Equatorial fishes, and the critically important fisheries based on them, are thought to be at-risk from climate warming because the fishes have evolved in a relatively aseasonal environment and possess narrow thermal tolerance windows that are close to upper thermal limits. We assessed survival, growth, aerobic performance and critical thermal maxima (CTmax) following acute and 21 d exposures to temperatures up to 4°C higher than current maxima for six species of freshwater fishes indigenous to tropical countries and of importance for human consumption. All six species showed 1.

We explored the consequences of the return to FW by collecting maturing sockeye salmon from the marine waters off the mouth of the Fraser River and holding approximately 50 sockeye in each of five treatments: saltwater (SW; salinity = 28 ppt), iso-osmotic water (ISO; 13 ppt), FW (0 ppt), SW + gonadotropin-releasing hormone (SW + GnRH), and FW + GnRH. Exogenous GnRH treatments were intended to accelerate maturation.

More than 500 salmon were nonlethally biopsied for blood plasma, gill filament tips, and gross somatic energy (GSE) and were released with either acoustic or radio transmitters. At the time of capture, GSE, body length, and circulating testosterone ([T]) differed between populations, differences that reflected known life-history variations.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTypical and atypical antipsychotic drugs have been reported to affect basal dopaminergic activity differentially in nigrostriatal and limbic structures after acute and chronic administration in animals. In addition, glutamate has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to examine basal and locally stimulated glutamate and dopamine efflux in the caudate, nucleus accumbens, and medial prefrontal cortex using in vivo microdialysis after chronic clozapine and haloperidol treatment.

Mouse pups were exposed to ethanol, 3 g/kg by daily subcutaneous injection on postnatal days 2-14. At age 50 days, the ethanol-exposed mice had significant reductions from control levels in eight-arm maze performance.

It may indicate disease in the gallbladder, adrenal glands, kidneys, pancreas, lungs or chest wall. Disease processes associated with calcification in these organs include echinococcal cysts, calcified renal cysts, chest wall masses and degenerative cystic lesions of the pancreas and adrenal glands.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFForty patients over 70 years of age with acute pancreatitis were studied. The most common cause of pancreatitis was biliary tract disease (14 patients, 35 percent). Twelve patients (30 percent) were discharged with a diagnosis of idiopathic pancreatitis, but tests such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography that might have established the cause of disease were frequently not employed.

There were no episodes of sepsis; however, acute pancreatitis developed in one patient for an overall complication rate of 4 percent. Results of ERCP were positive in 24 of the 25 patients (96 percent), with filling of the pseudocyst in 17 and pancreatic ductal obstruction in 7.

Arteriovenous malformations of the stomach are rare; blood loss may be manifested either by chronic anemia or by massive recurrent hemorrhage. We report a patient with massive upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage from a gastric arteriovenous malformation. Emergency operation to control hemorrhage precluded the performance of angiography; diagnosis was made from the appearance of the lesion and dilatation of the veins draining the involved area.

Of 21 patients with divisum documented by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, 6 (28 percent) were found to have no reason other than divisum to account for multiple attacks of pancreatitis. Cholelithiasis was present in one patient, who remains free of recurrent pancreatitis after cholecystectomy only.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute pancreatitis is classified as idiopathic when an underlying cause cannot be identified through a careful history and appropriate noninvasive tests. Unless a cause can be identified, recurrent attacks cannot be effectively prevented. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed in 35 patients considered to have idiopathic recurrent acute pancreatitis, and an anatomic abnormality of either the pancreatic or biliary ductal system was demonstrated in 16.

However, the complication rate was statistically significantly higher in those undergoing total thyroidectomy. Partial thyroidectomy with lobectomy on the side of the tumor, resection of the thyroid isthmus, and simple excision of enlarged cervical lymph nodes, if present, appears to be equally effective and safer.
