A case of chronic intoxication by 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) is reported in a 21-year-old bodybuilder, also known as an abuser of anabolic steroids, who died after ingesting 2 grams of this substance after 6 months of repeated consumption. The bodybuilder presented the triad of symptoms - tachycardia, tachypnoea, profuse sweating - from 6 months before his death, and was hospitalised for multiple organ failure 4 months before his death. Medical staff attributed this serious episode to his consumption of 2,4-DNP.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the features and genetic factors of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in children, analyzing data from 63 cases over 20 years.
  • Infants often show milder and asymptomatic forms of PHPT, while older children exhibit more nonspecific symptoms, and about 52% of cases have a genetic basis.
  • Genetic mutations related to calcium-sensing are prevalent in infants, whereas mutations affecting parathyroid cell growth are more common in older children, highlighting different underlying mechanisms in various age groups.

Objectives: To build a detection algorithm of non-accidental pediatric burns (NAB) using hospital resumes from the French Hospital Discharge Database (HDD) and to describe cases with no judicial or administrative report.

Materials And Methods: Children aged 0-16 years old hospitalized at the University Hospital of Tours from 2012 to 2017 with a coded burn were included. "Probable" or "possible" HDD cases of NAB were defined based on the International Classification of Diseases 10th version codes during the inclusion stay or the previous year.

Article Synopsis
  • ICU hospitalizations for elderly patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI) have risen, but the long-term impacts of these admissions are not well understood.
  • A study analyzed data on ICU survivors aged 80 and older, matching them with controls to assess differences in mortality, healthcare use, and frailty scores over two years post-discharge.
  • Findings revealed ICU survivors faced significantly higher mortality risk (10.1 times greater at 6 months and 3.6 times greater at 2 years), increased healthcare utilization, and a rise in frailty scores compared to controls, suggesting the need for improved post-ICU care strategies.

Background: The consequences of the ageing population concerning ICU hospitalisation need to be adequately described. We believe that this discussion should be disease specific. A focus on respiratory infections is of particular interest, because it is strongly associated with old age.

Medicolegal physicians are increasingly called upon to aid in determining the administrative age group affiliation of refugees with questionable unaccompanied minor claims. According to guidelines for forensic age assessment, age differentiation along the 18-year-old cut-off relies on clavicular ossification. The thin-slice computed tomography scan (TSCTs) of the medial clavicular epiphysis (MCE) is one of the methods contributing to this assessment, though it is not yet universally accepted.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients require a specific continuum of care (CoC) from HCV screening to treatment. We assessed CoC of HCV-infected patients in a longitudinal study.

Methods: We established a cohort of subjects undergoing HCV screening (high alanine aminotransferase levels or risk factors) during preventive consultations at a French regional medical center from 1993 to 2013.
