The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a global pandemic as declared by World Health Organization (WHO). The shikimate pathway enzyme 5-enolpyruvyl shikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) catalyzes the reaction involved in the production of amino acids essential for plant growth and survival. CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QD) have been produced at different times of synthesis (1, 2, and 4 h) using thiols as capping agents: mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) using water as a solvent. The produced CdTe QD were characterized by UV-vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and showed a relationship among reflux time, size, and spectroscopic properties. CdTe QD were shown to interact with thimerosal (TM), an organic mercury compound, and the PL intensity was effectively quenched, characterizing an ON-OFF process.

Background: Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) are old drugs used against malaria, rheumatism, inflammation in the joints, lupus, among others. These drugs showed positive results in preliminary scientific research for treatment of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Since the studies with CQ and HCQ are initial with small patient populations, it is not yet known whether there are adverse effects from the use of CQ and HCQ for patients infected with the coronavirus.

Tissue engineering has garnered significant attention for its potential to address the predominant modes of failure of small diameter vascular prostheses, namely mid-graft thrombosis and anastomotic intimal hyperplasia. In this review, we described two main features underpinning the promise of tissue-engineered vascular grafts: the incorporation of an antithrombogenic endothelium, and the generation of a structurally and biomechanically mimetic extracellular matrix. From the early attempts at the in-vitro endothelialization of vascular prostheses in the 1970s through to the ongoing clinical trials of fully tissue-engineered vascular grafts, the historical advancements and unresolved challenges that characterize the current state-of-the-art are summarized in a manner that establishes a guide for the development of an effective vascular prosthesis for small diameter arterial reconstruction.
