Objective: To assess the eligibility criteria and trial characteristics among contemporary (2010-2019) randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that included infants born extremely preterm (<28 weeks of gestation) and to evaluate whether eligibility criteria result in underrepresentation of high-risk subgroups (eg, infants born at <24 weeks of gestation).
Study Design: PubMed and Scopus were searched January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019, with no language restrictions. RCTs with mean or median gestational ages at birth of <28 weeks of gestation were included.
Objective: To determine when infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have the first hearing screen performed, and thus inform targeted testing for cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related hearing loss.
Study Design: Retrospective review of electronic health records of infants admitted to a Level 4 outborn NICU and had a first hearing screen performed from 8/2016-8/2018.
Result: Among 1498 infants, 546 (36%) had a first hearing screen performed at age >21 days when a positive CMV PCR test cannot distinguish congenital from postnatal CMV acquisition.
A "reverse sequence syphilis screening" algorithm is widely used for syphilis testing. This retrospective study showed that most (65%) pregnant women with discordant screening results (treponemal multiplex flow immunoassay IgG+/rapid plasma reagin-) had a nonreactive confirmatory Treponema pallidum-particle agglutination assay, likely indicative of a false-positive reaction.
