The green micro-alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is an elegant model organism to study all aspects of oxygenic photosynthesis. Chlorophyll (Chl) and heme are major tetrapyrroles that play an essential role in energy metabolism in photosynthetic organisms and are synthesized via a common branched tetrapyrrole biosynthetic pathway. One of the enzymes in the pathway is Mg chelatase (MgChel) which inserts Mg (2+) into protoporphyrin IX (PPIX, proto) to form magnesium-protoporphyrin IX (MgPPIX, Mgproto), the first biosynthetic intermediate in the Chl branch.

Background: Inadequate physical activity is a risk factor for several lifestyle diseases. In the current study we have tried to evaluate the physical activity levels in urban Indian pubertal children as well as investigate the relationship between step counts and body composition.

Methods: A total of 1032 children aged 12 to 15 years wore pedometers for 2 weekdays and 2 weekend days, the final cohort included 910 subjects with 467 boys and 443 girls.

Preliminary study on the relationship between visitation in the emergency department and posttraumatic mental health.

This study documented family/friend support to patients in the Emergency Department (ED), including bedside visits and transportation of patients from the ED after discharge, and measured depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms within 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months after motor vehicle accidents. Stress and depression symptoms significantly decreased during the initial three months. Family/friend visitation in the ED was negatively associated with anxiety and depression symptoms within 2 weeks and with stress symptoms months after trauma.

To date no information exists regarding the rs1333039 SNP which showed the strongest association in the WTCCC GWAS with CAD risk in the Indian population. Metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) plays important roles in modulating neural activity and plasticity and has been associated with several neuropathological disorders. Previous work has shown that genetic ablation or pharmacological inhibition of mGluR5 disrupts fear extinction and spatial reversal learning, suggesting that mGluR5 signaling is required for different forms of adaptive learning. Here, we tested whether ADX47273, a selective positive allosteric modulator (PAM) of mGluR5, can enhance adaptive learning in mice.

Validation of the telephone-administered PHQ-9 against the in-person administered SCID-I major depression module.

Background: We assessed item-to-item correspondence between the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I) major depression episode portion of the major depressive module.

Method: Four hundred and ninety-eight soldiers in the Ohio National Guard were administered the PHQ-9 and SCID-I. Data were analyzed using chi-square analyses, logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses and diagnostic efficiency statistics.

Changes in the Beck Depression Inventory-II's underlying symptom structure over 1 month of inpatient treatment.

Research has not investigated changes in the symptom structure of depression over the course of mental health treatment. In the present study, 1025 psychiatric inpatients were recruited and assessed for depression symptom severity using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) at admission and after 1 month of treatment. A three-factor BDI-II model was tested using confirmatory factor analysis and fit reasonably well at both time points.

We study the dynamics of the mercury beating heart (MBH) system in an acidic solution in the absence of a strong oxidant. Furthermore, the system is subjected to an external square wave potential. It was observed that different shapes (circular, elliptical, triangular, and multilobed stars) of the mercury drop could be stabilized as the frequency of the external potential and the volume of the mercury were varied.

Background: In the present study, the authors investigated the relationship between the underlying symptom dimensions of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dimensions of major depressive disorder (MDD).

Method: A sample of 1266 Ohio National Guard soldiers with a history of overseas deployment participated and were administered the PTSD Checklist (assessing PTSD) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (assessing depression).

Results: Using confirmatory factor analysis, results demonstrated that both PTSD's dysphoria and hyperarousal factors were more related to depression's somatic than non-somatic factor.

Cardiac rehabilitation after myocardial infarction.

Cardiac rehabilitation/secondary prevention programs are recognized as integral to the comprehensive care of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), and as such are recommended as useful and effective (Class I) by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in the treatment of patients with CHD. The term cardiac rehabilitation refers to coordinated, multifaceted interventions designed to optimize a cardiac patient's physical, psychological, and social functioning, in addition to stabilizing, slowing, or even reversing the progression of the underlying atherosclerotic processes, thereby reducing morbidity and mortality. Cardiac rehabilitation, aims at returning the patient back to normal functioning in a safe and effective manner and to enhance the psychosocial and vocational state of the patient.

Altered maturation of the primary somatosensory cortex in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited form of intellectual disability and results from the loss of the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP). Many fragile X-related cognitive and behavioral features emerge during childhood and are associated with abnormal synaptic and cellular organization of the cerebral cortex. Identifying the roles of FMRP in cortical development will provide a basis for understanding the pathogenesis of the syndrome.

Genetic ablation of the GluK4 kainate receptor subunit causes anxiolytic and antidepressant-like behavior in mice.

There is a clear link between dysregulation of glutamatergic signaling and mood disorders. Genetic variants in the glutamate receptor gene GRIK4, which encodes the kainate receptor subunit GluK4, alter the susceptibility for depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Here we demonstrate that Grik4(-/-) mice have reduced anxiety and an antidepressant-like phenotype.

Antibodies to metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 in the Ophelia syndrome.

Objective: To report the metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) as the autoantigen of antibodies from 2 patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and limbic encephalopathy (Ophelia syndrome).

Methods: Immunohistochemistry with brain tissue and cultures of rat hippocampal neurons were used to demonstrate antibodies. Immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry, and mGluR5-null mice served to identify the antigen.

Background And Aims: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, especially so in Indians. Recently, genome-wide studies have implicated SNPs in the 58 kb region of chromosome 9p21 to be associated with CAD. In the current study we evaluated the association of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs10757278 at the 9p21 locus with CAD in a population from Western India.

Background: A single-nucleotide polymorphism Trp719Arg (rs20455T>C) in the kinesin-like protein 6 (KIF6), which is a protein involved in intracellular transport, has been shown to predict increased coronary artery disease (CAD) risk and event reduction during statin therapy.

Aim: In the current study, we have evaluated the association of the variant Trp719Arg with CAD/non fatal myocardial infarction (MI) in Western Indians.

Methods: Genotyping for Trp719Arg was done by an allele-specific real-time assay in 227 cases with confirmed CAD and 150 controls.
