Colorectal cancer screening brochure for Latinos: focus group evaluation.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) can be effectively prevented via screening colonoscopy, yet adherence rates remain low among Latinos. Interventions targeting individual and cultural barriers to screening are needed. We developed an educational brochure to target these barriers faced by a diverse Latino population.

Implementation of culturally targeted patient navigation system for screening colonoscopy in a direct referral system.

Low-income minorities often face system-based and personal barriers to screening colonoscopy (SC). Culturally targeted patient navigation (CTPN) programs employing professional navigators (Pro-PNs) or community-based peer navigators (Peer-PNs) can help overcome barriers but are not widely implemented. In East Harlem, NY, USA, where approximately half the residents participate in SC, 315 African American patients referred for SC at a primary care clinic with a Direct Endoscopic Referral System were recruited between May 2008 and May 2010.

Cost analysis of a patient navigation system to increase screening colonoscopy adherence among urban minorities.

Background: Patient navigation (PN) is being used increasingly to help patients complete screening colonoscopy (SC) to prevent colorectal cancer. At their large, urban academic medical center with an open-access endoscopy system, the authors previously demonstrated that PN programs produced a colonoscopy completion rate of 78.5% in a cohort of 503 patients (predominantly African Americans and Latinos with public health insurance).

The impact of endoscopic ultrasonography on the management of suspected pancreatic cancer--a comprehensive longitudinal continuous evaluation.

Objectives: Between 1997 and 2001, a single-center chart review demonstrated significant impact of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) in evaluating suspected pancreatic cancer (PCA). Repeating and comparing this review with that from 2001 to 2004 was performed to determine whether increased use of EUS results in more patients being accurately chosen for curative versus palliative procedures, and for surgical versus nonsurgical oncotherapy.

Methods: The complete systematic review was made up of electronic files from the gastroenterology, oncology, and pathology departments of patients presenting with suspected PCA.

The mTOR inhibitor CCI-779 induces apoptosis and inhibits growth in preclinical models of primary adult human ALL.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adult patients is often resistant to current therapy, making the development of novel therapeutic agents paramount. We investigated whether mTOR inhibitors (MTIs), a class of signal transduction inhibitors, would be effective in primary human ALL. Lymphoblasts from adult patients with precursor B ALL were cultured on bone marrow stroma and were treated with CCI-779, a second generation MTI.

Cell division rates of primary human precursor B cells in culture reflect in vivo rates.

Bone marrow stroma-based cultures provide a powerful model for studying cell division and apoptosis of primary human precursor B cells. Studies using this model are elucidating the mechanisms by which stromal cells inhibit apoptosis of cultured normal precursor B cells and have demonstrated that the apoptotic rate of cultured leukemic precursor B cells can predict clinical outcome in acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In contrast to apoptosis, cell division in this model has not been well characterized.

Identification of cyclin D3 as a direct target of E2A using DamID.

The transcription factor E2A can promote precursor B cell expansion, promote G(1) cell cycle progression, and induce the expressions of multiple G(1)-phase cyclins. To better understand the mechanism by which E2A induces these cyclins, we characterized the relationship between E2A and the cyclin D3 gene promoter. E2A transactivated the 1-kb promoter of cyclin D3, which contains two E boxes.

The role of histidine in the anemia of folate deficiency.

The amino acid histidine is metabolized to glutamic acid in mammalian tissue. Formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) is an intermediary in this reaction, and tetrahydrofolic acid is the coenzyme that converts it to glutamic acid. A test for folate deficiency concerns the measurement of urinary FIGLU excretion after a histidine load.

Intergenerational transfer of psychosocial risk in women with childhood histories of aggression, withdrawal, or aggression and withdrawal.

Intergenerational transfer of risk between mothers and children, based on mothers' childhood aggression and social withdrawal, was examined in an inner-city sample. Each of the 3 studies reported involved a subset of the 909 female participants in the Concordia Longitudinal Risk Project, initiated when the participants were of school age. Using medical records, Study 1 (n = 853) focused on prediction of teen motherhood, delivery complications during childbirth, multiparity, and close spacing of births.

Adrenal pseudocyst: report of two cases.

Adrenal cysts are uncommon lesions. The authors discuss two cases of adrenal pseudocyst, and its classification and possible pathogenesis and complications. The role of radiologic findings in preoperative evaluation of renal/suprarenal masses also is detailed.

Reliability and validity of judgments of the integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee using the Lachman's test.

This study assessed the intratester and intertester reliability and the validity of judgments of the integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) based on the use of the Lachman's test. End-feel and tibial translation judgments made during the Lachman's test were also assessed. Patients with unilateral knee problems (N = 32), 13 of whom had documented ACL damage, were examined by two physical therapists and two orthopedic surgeons.

Comparison of total costs of administering calcium polycarbophil and psyllium mucilloid in an institutional setting.

The total cost of administering calcium polycarbophil per unit dose (two tablets) was compared with that of administering psyllium mucilloid (one packet dissolved in 8 oz of water) in 20 elderly nursing-home residents. Times for printing labels, checking and initialing labels, gathering materials needed, and preparing and administering the medications were recorded during at least 50 observations in each treatment group. Total cost included nurses' and pharmacists' time, materials, and medications.

Riboflavin metabolism in the hypothyroid newborn.

In the hypothyroid rat the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) content of the liver is similar to that observed in rats maintained on a riboflavin-deficient diet. Thyroxine regulates the enzyme flavin kinase. Human adults with hypothyroidism have levels of erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EGR), an FAD-containing enzyme, in the range indicative of riboflavin deficiency, which can be corrected with thyroxine therapy.

Riboflavin metabolism in the hypothyroid human adult.

It had been shown that thyroxine regulates the conversion of riboflavin to riboflavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) in laboratory animals. In the hypothyroid rat, the flavin adenine dinucleotide level of the liver decreases to levels observed in riboflavin deficiency. We have shown that in six hypothyroid human adults, the activity of erythrocyte glutathione reductase, an accessible FAD-containing enzyme, is decreased to levels observed during riboflavin deficiency.

Nutritional deficiencies in institutionalized mentally retarded and physically disabled individuals.

The folic acid, riboflavin, and vitamin A status of 150 individuals in a hospital for mentally retarded persons was examined. Because many of the subjects were incontinent, it was necessary to use blood samples. Folic acid deficiency was determined from plasma levels and from examination of stained peripheral blood smears for megaloblastic changes in the leucocytes.

Effect of diet on vitamin deficiencies in retarded individuals receiving drugs.

A population of mentally retarded and physically disabled individuals on long-term therapy with anticonvulsant drugs had a high prevalence of folic acid and riboflavin deficiency, 20% and 17%, respectively, as they entered an institution devoted to their care. Their previous diet was probably nutritionally marginal, as it was cooked and prepared to baby food consistency, and milk was rarely given. They were fed in the recumbent position, resulting in frequent vomiting.

Case studies: isolated strain of the tensor fasciae latae.

Three cases of isolated strains of the tensor fasciae latae muscle are reviewed. Objective and subjective findings, including the differentiation between iliotibial band and tensor fasciae latae are discussed. Conservative measures of treatment and the technique of stretching the tensor fasciae latae are described.
