This review highlights the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and the dismal prognosis after acute coronary events when diabetes is present. Although there have been improvements in this area, diabetes still confers an increased risk. In order to achieve successful outcomes in individuals with diabetes, extensive treatment of risk factors and the use of all available evidence-based therapies are needed.

A panel of European experts on lipids and cardiovascular disease discussed clinical approaches to managing cardiovascular risk in clinical practice, including residual cardiovascular risk associated with lipid abnormalities, such as atherogenic dyslipidaemia (AD). A simplified definition of AD was proposed to enhance understanding of this condition, its prevalence, and its impact on cardiovascular risk. Atherogenic dyslipidaemia can be defined by high fasting triglyceride levels (≥2.

The aim of this study was to define the time structure of leg movements during sleep occurring with an intermovement interval (onset-to-onset) shorter than 10 s in patients with restless legs syndrome and controls, and to compare it to the structure of movements with intervals of 10-90 s or >90 s. Polysomnographic recordings of 141 untreated patients and 68 age-matched normal controls were analysed. All movements were detected and classified into three categories, separated by intervals of <10, 10-90 or >90 s.

Objective: To develop and validate a simple adjusted laparoscopic score to predict major postoperative complications after primary debulking surgery (PDS) in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC).

Methods: From January 2006 to June 2015, preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative outcome data from patients undergoing staging laparoscopy (S-LPS) before receiving PDS (n=555) were prospectively collected in an electronic database and retrospectively analyzed. Major complications were defined as levels 3 to 5 of MSKCC classification.

Study Objectives: Growing literature suggests that patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) may be at increased risk for hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is a known risk factor for clinical stroke. This study evaluated silent cerebral SVD by MRI in patients with RLS, in the absence of a history of previous clinical stroke or known stroke risk factors and taking into account disease duration.

Objective: To establishing whether neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) is superior primary debulking surgery (PDS) in terms of clinical outcome as well as peri-operative morbidity in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC) endowed with high tumour load (HTL).

Material And Methods: This is a single-Institution, superiority, randomised phase III trial enrolling supposed AEOC women. Patients considered pre-operatively eligible were triaged to staging laparoscopy to assess the predictive index (PI) of tumour load.

Aims: Impaired tissue vascularization is a major determinant of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the elderly. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may interfere with vascular repair, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Early outgrowth cells (EOCs) play an important role in endothelial repair.

Background: fertility sparing surgery is the first option for treatment of childbearing age women affected by borderline ovarian tumor (BOT). This review put in evidence the benefits and the risks of conservative surgery procedure. Moreover, the literature review is aimed to analyze the possibility of fertility sparing surgery in BOTs and to define a standard treatment in the management of this pathology during pregnancy.

Aims: Recent randomized trials suggest that intensive glycaemic control fails to reduce heart failure-related events in patients with diabetes. The molecular cues underlying persistent myocardial damage despite normoglycaemia restoration remain elusive. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small non-coding RNAs, orchestrate transcriptional programs implicated in adverse cardiac remodelling.

Experimental work has clearly demonstrated that hyperglycemia is able to derail molecular pathways favouring oxidative stress, inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Consistently, pooled analyses from prospective studies provide strong evidence that glycemic markers, namely glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), predict cardiovascular risk, with an increase of about 18% in risk for each 1% absolute increase in HbA1c concentration, regardless of classical risk factors. Although the importance of hyperglycemic burden on cardiovascular phenotype, normalization of blood glucose levels in patients with long-standing hyperglycemia does not seem to reduce macrovascular complications.

Age is one of the major risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). About one-fifth of the world population will be aged 65 or older by 2030, with an exponential increase in CVD prevalence. It is well established that environmental factors (overnutrition, smoking, pollution, sedentary lifestyles) may lead to premature defects in mitochondrial functionality, insulin signalling, endothelial homeostasis and redox balance, fostering early senescent features.

A meeting of European experts in cardiovascular (CV) disease and lipids was convened in Paris, France, on 10 November 2014 to discuss lipid profile, and in particular atherogenic dyslipidaemia (AD), and associated CV risk. Key points that were raised and discussed during the meeting are summarised in this paper, which also accounts for further discussion and agreement on these points by the group of experts. Elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) are commonly associated with a greater CV risk than low LDL-c levels, and are routinely managed with statins.
