Background And Aim: Diabetes has been shown in last decades to be associated with a significantly higher mortality among patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary PCI (PPCI). Therefore, the aim of current study was to evaluate the impact of diabetes on times delays, reperfusion and mortality in a contemporary STEMI population undergoing PPCI, including treatment during the COVID pandemic.

Methods And Results: The ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 is a large-scale retrospective multicenter registry involving PPCI centers from Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia and North-Africa, including patients treated from 1st of March until June 30, 2019 and 2020.

ZCCHC17 is a master regulator of synaptic gene expression and has recently been shown to play a role in splicing of neuronal mRNA. We previously showed that ZCCHC17 protein declines in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain tissue before there is significant gliosis and neuronal loss, that ZCCHC17 loss partially replicates observed splicing abnormalities in AD brain tissue, and that maintenance of ZCCHC17 levels is predicted to support cognitive resilience in AD. Here, we assessed the functional consequences of reduced ZCCHC17 expression in primary cortical neuronal cultures using siRNA knockdown.

Millennial-scale ice sheet variability (1-15 kyr periods) is well documented in the Quaternary, providing insight into critical atmosphere-ocean-cryosphere interactions that can inform the mechanism and pace of future climate change. Ice sheet variability at similar frequencies is comparatively less known and understood prior to the Quaternary during times, where higher atmospheric CO and warmer climates prevailed, and continental-scale ice sheets were largely restricted to Antarctica. In this study, we evaluate a high-resolution clast abundance dataset (ice-rafted debris) that captures East Antarctic ice sheet variability in the western Ross Sea during the early Miocene.

High-resolution ice core records from coastal Antarctica are particularly useful to inform our understanding of environmental changes and their drivers. Here, we present a decadally resolved record of sea-salt sodium (a proxy for open-ocean area) and non-sea salt calcium (a proxy for continental dust) from the well-dated Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) core, focusing on the time period between 40-26 ka BP. The RICE dust record exhibits an abrupt shift towards a higher mean dust concentration at 32 ka BP.

The interest of the fusion community in Pd-Ag membranes has grown in the last decades due to the high value of hydrogen permeability and the possibility of continuous operation, making it a promising technology when a gaseous stream of hydrogen isotopes must be recovered and separated from other impurities. This is the case of the Tritium Conditioning System (TCS) of the European fusion power plant demonstrator, called DEMO. This paper presents an experimental and numerical activity aimed at (i) assessing the Pd-Ag permeator performance under TCS-relevant conditions, (ii) validating a numerical tool for scale-up purposes, and (iii) carrying out a preliminary design of a TCS based on Pd-Ag membranes.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduced the number of primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PPCIs) for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients by 16% in 2020 compared to 2019.
  • Despite this reduction affecting both genders equally, 30-day mortality rates increased notably for female patients during the pandemic, while male patients did not show a significant change.
  • The analysis highlights the importance of addressing gender-specific outcomes in cardiac care during public health crises.

Article Synopsis
  • The "smoking paradox" refers to lower mortality rates in smokers among STEMI patients, particularly in the context of modern primary PCI protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A large retrospective study revealed that among 16,083 STEMI patients, active smokers had better postprocedural blood flow and lower mortality rates compared to both non-smokers and previous smokers.
  • The findings suggest that despite initial challenges in treatment, active smoking was linked to improved heart health outcomes in this patient population, indicating the need for further investigation into this unexpected relationship.

Unlabelled: Quality of life (QOL) outcome is an ideal method for determining the efficacy of a surgical treatment. In children operated for pilonidal sinus disease (PSD), open procedures imply prolonged wound care, significant morbidity, and high recurrence rates. Endoscopic treatment (PEPSIT) overcomes these limitations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how SARS-CoV-2 positivity affects outcomes for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), using data from the ISACS-STEMI COVID-19 registry.
  • - Results showed that SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were older, more likely to experience cardiogenic shock, and had worse post-procedural outcomes, including lower blood flow and increased need for thrombectomy.
  • - Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 positivity was linked to higher in-hospital mortality (25.7% vs 7%) and significantly increased 30-day mortality rates (34.4% vs 8.5%), indicating that the virus

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is projected to become the third cause of mortality worldwide. COPD shares several pathophysiological mechanisms with cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerosis. However, no definite answers are available on the prognostic role of COPD in the setting of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), especially during COVID-19 pandemic, among patients undergoing primary angioplasty, that is therefore the aim of the current study.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic heavily impacted healthcare workers, increasing their physical and psychological workload. Specifically, COVID-19 patients' airway management is definitely a challenging task regarding both severe and acute respiratory failure and the risk of contagion while performing aerosol-generating procedures. The category of anesthesiologists and intensivists, the main actors of airway management, showed a poor psychological well-being and a high stress and burnout risk.

T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) and lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) arise from the transformation of precursor T-cells sharing common morphological and immunophenotypic features. Despite this, T-LBL and T-ALL show different genomic/transcriptomic profiles and whether they represent two distinct disease entities or variant manifestations of the same disease is still a matter of debate. In this work, we performed a Reverse Phase Protein Array study on T-LBL and T-ALL samples and demonstrated that they are characterized by a different phosphoproteomic profile.

Emergency settings in obese people require tailored multidisciplinary protocols and pathways to manage these complex patients. For this reason, we would like to foresee a proficient cooperation with the UK Society for Obesity and Bariatric Anaesthesia (SOBA) and other societies: obesity is a worldwide problem, and an international and multidisciplinary cooperation is desirable, if not needed. As demonstrated for bariatric surgery, a standardizing anesthesiologic and critical approach and an experienced multidisciplinary staff, trained and equipped to manage obese patients, are related to better outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a deadly cancer where the presence of CD8 T cells correlates with better patient outcomes, but how necroptosis (a specific type of cell death) influences immune responses in HCC is still unclear.
  • The study analyzed RNA-seq data from 371 HCC patients to investigate the relationship between necroptosis-related genes and tumor-infiltrating T cells, confirming findings with immunohistochemistry in two additional patient groups.
  • Results indicated that higher expression of necroptosis-related genes (RIPK1, RIPK3, MLKL-p) in tumors was linked to increased CD3 and CD8 T cells, suggesting that necroptosis
