Although colon cancer is preventable, it is still the second leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the United States (). Colonoscopy is as yet the gold standard for colon cancer prevention (). The success of colonoscopy is dependent upon the quality of the bowel prep.

Diabetes Self-Management: Facilitating Lifestyle Change.

Healthy eating and increased physical activity can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes mellitus and facilitate diabetes management. Current guidelines recommend long-term weight loss of 5% to 7% of body weight and 150 minutes of at least moderate-intensity physical activity per week for most patients with prediabetes and diabetes. Techniques to assess and facilitate adherence to these lifestyle changes can be practical in primary care.

Development and field tests of a narrowband all-reflective spatial heterodyne spectrometer.

We describe the design, development, and performance of a narrowband, all-reflective, unaliased spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) that has been tested in observations at the focus of the 1.6 m main telescope of the McMath-Pierce solar telescope on Kitt Peak. The all-reflective SHS described herein is a highly robust common-path Fourier transform spectrometer without moving parts that, over a limited spectral region, combines the large field of view and high resolving power characteristic of interference spectrometers but at substantially reduced instrument size and optical tolerances.

First results from an all-reflection spatial heterodyne spectrometer with broad spectral coverage.

Operation of an all-reflection, broadband, spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS) is reported. This Mark 2 SHS is constructed using a custom diffraction grating and other standard optical components. The custom grating is coarse (18 grooves/mm), with a symmetric blaze that allows its simultaneous use as dispersing element and beam splitter and combiner.

Why the world needs protists!

In this brief review, literature references are given to researches--involving diverse species of protists--that support the author's firm conviction that the biological world of today absolutely requires the presence of numerous of these generally small and unicelled organisms if it is to survive. Examples supplied come from areas within the field of protistology sensu lato as widely separated as basic phycological research on photosynthesis and protozoological/medical/biomedical investigations on malaria and other pathogens of human beings. Emphasis is primarily on the most relevant works of the past 10-15 years, although historically highly significant papers of older vintage require at least indirect--and occasionally direct--citation.

Symptom experiences of lung transplant recipients: comparisons across gender, pretransplantation diagnosis, and type of transplantation.

Purposes: To investigate symptom experiences of patients who have single and bilateral-sequential lung transplantation and to determine whether differences exist according to gender, pretransplantation diagnosis, and type of transplantation procedure.

Design And Methods: In the context of a descriptive, comparative survey design, surviving recipients of single and bilateral-sequential lung transplants (n = 56) were mailed a symptom frequency and distress questionnaire. The response rate was 85.

Interventions to improve patient appointments in an ambulatory care facility.

Failed patient appointments in ambulatory care may result in decreased revenues. The purpose of this study was to determine if patient reminders would affect the "no-show" rate of a medical ambulatory care setting. Patients of 10 physicians participated in a 6-week study.
