Persistent near-tropical warmth on the Antarctic continent during the early Eocene epoch.

The warmest global climates of the past 65 million years occurred during the early Eocene epoch (about 55 to 48 million years ago), when the Equator-to-pole temperature gradients were much smaller than today and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels were in excess of one thousand parts per million by volume. Recently the early Eocene has received considerable interest because it may provide insight into the response of Earth's climate and biosphere to the high atmospheric carbon dioxide levels that are expected in the near future as a consequence of unabated anthropogenic carbon emissions. Climatic conditions of the early Eocene 'greenhouse world', however, are poorly constrained in critical regions, particularly Antarctica.

Coagulopathy management in liver transplantation.

Risk of bleeding and transfusion in liver transplantation is determined by age, severity of liver disease, as well as hemoglobin and plasma fibrinogen values. During the hepatectomy and the anhepatic phase, the coagulopathy is related to a decrease in clotting factors caused by surgical bleeding, facilitated by the increased portal hypertension and esophageal-gastric venous distension. Corrections of hematologic disturbances by administration of large volumes of crystalloid, colloid, or blood products may worsen the coagulopathy.

Hormonal secretion and quality of life in Nelson syndrome and Cushing disease after long acting repeatable octreotide: a short series and update.

Clinical management of persistent adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) excess in Nelson syndrome (NS) and Cushing disease (CD) remains a challenge. Somatostatin and its analogs as octreotide decrease ACTH secretion through somatostatin receptors of pituitary cells. To our knowledge, there are no reports on the effect of long-acting repeatable octreotide (oct-lar) on hormonal secretion and quality of life in patients with NS and CD who failed conventional therapy.

Ca2+ dysregulation in neurons from transgenic mice expressing mutant presenilin 2.

Mutations in amyloid precursor protein (APP), and presenilin-1 and presenilin-2 (PS1 and PS2) have causally been implicated in Familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD), but the mechanistic link between the mutations and the early onset of neurodegeneration is still debated. Although no consensus has yet been reached, most data suggest that both FAD-linked PS mutants and endogenous PSs are involved in cellular Ca2+ homeostasis. We here investigated subcellular Ca2+ handling in primary neuronal cultures and acute brain slices from wild type and transgenic mice carrying the FAD-linked PS2-N141I mutation, either alone or in the presence of the APP Swedish mutation.

[A screening program for colorectal cancer in Chilean subjects aged fifty years or more].

Background: Mortality from colorectal cancer (CCR) in Chile has nearly doubled over the past 15 years. International studies have shown that CCR screening programs based on fecal occult blood test (FOBT) reduce CCR mortality.

[Tripeptidyl peptidase 1 in patients with late infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis].

Introduction: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses are a group of inherited autosomal recessive lysosomal diseases, most commonly found in infancy. These are neuropathologically characterised by accumulation of an autofluorescent lipopigment in neurons and other cells. This condition is clinically characterised by loss of motor and cognitive skills, lack of motor coordination, ataxia, progressive visual impairment, behavioural changes; seizures of difficult to manage seizures, particularly myoclonic, and premature death.

Alloantigen-specific response is preserved and autoimmunity is maintained in an HIV-positive patient with immunoglobulin A nephropathy undergoing renal transplantation: a warning about long-term reduction in immunosuppression--a case report.

We report the case of a 43-year-old patient with HIV infection treated with antiretroviral therapy, which was complicated by immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy and renal failure, who subsequently was transplanted using a deceased donor kidney transplant. During the late posttransplant period we detected specific anti-donor HLA antibodies showing a preserved alloantigen response. A renal biopsy showed no acute cellular or humoral rejection, an absence of pericapillary C4d deposits or SV40 infected cells, but demonstrated IgA mesangial deposits and mild interstitial fibrosis probably related to calcineurin inhibitor toxicity.

Late acute humoral rejection in low-risk renal transplant recipients induced with an interleukin-2 receptor antagonist and maintained with standard therapy: preliminary communication.

Acute and fulminant hepatitis induced by flutamide: case series report and review of the literature.

Flutamide is a non-steroidal anti-androgenic drug, commonly used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, acne and hirsutism. This drug may induce various degrees of liver injury, including acute liver failure (ALF), with further need for liver transplantation. Here, we present a report of 10 consecutive patients seen in a period of 14 years, with acute liver toxicity induced by flutamide (in most cases severe hepatotoxicity): 3 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 75 and 29 years old, respectively.

[Celiac disease presenting as an intestinal intussusception: report of one case].

Acute abdominal pain caused by perforation, intestinal lymphoma or intussusception is an uncommon manifestation in adult celiac disease. We report a 49 year-old female with history of irritable bowel syndrome and osteoporosis consulting for acute abdominal pain and severe abdominal distention. Abdominal CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed a jejunal intussusception and other radiological alterations that suggested the possibility of celiac disease.

Effects of rapid global warming at the Paleocene-Eocene boundary on neotropical vegetation.

Temperatures in tropical regions are estimated to have increased by 3° to 5°C, compared with Late Paleocene values, during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56.3 million years ago) event. We investigated the tropical forest response to this rapid warming by evaluating the palynological record of three stratigraphic sections in eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.

Correlations of recognition memory performance with expression and methylation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in rats.

Self-cleaving purification tags re-engineered for rapid Topo® cloning.

In this work, our previously reported ΔI-CM and ΔI(G)-CM mutant inteins were rationally re-engineered to be compatible with Invitrogen's Topo® cloning system. The resulting new inteins include the vaccinia virus topoisomerase I DNA recognition sequence TCCTT at their 3' ends, making them compatible with the highly convenient one-step Topo® cloning method. Addition of the Topo® recognition sequence resulted in an altered amino acid sequence at the C-termini of the inteins, changing their final five residues from VVVHN to VLVHN.

Brain glutamine synthesis requires neuronal-born aspartate as amino donor for glial glutamate formation.

The glutamate-glutamine cycle faces a drain of glutamate by oxidation, which is balanced by the anaplerotic synthesis of glutamate and glutamine in astrocytes. De novo synthesis of glutamate by astrocytes requires an amino group whose origin is unknown. The deficiency in Aralar/AGC1, the main mitochondrial carrier for aspartate-glutamate expressed in brain, results in a drastic fall in brain glutamine production but a modest decrease in brain glutamate levels, which is not due to decreases in neuronal or synaptosomal glutamate content.

Background: Hypogonadism is frequent in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Salivary testosterone (Sal-T) is a non-invasive tool to screen androgen deficiency in adult male with normal renal function. However, available data on its utility in ESRD are not conclusive.

LAMINARIOCOLAX SP. (PHAEOPHYCEAE) ASSOCIATED WITH GALL DEVELOPMENTS IN LESSONIA NIGRESCENS (PHAEOPHYCEAE)(1).

As part of a long-term study on the biology and ecology of the intertidal kelp Lessonia nigrescens Bory, we report on the occurrence of gall development on this alga, identified the possible causal agent, and assessed the extent of the phenomenon in two wild stands of the host. Our results showed that galls affecting natural populations of L. nigrescens were associated with the infection by a filamentous brown algal endophyte of the genus Laminariocolax.
