Gender and leprosy: case studies in Indonesia, Nigeria, Nepal and Brazil.

There appear to be regional differences in gender ratios of leprosy patients being diagnosed and treated. In Asian countries, more men than women are registered whilst in Africa female patients outnumber males. The Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR) therefore initiated research into factors underlying these regional gender differences.

Gender differences in health care-seeking behavior for sexually transmitted diseases: a population-based study in Nairobi, Kenya.

Background: Health care-seeking behavior for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is important in STD/HIV control.

Goal: The goal of this study was to describe the proportion seeking care, patient delay, and choice of provider among men and women with STD-related complaints in Nairobi, Kenya.

Study Design: A population-based questionnaire was administered in 7 randomly selected clusters (small geographic areas covering approximately 150 households each).

Clients of female sex workers in Nyanza province, Kenya: a core group in STD/HIV transmission.

Background: Commercial sex plays an important role in the spread of HIV and AIDS in Africa, especially in beginning epidemics.

Goal: The goal was to study the sociodemographic characteristics and sexual risk behavior of clients of female sex workers (FSWs) in Nyanza province, Kenya.

Study Design: In the town of Kisumu and the rural districts Siaya and Bondo, male clients of FSWs were identified in bars, nightclubs, and lodges.
