The hormone melatonin influences oral health through a variety of actions, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory and antitumour. Many of these melatonin functions are mediated by a family of membrane receptors expressed in the oral epithelium and salivary glands. Using immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry, recent studies have shown that the melatonin membrane receptors, MT1 and MT2, are present in rat and human salivary glands.

We report an interventional, non-randomized experience of OM-85 BV immunization in a group of 104 HIV-infected subjects presenting recurrent seasonal respiratory bacterial infections. We compared the number of respiratory events, the use of antibiotics and the cost related to antibiotics before (2005-2006) and after (2008-2011) the introduction of such intervention. The year 2007 was excluded from the analysis since half of the patients were immunized in that year in an exploratory approach.

In StereoElectroEncephaloGraphy (SEEG) procedures, intracerebral electrodes are implanted in order to identify the epileptogenic zone in drug-resistant epileptic patients. This paper presents an automatic multitrajectory planner that computes the best trajectory in terms of distance from vessels and guiding screws angle, once the candidate entry and target regions are quickly and roughly defined. The planning process is designed also to spare some brain structures, such as cella media and trigone of the lateral ventricles and brain stem.

Two water in oil emulsions composed by eudermic ingredients as glycerin, cocoa butter, almond oil and a variety of lipids, were enriched respectively with milk thistle dry extract (MT) or with a binary complex composed by MT and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP) (1:4 w/w) correspondent to 1% (w/w) in sylimarine in order to obtain two different emulsions designed for the skin delivery and determine influence of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin on the extract delivery and permeation. Uv-vis spectrophotometric analyses demonstrated that phytocomplex formation influences the finding of MT after the complexation process and the in vitro antioxidant activity. Further in vitro and ex vivo experiments demonstrated that the penetration capability of MT from formulations is strictly influenced by the phytocomplex able to control MT permeation; moreover phytocomplex increases flavonoids stability during the in vitro tests.

In recent years, robotic surgery is becoming a valid alternative in colorectal diseases treatment to laparoscopic and traditional open surgery. The most relevant reported technical advantages of the robotic surgery are 3D-view, tremor-filtering, seven degree-free motion and a higher comfortable setting for the surgeon. Both case series and comparative studies available in Literature report only short and mid-term outcomes.

Surgery for refractory extratemporal lobe epilepsy (ETLE) in the pediatric age group has been reported to be associated with a high percentage of failure and relapse. We performed a retrospective study of 53 consecutive patients with epilepsy onset before 12 years of age, who underwent, mostly at a pediatric age, an individually tailored ETLE surgery (32 in frontal and 21 in posterior cerebral areas) for pharmacoresistant seizures; these patients were selected and followed by a single national tertiary care pediatric center. Mean age at seizure onset was 3.

Classic Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is characterized by presence of flammeus nevus involving the first sensory branch of trigeminal nerve, ipsilateral leptomeningeal angiomatosis, and choroidal angioma. Sporadic cases of SWS without facial nevus (SWS type III) have been rarely reported. Here we report the clinical and neuroradiological findings of five patients with SWS type III and compare their findings with those described in the literature.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis or Lyell's syndrome is a life-threatening, drug-induced disorder characterized by severe epidermal injury. Although plasmapheresis is expensive and requires easy venous access, it could be included in the first-line treatment of toxic epidermal necrolysis. The method is safe and effective, providing prompt relief from pain and rapid cessation of necrolysis.

Salivary secretion is principally regulated by autonomic nerves. However, recent evidence from in vivo animal experiments suggests that gastrointestinal peptide hormones can also influence saliva production. The aim of the present study was to define the secretagogue activity of the gastrin-analogue pentagastrin in human salivary glands.

Allograft rejection during the first year after renal transplantation can lead to persistent allograft dysfunction and reduced long-term graft survival. Thus, it is important to define early predictors of kidney damage, less invasive than allograft biopsy. Urinary glycosaminoglycan/proteoglycan concentration and distribution, N-acetyl-β-(D)-glucosaminidase (NAG), and monokine induced by IFN-γ (MIG) levels were evaluated in the immediate post-transplant and during a 1-year follow-up.

New solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), composed of Compritol ATO888 (C) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP), were developed in order to study a new colon-specific formulation for diclofenac sodium (D) delivery. The prepared batches differ from each other by the molecular ratio between HP and D and by the composition of the matrix. Nanoparticles composed of an exclusively lipid matrix and nanoparticles with an oligomeric and lipid matrix were compared in order to establish the effect of both components on the drug delivery tests performed.

Background And Objective: Alteration of salivary gland secretion is one of the consequences of diabetes. In a recent study on the submandibular gland of diabetic subjects, we found changed expression of statherin, a salivary protein of fundamental importance in preserving tooth integrity, whose reduction was related with the high incidence of oral diseases in patients with diabetes. The goal of this report is to extend the study to human parotid gland and to compare the effects of diabetes on statherin expression with those previously described in submandibular gland.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to provide an overview of the recent data that emerged, further substantiating the critical role of innate immunity in systemic sclerosis (SSc).

Recent Findings: Driven by the evidence that newly identified SSc susceptibility genes are predominantly involved in immune regulation, we discuss the aberrant antigen presenting cell (APC) activation observed in the course of disease. In particular, we report the alternate activation of 'M1' and 'M2' macrophages reflecting different clinical phenotypes and the aberrant Toll-like receptor (TLR) response, whose effect on cytokine production is mostly evident in the early phases of disease; we especially highlight the increasing importance attributed to TLR3-mediated fibrosis.
