Introduction: The process of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) breeding has affected negatively the fruit organoleptic properties and this is evident when comparing modern cultivars with heirloom varieties. Flavor of tomato fruit is determined by a complex combination of volatile and nonvolatile metabolites that is not yet understood.

Objectives: The aim of this work was to provide an alternative approach to exploring the relationship between tomato odour/taste and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Functional Surgery for Malignant Subungual Tumors: A Case Series and Literature Review.

Background And Objectives: Amputation is the conventional treatment for malignant subungual tumors (MSUTs), namely, subungual squamous cell carcinoma (SUSCC) and subungual melanoma (SUM). Functional surgery consisting of wide local excision (WLE) of the nail unit can preserve function without modifying prognosis in such cases. We present a series of MSUTs treated with WLE of the nail unit, describe the technique, and review its indications.

Contrasting metabolic profiles of tasty Andean varieties of tomato fruit in comparison with commercial ones.

Background: The fruits of most commercial tomato cultivars (Solanum lycopersicum L.) are deficient in flavour. In contrast, traditional 'criollo' tomato varieties are appreciated for fruit of excellent organoleptic quality.

Optimization of α-Terpineol production by the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene.

The main objective of this work is to present the optimization of the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene aiming at the production of α-terpineol by strains of fungal and yeasts previously isolated by our research group using the methodology of experimental design. New optimized experimental data on α-terpineol production by the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-β-pinene using newly isolated microorganisms are reported in this work. Conversion of about 1,700 mg/L was achieved when R-(+)-limonene was used as substrate and the newly isolated strain 05.

Microbial oxidation of (-)-α-pinene to verbenol production by newly isolated strains.

Verbenol is a bicyclicbicycle secondary allylic alcohol, with pronounced camphor and mint flavor notes, mainly used as food flavoring. This compound is also used to control harmful insects, and hence has potential for using in agriculture, and is an intermediate in the synthesis of valuable perfume and medicinal substances. This work is focused on the microbial oxidation of (-)-α-pinene to verbenol production.

Isolation and screening of microorganisms for R-(+)-limonene and (-)-beta-pinene biotransformation.

This work is focused on the biotransformation of R-(+)-limonene and (-)-beta-pinene to bioflavor production. To carry out the present study, 405 microorganisms were tested for their ability to bioconvert the substrates. From the isolated microorganisms, 193 were selected in the prescreening using mineral medium for limonene degradation.

Background: Studies on the reliability of teledermatology have shown considerable variability in results. Only one study has compared asynchronous and synchronous methods.

Objectives: This report describes DERMATEL, a prospective, randomized diagnostic-concordance study that sought to evaluate the relative advantages, in terms of reliability, of two remote consultation techniques.

[Telemedicine and teledermatology (II): current state of research on dermatology teleconsultations].

The rapid increase in the use of telemedicine makes a critical appraisal of these services essential. This article reviews the current evidence from studies of teledermatology with sufficiently rigorous methodology to allow reasonable conclusions to be drawn. The review is organized according to areas of research in teledermatology: reliability of diagnosis and management, accuracy, outcomes, costs, and satisfaction.

[Preliminary results of DERMATEL: prospective randomized study comparing synchronous and asynchronous modalities of teledermatology].

Introduction: There is considerable variability in the results of studies that evaluate diagnostic reliability in teledermatology. There are only two studies that compare the synchronous and asynchronous modalities of teleconsult in the same sample. We present the results of the pilot project DERMATEL, a study of diagnostic concordance that aims to increase the evidence of these aspects.

[Digital acrometastasis].

Cutaneous metastases are infrequent and in some cases represent the first manifestation of an unknown neoplasm. Acrally located metastases are particularly rare, and the prognosis is very poor, with a survival time of only a few months. Although the clinical presentation varies, they are generally confused with an infectious or inflammatory process, which delays diagnosis.

[Superficial angiomyxoma].

Superficial angiomyxomas are clinically variable, infrequent, benign skin lesions. They are usually located on the trunk, but can also appear on the lower limbs, head and neck. They are diagnosed histologically, and are characterized by the fact that they are poorly delimited, multinodular tumors, and by the presence of interstitial myxoid material with scanty cellularity.

[Normolipemic plane xanthomas and mycosis fungoides].

Diffuse normolipemic plane xanthomas are characterized by the presence of yellowish plaques on the eyelids, neck, upper trunk, buttocks and flexures. Histology shows foamy histiocytes in the dermis. Approximately half of all cases are associated with hematological disorders.

[Panniculitic T-cell lymphoma].

Panniculitic T-cell lymphoma is a rare, aggressive variant of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, with fewer than 100 cases described. The main problem is its diagnosis, as both the clinical and the histological features may simulate benign panniculitis. We present the case of a 34-year-old male patient, who had presented with an indurated plaque, sclerodermiform in appearance, on the front of the right thigh for 4 months, later accompanied by fever and constitutional symptoms.

[Cutaneous epithelioid hemangioendothelioma].

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor of intermediate aggressiveness, which usually appears in adults. It generally affects soft tissues and, less frequently, the lungs and liver. Diagnosis is by histological evaluation, and the epithelioid appearance of the neoplastic endothelial cells is typical, as is the tendency to form vascular channels.

Anticonvulsant drug hypersensitivity.

Background: Cutaneous adverse reactions are frequently described with anticonvulsant drugs, especially with aromatic drugs such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital. Patch tests could be useful for diagnosing this clinical picture. Hypersensitivity to several anticonvulsant drugs is common but unpredictable.

Dietary habits and geographic variation in stomach cancer mortality in Spain.

Following examination of the geographical pattern of stomach cancer incidence in Spain, the possible relationship between diet and stomach cancer has been assessed using an ecological model which looks into the relationship between the consumption of different foods and the nutrient intake in each of the 50 Spanish provinces during the period 1964-65, and the mortality rate for stomach cancer in these same 50 provinces during a period 20 years later (1984-86). The geographical pattern of stomach cancer mortality has been arrived at using the standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) calculated for each province. The per capita consumption of foods was obtained from the National Institute for Statistics and the calculation of nutrient intake was based on tables of nutritional composition.

[Latex allergy].

In 1979 the first case of contact urticaria to rubber gloves was reported in a patient with a positive skin prick test to latex. The use of articles containing rubber is widespread and this can explain the increasing frequency of allergic reactions to natural rubber latex. The symptoms may be localized like contact urticaria or systemic like angioedema, generalized urticaria or anaphylactic shock.

[Efficacy of salmeterol in patients with allergic bronchial asthma].

Inhaled beta 2-agonists play a central role in the treatment of acute bronchial asthma. A new long-acting beta 2-receptor agonist has recently become available: salmeterol. It improves FEV 1, has an antiinflammatory effect on bronchial airways, provides a strong protection against histamine-and allergen-triggered bronchoconstriction, thus leading to better control of asthmatic symptoms during day and night.
