Eye loss occurs convergently in numerous animal phyla as an adaptation to dark environments. We investigate the cave planarian Girardia multidiverticulata (Gm), a representative species of the Spiralian clade, to study mechanisms of eye loss. We found that Gm, which was previously described as an eyeless species, retains rudimentary and functional eyes.

Biopsies of CLM were performed before and after microwave ablation (MWA), as part of a prospective clinical trial between October 2013 and May 2019. Pre-ablation biopsy slides were examined for the Ki-67 LI using light microscopy.

The rapid development and use of these technologies have curtailed opportunities to fully consider their potential impacts (eg, for human rights, civil liberties, privacy, and marginalization of vulnerable groups).
Objective: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed and gray literature to identify the types and applications of digital technologies used for surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and the predicted and witnessed consequences of digital surveillance.

Purpose: To evaluate factors affecting the diagnostic yield (percent of biopsy samples leading to a pathologic diagnosis) of lesional bone biopsies in patients with hematologic malignancies.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 206 lesional bone biopsies in 182 patients with a hematologic malignancy between January 2017 and December 2022. The parameters that were reviewed to evaluate diagnostic yield included biopsy device type (manual vs.
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a surge in digital public health surveillance worldwide, with limited opportunities to consider the effectiveness or impact of digital surveillance. The news media shape public understanding of topics of importance, contributing to our perception of priority issues. This study investigated news media reports published during the first year of the pandemic to understand how the use and consequences of digital surveillance technologies were reported on.

However, concerns remain around the rapid development and deployment of digital technologies, how these technologies have been used, and their efficacy in supporting public health goals. Following the five-stage scoping review framework, we conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature to identify the types and nature of digital technologies used for surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and the success of these measures.

However, many patients are found to not require surgical management, resulting in delays for patients who do. A decision-support tool was developed to address this issue and to guide treatment options by determining the need for surgical or nonsurgical approaches.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third-most common cancer, with the liver being the most frequent visceral metastatic site. KRAS, NRAS, BRAF V600E Mutations, DNA Mismatch Repair Deficiency/Microsatellite Instability Status, HER2 Amplification, and NTRK Fusions are NCCN approved and actionable molecular biomarkers for colorectal cancer.

Given the reduction in non-severe acute respiratory syndrome - coronavirus 2 viral infections observed in multiple studies during the coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we sought to determine if the reduction in viral infections led to a change in the incidence of SBI in this vulnerable patient population.
Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective study of infants 56 days or younger presenting with fever to emergency departments of 6 community hospitals.
Introduction: Infectious diseases pose a risk to public health, requiring efficient strategies for disease prevention. Digital health surveillance technologies provide new opportunities to enhance disease prevention, detection, tracking, reporting and analysis. However, in addition to concerns regarding the effectiveness of these technologies in meeting public health goals, there are also concerns regarding the ethics, legality, safety and sustainability of digital surveillance technologies.

AIM In a primary care practice catering for Pasifika people, to determine the time after first recognition of macroalbuminuria to the occurrence of major cardiovascular and renal events, and to examine the relationship with retinopathy status. METHODS In a retrospective observational cohort study, we documented the occurrence of major cardiovascular events and amputations, end-stage kidney disease and death in 115 people with type 2 diabetes reviewed by a specialist diabetes physician at the Langimalie Tongan Health practice between 2005 and 2018.

In this study, we generated inactivated virus-laden aerosols of 0.3-2 microns in diameter (0.

In this paper, we use longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics for the United States to analyze the role of non-resident family in the migration of separated people immediately after and in the years following union dissolution. We explore both migration in general and return migration among separated people, drawing comparisons to married and never-married people.

Objective: To determine the risk of acquiring perioperative COVID-19 infection in previously COVID-19 negative patients.
Summary Of Background Data: During the initial peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was significant concern of hospital acquired COVID-19 infections. Medical centers rapidly implemented systems to minimize perioperative transmission, including routine preoperative testing, patient isolation, and enhanced cleaning.

Optical biometry uses interferometry to measure the axial length (AL) of the eye. Traditionally, one-variable regression formulas have converted the optical path length measured by a biometer to a geometric AL. An alternate calculation of axial length sums the individual segments of the eye (sum-of-segments AL).

When housed in an animal facility, 13-lined ground squirrels exhibit variation in seasonal onset of hibernation, which is not explained by environmental or biological factors. We hypothesized that genetic factors instead drive variation in timing.

There is a need for acute protective interventions, and the aim of this study was to explore in an experimental TBI model the neuroprotective potential of a single bolus of a neuroactive omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), administered in a time window feasible for emergency services. Adult mice received a controlled cortical impact injury (CCI) and neurological impairment was assessed with the modified Neurological Severity Score (mNSS) up to 28 days post-injury.

Purpose: To present the Cooke-modified axial length (CMAL) method, which closely approximates sum-of-segments AL. Notably, sum-of-segments AL has been shown to improve predictions of many intraocular lens (IOL) power formulas; however, calculating this AL requires information that is not readily available.
Design: Comparative case series.
Purpose: To compare prediction accuracy with the axial length (AL) calculation method of the Lenstar biometer (traditional AL) and that of the ARGOS biometer (sum-of-segments AL).
Setting: Private practice clinic.
Design: Comparative case series.
Objective: To determine the sex-specific relation of frontal plane alignment (FPA) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-defined features of patellofemoral osteoarthritis, and also to tibiofemoral osteoarthritis and knee pain.
Method: The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study is cohort study comprised of individuals with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis. We determined the sex-specific dose-response relation of baseline FPA to MRI-defined patellofemoral and tibiofemoral structural worsening, and incident knee pain, over 7 years.
Objective: The internet has become a vital resource through which patients learn about medical conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the quality and readability of online information about nutrition and diabetes management.
Methods: An internet search was conducted using three search terms of varying sophistication (how to eat with diabetes, diabetes diet, and medical nutrition therapy for diabetes) and the three most popular search engines (Yahoo, Bing, and Google).

Findings of particular note include the following: (1) post-separation linked lives, proximities and spatial constraints are characterised by important gender asymmetries; (2) the formation of new post-separation family ties (i.e.
