Definition of a European pre-vasectomy scoring system to identify patients at risk of vasectomy regret.

Introduction: Vasectomy is a widely used, safe, effective method of permanent contraception and contributes to healthy sexuality.

Aims: We have conducted a 3-step observational clinical study to develop a vasectomy regret risk score and guide patients and clinicians when discussing a vasectomy.

Methods: A 3-step approach has been followed.

Sarcoglycanopathies are heterogeneous proximo-distal diseases presenting severe muscle alterations. Although there are 6 different sarcoglycan isoforms, sarcoglycanopathies are caused exclusively by mutations in genes coding for one of the four sarcoglycan transmembrane proteins (alpha, beta, gamma and delta) forming the sarcoglycan complex (SGC) in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Little is known about the different roles of the SGC beyond the dystrophin glycoprotein complex (DGC) structural role.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a chronic syndrome, affecting about 1%-5% of children. OSAS is characterized by increased resistance and collapse of the upper airways, with different degrees of severity requiring interventions ranging from lifestyle modifications to surgery. Sympathetic activity is increased in OSAS, and the reduction of disease symptoms, occurring after adenotonsillectomy, correlates with biomarkers indicating a reduced sympathetic response.

A newly bat-borne hantavirus detected in Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest.

Background: Bat-borne hantaviruses have been identified worldwide but little is known about neotropical bats in the megadiverse biomes of the American continent. Although serological evidence has hinted at hantavirus circulation in Brazil, the scarce number of genomic detection represents a gap to understand viral diversity, prevalence, and ecology of bat-borne hantaviruses.

The objective of this study is to evaluate if medical treatment before assisted reproductive technology (ART) improves the results in infertile patients with adenomyosis. A literature search was performed with EMBASE, PubMed, and Cochrane. The primary outcome was clinical pregnancy rate (CPR).

The role of femoral head size in metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty: analysis of a cohort of 3813 patients with long term follow-up.

Metal-on-metal (MoM) large headed arthroplasties were suggested to decrease failure rates by means of reduced volumetric wear and enhanced implant stability. However, they caused high rates of revisions due to adverse reaction to metal debris, osteolysis, pseudotumor growth, and other issues. The study aims to present the long-term outcomes of MoM arthroplasties on a large cohort of patients, evaluating the impact of head sizes on survival rate.

Unlabelled: Quality of life (QoL) significantly improves in the short term after bariatric surgery (BS). However, evidence on the long-term QoL of patients with BS is limited.

Modern cementless acetabular cups in total hip arthroplasty performed for primary osteoarthritis: a comparative registry study.

Introduction: Comparative studies evaluating the different material and surface finishing of acetabular components in total hip arthroplasty (THA) are lacking. Using a regional arthroplasty registry, the survival rates and the hazard ratios of different cups in THA performed for primary osteoarthritis were assessed, using endpoints: (1) every cup failure, (2) cup aseptic loosening, (3) periprosthetic infection.

Materials And Methods: The inclusion criteria were: residing patients, THA for primary osteoarthritis, Delta-on-Delta bearings, head sizes 32 mm and 36 mm.

Introduction: Optimal bearing size in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has not been clearly ascertained, but large diameter ceramic balls may improve function and implant stability, with minimal concerns for wear. Delta ceramic-on-ceramic (COC) THA were stratified based on head diameter (32, 36 and 40 mm), aiming to assess: 1) survival rates, reasons for revision and hazard ratios for failure; 2) survival rates and hazard ratios for aseptic loosening, dislocation/primary instability, liner failure.

The franciscana dolphin is a small, vulnerable species often caught in artisanal gillnets. This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of their acoustic capabilities by using advanced equipment to collect a large dataset of wideband, continuous recordings. We examined the detailed acoustic signals of franciscana dolphins, comparing the sounds from rehabilitated dolphins in captivity with those of wild dolphins near fishing nets.

Skeletal muscle is a postmitotic tissue composed of contractile myofibers that are oriented and connected to different layers of connective tissue. Nevertheless, adult muscle fibers retain the capacity to regenerate in response to damage, activating the classical muscle stem cell compartment, namely, satellite cells (SCs), which are mitotically quiescent cells until required for growth or repair and are localized between the basal lamina and sarcolemma of myofibers. The transition of SCs from the quiescent state toward activation, commitment, and differentiation involves the genetic and epigenetic adaptation to novel biological functions, entailing dynamic changes in the protein expression profile.

Introduction: Vancouver B2 and B3 periprosthetic fractures (PFF) are associated with stem instability and often require a demanding stem implant revision (SR) or internal fixation (ORIF). Adherent cells perceive mechanical feedback from the underlying matrix and convert it into biochemical signals through a process known as mechanotransduction. The response to changes in the microenvironment relies on the cell's mechanical properties, including elasticity, which was recently identified as a biomarker for various diseases. Here, we propose the design, development, and characterization of a new system for the measurement of adherent cells' , a parameter correlated with cells' elasticity.

Photoproduction of K^{+}K^{-} Pairs in Ultraperipheral Collisions.

K^{+}K^{-} pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced ϕ(1020) mesons or directly as nonresonant K^{+}K^{-} pairs. Measurements of K^{+}K^{-} photoproduction probe the couplings between the ϕ(1020) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate if patient's gender significantly affected the long-term outcome of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and to provide a cross-gender comparison of a large patient sample from a single regional register.

Methods: The Registry of Prosthetic Orthopedic Implant of Emilia Romagna (RIPO) investigated all primary TKAs performed from July 2000 to December 2020 by collecting data of men and women separately. Primary bicompartmental and tricompartmental TKAs were included.

Conservative treatment of Peyronie's disease: a guide.

Purpose: To review the literature on the topic, to suggest a common line of treatment applicable across a wide community of specialists, and to contribute in maintaining the high level of interest in this disease.

Methods: A comprehensive and exhaustive review of the literature was performed, identifying hundreds of articles on the topic.

Results: Peyronie's disease is a condition that has been recognized, studied, and treated for centuries; despite this, if one excludes surgery in cases in which the deformity is stable, no clear treatment (or line of treatment) is available for complete relief of signs and symptoms.
