Idealized probability distributions, such as normal or other curves, lie at the root of confirmatory statistical tests. But how well do people understand these idealized curves? In practical terms, does the human visual system allow us to match sample data distributions with hypothesized population distributions from which those samples might have been drawn? And how do different visualization techniques impact this capability? This article shares the results of a crowdsourced experiment that tested the ability of respondents to fit normal curves to four different data distribution visualizations: bar histograms, dotplot histograms, strip plots, and boxplots. We find that the crowd can estimate the center (mean) of a distribution with some success and little bias.

Data describing outcomes of solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are variable, and the association between SOT status and mortality remains unclear. In this study, we compare clinical outcomes of SOT recipients hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 10, and September 1, 2020, to a matched cohort of non-SOT recipients at a national healthcare system in the United States (US). From a population of 43 461 hospitalized COVID-19-positive patients, we created a coarsened exact matched cohort of 4035 patients including 128 SOT recipients and 3907 weighted matched non-SOT controls.

This visual inspection is particularly important in exploratory data analysis, where analysts can use visualizations such as histograms and dot plots to identify data quality issues. Comprehensive genetic profiling is increasingly important for the clinical workup of hematologic tumors, as specific alterations are now linked to diagnostic characterization, prognostic stratification and therapy selection. To characterize relevant genetic and genomic alterations in myeloid malignancies maximally, we utilized a comprehensive strategy spanning fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), classical karyotyping, Chromosomal Microarray (CMA) for detection of copy number variants (CNVs) and Next generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. In our cohort of 569 patients spanning the myeloid spectrum, NGS and CMA testing frequently identified mutations and copy number changes in the majority of genes with important clinical associations, such as TP53, TET2, RUNX1, SRSF2, APC and ATM.
