During the course of isolating novel actinobacteria producing bioactive metabolites, strain BG9H was obtained from an arid soil sample in Erzurum, Turkey. Pairwise sequence comparisons for 16S rRNA gene sequences showed the strain was a member of the genus Streptomyces and it shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence identity of 99.7% with Streptomyces huasconensis HST28.

N-butylbenzenesulfonamide (NBBS) is a high-production volume plasticizer that is an emerging contaminant of concern for environmental and human health. To understand the risks and health effects of exposure to NBBS, studies were conducted in adult-exposed mice and developmentally exposed rats to evaluate the potential for NBBS to modulate the immune system. Beginning between 8 and 9 weeks of age, dosed feed containing NBBS at concentrations of 0, 313, 625, 1250, 2500, and 5000 ppm was continuously provided to B6C3F1/N female mice for 28 days.

Sodium metavanadate (NaVO ) is a pentavalent vanadium compound used in the metal industry and dietary supplements; human exposure occurs through inhalation of fumes and dust and ingestion of NaVO -containing products. The objective of this study was to assess the potential immunotoxicity of NaVO . Female B6C3F1/N mice were exposed to 0-500 ppm NaVO in drinking water for 28 days and evaluated for effects on immune cell populations and innate, cellular-mediated, and humoral-mediated immunity.

Introduction: Malignant primary lymphoma represents only 1%-5% of all gastric tumours. Spontaneous gastric perforation in the absence of chemotherapy in these cases is extremely rare. Black cohosh is a readily available dietary supplement currently marketed as a remedy for dysmenorrhea and menopausal symptoms and is one of the top-selling herbal supplements in the United States. Black cohosh extract (BCE) was nominated to the National Toxicology Program (NTP) by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences due to its widespread use and lack of animal toxicity studies. Results of the NTP BCE subchronic mouse toxicity study revealed a dose-dependent, non-regenerative decrease in the erythron with an increase in the mean corpuscular volume (macrocytosis).

Many environmental chemicals are known to disrupt thyroid function. Measurement of thyroid hormones in animal studies provides useful information to understand the effects of environmental chemicals on thyroid hormone metabolism. We report an efficient method, utilizing a protein precipitation followed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis, to quantitate total 3,3',5-triiodo-L-thyronine (triiodothyronine, T3) and total 3,3',5,5'-tetraiodo-L-thyronine (thyroxine, T4) in rodent serum.

Sulfolane is a solvent used in the petrochemical industry and a groundwater contaminant in areas near refineries. The current studies were conducted to assess the impact of oral exposure to sulfolane on the immune system using two models: (1) a perinatal drinking water exposure to 0, 30, 100, 300, or 1000 mg/L from gestation day (GD) 6 until ∼13 weeks-of-age in Harlan Sprague Dawley rats; and, (2) a 90-day gavage exposure of adult female B6C3F1/N mice to 0, 1, 10, 30, 100, or 300 mg/kg/day. Immune parameters evaluated included measurement of antibody production against sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), measurements of natural killer (NK) cell activity, cytotoxic T-cell (CTL) activity, and T-cell proliferation, as well as measures of splenic immune cell populations, hematological parameters, and histopathology of immune tissues.

Preeclampsia-eclampsia syndrome (PES) is associated with severe obstetric complications and there are no efficient methods available for an early detection. We studied blood concentration of some immunological and metabolic markers in association with obstetric outcome in healthy pregnant women and patients with obstetric risk factors, by ELISA and biochemical tests. Patients with complications showed higher levels of CRP and C4 positively correlated with Triglycerides and Cholesterol concentrations.

Reticulum cell hyperplasia (RCH) was a term used for many years by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) to describe a certain non-neoplastic bone marrow lesion of rats. Retrospective microscopic evaluation of RCH lesions and immunohistochemistry analyses were performed to reassess and further characterize these lesions. The NTP database was searched to identify femoral bone marrow specimens diagnosed with RCH from 1981 to 2014 (n = 254).
