Systems with broken continuous symmetry in ideal lattices cannot be rectified through rearrangement or deformation. Topological metamaterials featuring nontrivial, artificially induced phase transitions have emerged as pivotal constituents for engineering these topological defects, which, until now, have mostly been experimentally realized in linear or planar configurations. Buckminster Fuller lent his name to the C ball-shaped carbon allotrope, which is not only the roundest molecule in existence but also embodies 3D topological defects.

Distinguishing between primary (PID) and secondary (SID) immunodeficiencies, particularly in relation to hematological B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (B-CLPD), poses a major clinical challenge. We aimed to analyze and define the clinical and laboratory variables in SID patients associated with B-CLPD, identifying overlaps with late-onset PIDs, which could potentially improve diagnostic precision and prognostic assessment. We studied 37 clinical/laboratory variables in 151 SID patients with B-CLPD.

Article Synopsis
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) significantly impacts cardiovascular event recurrence in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), particularly in those without prior cardiovascular disease.
  • The study identified two groups based on the severity of OSA and utilized proteomics to analyze plasma proteins, revealing 24 differentially expressed proteins associated with OSA severity.
  • Bioinformatic analysis suggested that these proteins are involved in key molecular pathways related to immune function, cell signaling, and inflammation, linking OSA to adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Introduction: Among all patients with hypertension, those with resistant hypertension (RH) have the highest rates of subclinical organ damage (SOD). The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is high in RH patients, and it could contribute to SOD. We aimed to investigate how OSA and its treatment are related to SOD in a large cohort of RH patients.

Background: There is a close relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and resistant hypertension (RH). However, studies assessing the long-term effect of diagnosing and treating OSA on blood pressure (BP) control in these patients are lacking.

Methods: To address this gap, we recruited 478 RH patients from hypertension units and followed them prospectively after they were screened for OSA through a sleep study.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with a recurrent cardiovascular event (CVE) risk in patients with a first acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the pathological pathways by which OSA promotes this deleterious role are unknown. We aim to explore the proteomic profile associated with OSA that promote the recurrent CVE risk in severe OSA patients with ACS without previous cardiovascular diseases.

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity is based on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). The AHI is a simplistic measure that is inadequate for capturing disease severity and its consequences in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Deleterious effects of OSA have been suggested to influence the prognosis of specific endotypes of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Recent studies have evaluated the potential of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) as valuable biomarkers for characterizing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in males. The potential use of miRNAs as clinical indicators in females is unknown. The objective is to identify a set of miRNAs to be used as endogenous controls (ECs) in female patients with OSA.

The application of pressure has been demonstrated to induce intriguing phase transitions in topological nodal-line semimetals. In this work we analyze how uniaxial pressure affects the topological character of BaSn[Formula: see text], a Dirac nodal-line semimetal in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Using calculations based on the density functional theory and a model tight-binding Hamiltonian, we find the emergence of a second nodal line for pressures higher than 4 GPa.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Conversely, OSA has not been shown to increase recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This lack of homogeneity could suggest that the deleterious effect of OSA and its contribution to CVD could depend on specific patient profiles.

Background: Despite the improvement in the prognosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), substantial morbidity and mortality remain. We aimed to evaluate the effect of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and its treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the clinical evolution of patients with ACS.

Methods: We designed a multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial of patients with ACS at 15 hospitals in Spain.

Evaluation of microRNAs (miRNAs) could allow characterization of the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and help diagnose it more accurately. We aimed to examine circulating miRNA profiles to establish the differences between non-OSA and OSA patients. Additionally, we aimed to analyse the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on the miRNA profile.

Background And Objectives: Cultural barriers and patient-provider language discordance exert deleterious effects on patient care. One solution has been the integration of medical interpreters into the care of patients with limited English proficiency. While medical schools and residency programs have started developing training programs on how to work with medical interpreters, no similar endeavor has been reported by student-run free clinics.

We show that a conformal anomaly in Weyl and Dirac semimetals generates a bulk electric current perpendicular to a temperature gradient and the direction of a background magnetic field. The associated conductivity of this novel contribution to the Nernst effect is fixed by a beta function associated with the electric charge renormalization in the material. We discuss the experimental feasibility of the proposed phenomenon.

We show that, as happens in graphene, elastic deformations couple to the electronic degrees of freedom as pseudogauge fields in Weyl semimetals. We derive the form of the elastic gauge fields in a tight-binding model hosting Weyl nodes and see that this vector electron-phonon coupling is chiral, providing an example of axial gauge fields in three dimensions. As an example of the new response functions that arise associated with these elastic gauge fields, we derive a nonzero phonon Hall viscosity for the neutral system at zero temperature.

Agricultural regions in semi-arid to arid climates with associated saline wetlands are one of the most vulnerable environments to nitrate pollution. The Pétrola Basin was declared vulnerable to NO3(-) pollution by the Regional Government in 1998, and the hypersaline lake was classified as a heavily modified body of water. The study assessed groundwater NO3(-) through the use of multi-isotopic tracers (δ(15)N, δ(34)S, δ(13)C, δ(18)O) coupled to hydrochemistry in the aquifer connected to the eutrophic lake.
