Individuals with orofacial clefts (OFCs) may be at an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This systematic review provides a summary of the most recent data regarding the prevalence of ASD and ADHD in the OFC population and compares this to the general paediatric population. Multiple databases were searched including PubMed/Medline and Embase in July 2024, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024565219).

  • Many U.S. states improved Medicaid coverage for tobacco dependence treatment (TDT) in the last fifteen years, but its effects on smoking behaviors, particularly for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD), are unclear.
  • A study using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2009-2018) examined the smoking habits of Medicaid beneficiaries aged 18-64 with SUD, finding that the expansion of TDT coverage did not significantly impact smoking cessation or nicotine dependence.
  • The research concluded that comprehensive TDT coverage did not lead to changes in smoking behaviors among Medicaid beneficiaries with SUD, suggesting that additional interventions may be required to effectively address smoking among this population.

  • The study aimed to assess the acceptability and feasibility of the Screening and Support for Youth (SASY), a community-based program that provides mental health screening and support for diverse youth.
  • Using various tools, the SASY screening evaluated symptoms, functioning, and clinical risks, leading to personalized insights for participants during motivational interviews and options for online interventions.
  • Innovative recruitment methods, enhanced by the pandemic (like using QR codes), successfully increased participation, particularly among Black or African American and Hispanic youth, showing that combining online and offline strategies can effectively engage a diverse population.

Introduction: Patients with severe asthma may be prescribed biologic therapies to improve disease control. The EVEREST study aimed to characterize the global disease burden of patients with severe asthma without access to biologics and those who have access but do not receive biologics, as well as the remaining unmet need despite use of these therapies.

Methods: This was a historical cohort study of patients with severe asthma (aged ≥18 years) in the International Severe Asthma Registry receiving Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) 2018 step 5 treatment, or with uncontrolled disease at GINA step 4.

This article describes (a) key elements of a high-quality technical assistance (TA) system; (b) the operationalization of a high-quality TA system (Getting To Outcomes-Technical Assistance; GTO-TA) being implemented in a training and TA center (TTAC) interested in transforming its support services to include an evidence-informed approach to TA; and (c) key lessons learned in successfully transitioning from "TA-as-usual" to an evidence-informed TA system. GTO-TA is one operationalization of a systematic, proactive, evidence-informed approach to TA. GTO-TA includes best practices and core elements for a comprehensive TA system; it aims to increase the readiness (reduce barriers and increase facilitators) of an organization to deliver an innovation (program, policy, practice, and process new to an organization) with quality.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Beta-2 transferrin (B2Tf) gel electrophoresis in diagnosing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea among patients with unilateral thin clear rhinorrhea (UTCR), a condition that can indicate various medical issues. !* -
  • Conducted from 2016 to 2024, the study involved 105 patients and showed B2Tf GE had a sensitivity of 89.5% and specificity of 78.3%, with certain causes for false results identified, such as sinusitis and contamination during sample collection. !* -
  • While the findings align with previous literature on test accuracy, the study highlights the need for further research

Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize and compare national estimates of mental healthcare use among White and Asian American groups to provide an update using post Affordable Care Act data.

Methods: We analyzed yearly cross-sectional data from the 2013-2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, including White (n = 112,590) and Asian American (n = 10,210) individuals, and examined rates of mental healthcare use for Asian (overall), Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, and Other Asian individuals relative to White individuals. Using multivariable logistic regression models and predictive margin methods, we estimated overall Asian disparities and Asian subgroup disparities compared to White group rates in mental health care (outpatient, specialty, psychotropic medication) among adults with and without elevated risk for mental illness.

In an era of growing environmental, socioeconomic, and market uncertainties, understanding the adaptive strategies of smallholder farmers is paramount for sustainable agricultural productivity and environmental management efforts. We adopted a mixed-methods approach to investigate the adaptive strategies of smallholders in Northwest Cambodia. Our methodology included downscaled climate projections to project future climate conditions and scenarios, household surveys to collect detailed demographic and socioeconomic data, crop monitoring and record-keeping to gather data on productivity and profitability, and semi-structured interviews to obtain qualitative insights on constraints and adaptation.

Aging is associated with systemic chronic, low-grade inflammation, termed 'inflammaging'. This pattern of inflammation is multifactorial and is driven by numerous inflammatory pathways, including the inflammasome. However, most studies to date have examined changes in the transcriptomes that are associated with aging and inflammaging, despite the fact that inflammasome activation is driven by a series of post-translational activation steps, culminating in the cleavage and activation of caspase-1.

Providing consumers with product-specific environmental impact information for food products (ecolabels) may promote more sustainable purchasing, needed to meet global environmental targets. This UK study (N = 1051 participants) investigated the effectiveness of different ecolabels using an experimental online supermarket platform, comparing three labels against control (no label). Significant reductions were found in the environmental impact score (EIS) for all labels compared to control (labels presented: values for four environmental indicators [-3.

Article Synopsis
  • Early warning systems for crop failures need to predict yields 6 to 12 months in advance, but such forecasts are currently limited.
  • Recent advancements in climate forecasting have shown that it is possible to create skillful preseason crop yield forecasts for major crops like maize and wheat.
  • These skillful forecasts can cover significant areas globally, especially in regions like Southeast Africa and Southeast Asia for maize, and parts of Asia, Australia, and South America for wheat, with some forecasts accurate over 18 months prior to harvest.
