In this paper, I distinguish three general approaches to public trust in science, which I call the individual approach, the semi-social approach, and the social approach, and critically examine their proposed solutions to what I call the problem of harmful distrust. I argue that, despite their differences, the individual and the semi-social approaches see the solution to the problem of harmful distrust as consisting primarily in trying to persuade individual citizens to trust science and that both approaches face two general problems, which I call the problem of overidealizing science and the problem of overburdening citizens. I then argue that in order to avoid these problems we need to embrace a (thoroughly) social approach to public trust in science, which emphasizes the social dimensions of the reception, transmission, and uptake of scientific knowledge in society and the ways in which social forces influence both positively and negatively the trustworthiness of science.

In order to properly respond to an emergency caused by an accident in a nuclear power plant with a spread of radionuclides in the atmosphere, we propose a field procedure to perform a large-scale individual thyroid monitoring of internal contamination due to inhalation of I, by means of non-spectrometric equipment, in particular dose rate meters. Specific attention is paid to the individual monitoring of children, because of the very high radiosensitivity of the child's thyroid to the carcinogenic effects of ionising radiation. The device performance was evaluated by measuring mock iodine sources provided in the Child and Adult Thyroid Monitoring After Reactor Accident (CAThyMARA) intercomparison and, just for a scintillator dose rate meter, by means of 60 s acquisitions of healthy volunteers' thyroids.

The paper describes the cases of 3 female health operators with implanted copper IUDs, developing menometrorrhagia some months after an increase of the working time in a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Unit (1.5 T), that progressively disappeared when the previous organization, involving discontinuous work shifts at MRI, was re-established. No known factors possibly related to menometrorrhagia were evidenced in the 3 operators, supporting the hypothesis of a role of the exposure to the electromagnetic fields (EMF) induced by the MRI system in symptoms induction.

Of 37 multiple sclerosis patients, 19 suboptimal responders were randomized to 375 (n=12) or 250µg (n=7) interferon (IFN)-β-1b. mRNA levels of 23 cytokines, chemokines, and chemokine receptors were quantified by TaqMan low-density array (TLDA) real-time polymerase chain reaction. At present, two types of recombinant human interferon (IFN)-beta are in clinical use. IFN-beta1a is produced in genetically engineered Chinese hamster ovary cells, and its amino acid sequence and glycosylation pattern are identical to those of endogenous human IFN-beta. The beneficial effect of IFN-beta in multiple sclerosis (MS) probably results from different mechanisms of action, such as a direct effect on plasma cells modulating IgG synthesis, an increase of interleukin (IL)-10 levels, the inhibition of IL-1beta and tumour necrosis factor alpha, the stimulation of IL-1 receptor antagonist production, the inhibition of proliferation of leukocytes, a decreased antigen presentation in microglia, a reduction of T cell migration into the brain by inhibition of the activity of T cell matrix metalloproteinases, and a downregulation of adhesion molecules.
