) Does maintenance with levamisole affect disease-free survival or overall survival? Among 611 evaluable patients, 329 (54%) achieved complete remission. There was no difference in the remission rate between those patients receiving rubidazone (54%) and those receiving adriamycin (54%) as part of the induction regimen.
