We discuss the possibility of performing precise tests of universality in decays. We show that in wide regions of the dilepton invariant mass spectrum the ratio between muonic and electronic decay widths can be predicted with high accuracy, both within and beyond the Standard Model. We present numerical expressions which can be used to extract precise information on short-distance dynamics if a deviation from universality is observed in the data.

To this end, we estimate the distortion of the spectrum induced by the re-scattering process, and propose a method to simultaneously constrain this (non-standard) contribution and the long-distance effects associated to hadronic intermediate states. The latter are constrained using the analytic properties of the amplitude combined with data and perturbative calculations.

Approximately 14,000 births among women with transplanted organs have been reported worldwide, but pregnancy complications have been frequent: spontaneous or therapeutic abortion, preterm birth, low birth weight, and intrauterine growth restriction. Herein we have described a case of an acute rejection episode in a renal transplant recipient, occurring 6 months after successful delivery, despite the fulfillment of all European best practice guidelines criteria and the maintenance of adequate immunosuppression.

Viral replication can be reactivated by immunosuppressive therapies or immunologic diseases, leading to the development of typical hepatitis B.
Methods: All patients on the waiting list for renal transplantation at the only 2 transplant centers in our region (Piemonte, Italy) were checked for the presence of occult HBV infection by an highly sensitive quantitative HBV-DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay (nested PCR); the only exclusion criterion was HBsAg-positivity.
Background: Carriage of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) D-allele favors weight gain in mid-life and, possibly, cardiovascular complications; we aimed to verify the relationship between these conditions and ACE polymorphisms in the renal transplant (RTx) setting.
Methods: ACE genotypes were evaluated in 169 RTx recipients (107 males, 62 females) and related to body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) changes 1 year after transplant, as well as to cardiovascular events and allograft loss. Allelic frequencies and body weights were compared with those of a control group (age- and sex-matched healthy blood donors).
Kidney transplantation not only drastically improves the life-expectancy of hemodialyzed patients, but it also affords psychological and social advantages with improvements in short- and long-term personal and working lives. Quality of life (QoL) is one of the parameters of psychological well-being. There is an improvement of QoL from pre- to posttransplant, but it is not to the level of healthy samples.

In the present guideline, evidence of antiviral prophylaxis and pre-emptive treatment for preventing cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in kidney transplant recipients is presented.
Methods: SR of RCT and RCT on antiviral prophylaxis and pre-emptive treatment for CMV infection in kidney transplant recipients were identified referring to a Cochrane Library and Renal Health Library search (2005 update).
Background: In transplanted patients undergoing immunossuppressive therapy the incidence of malignant neoplasia is 3-4 times higher than in the general population. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of different tumours and the links between modulation of immunosuppressive therapy and patient and graft survival.
Patients: We evaluated 2029 kidney-transplanted patients from four Transplant Centres (Bari, Bologna, Modena, Novara) belonging to the Associazione InterRegionale Trapianti (AIRT).
Mismanagement in the placement of central venous catheter (CVC) may occur in up to 20% of cases. The catheter can be inadvertently placed in the contralateral brachiocephalic vein, the ipsi or contralateral internal jugular vein, and usually a thoracic radiograph is necessary to evaluate its location. We propose a technique first described by Serafini et al.
