There is an acute need for more effective interventions to improve patients' remission and quality of life and reduce the condition's economic burden on the healthcare system.

Cost-effectiveness of pharmacogenomic-guided treatment for major depression.

Background: Pharmacogenomic testing to identify variations in genes that influence metabolism of antidepressant medications can enhance efficacy and reduce adverse effects of pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder. We sought to establish the cost-effectiveness of implementing pharmacogenomic testing to guide prescription of antidepressants.

Methods: We developed a discrete-time microsimulation model of care pathways for major depressive disorder in British Columbia, Canada, to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of pharmacogenomic testing from the public payer's perspective over 20 years.

Clearance of defective muscle stem cells by senolytics restores myogenesis in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Muscle stem cells, the engine of muscle repair, are affected in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1); however, the underlying molecular mechanism and the impact on the disease severity are still elusive. Here, we show using patients' samples that muscle stem cells/myoblasts exhibit signs of cellular senescence in vitro and in situ. Single cell RNAseq uncovers a subset of senescent myoblasts expressing high levels of genes related to the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).

Negative Myoclonus Secondary to Thalamic Infarction: Case Report.

Background: Movement disorders are an infrequent presentation to stroke, and in this context, negative myoclonus is not among the most common movement disorders, hence we present a case of negative myoclonus secondary to thalamic stroke.

Case: A 75 year old male presented with left central facial palsy and negative myoclonus on his left upper limb. He was submitted to a diagnostic workup, with evidence of a right thalamic stroke.

We aimed to perform an economic evaluation of peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and laparoscopic Heller myotomy (LHM) for the treatment of achalasia. An economic cost-utility analysis was carried out over a time horizon of 1 year. Patients with achalasia who were admitted to the gastroenterology outpatient clinic of a public tertiary referral hospital were assigned to undergo POEM or LHM.

BAG3 Mice as a Model of BAG3 Myofibrillar Myopathy.

BCL-2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) is a co-chaperone to heat shock proteins important in degrading misfolded proteins through chaperone-assisted selective autophagy. The recurrent dominant BAG3-P209L mutation results in a severe childhood-onset myofibrillar myopathy (MFM) associated with progressive muscle weakness, cardiomyopathy, and respiratory failure. Because a homozygous knock-in (KI) strain for the mP215L mutation homologous to the human P209L mutation did not have a gross phenotype, compound heterozygote knockout (KO) and KI mP215L mice were generated to establish whether further reduction in BAG3 expression would lead to a phenotype.

Background: Implementing adequate strategies to assess the value of health services plays a central role in the effort to deal with the financial pressures faced by health care systems worldwide. Radicicol enhances the regeneration of skeletal muscle injured by crotoxin via decrease of NF-kB activation.

This study evaluated cellular and molecular effects of radicicol, a heat shock protein (HSP) inducer, on the regeneration of skeletal muscle injured by crotoxin, the main toxin isolated from Crotalus durissus terrificus venom. Regenerating muscles treated with radicicol had decreased NF-kB activation. Differentiating myoblasts treated with radicicol showed reduced number of NF-kB positive nuclei and increased fusion index.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of these former oncology patients that are now oncology nurses.

Uterine Artery Embolization and Surgical Methods for the Treatment of Symptomatic Uterine Leiomyomas: A Systemic Review and Meta-analysis Followed by Indirect Treatment Comparison.

Purpose: There is significant discussion and uncertainty about the optimal management of symptomatic uterine leiomyomas (SULs). Nonsurgical procedures such as uterine artery embolization (UAE) have been developed. The goal of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis and an indirect treatment comparison to examine the comparative efficacy and safety of the surgical procedures to treat SULs compared with UAE.

Background: Many decision-analytic models with varying structures have been developed to inform resource allocation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Objectives: To review COPD models for their adherence to the best practice modeling recommendations and their assumptions regarding important aspects of the natural history of COPD.

Methods: A systematic search of English articles reporting on the development or application of a decision-analytic model in COPD was performed in MEDLINE, Embase, and citations within reviewed articles.

Developing the Evidence Base in Pediatric Oncology Nursing Practice for Promoting Health-Related Quality of Life in Pediatric Oncology Patients.

Research has shown that self-esteem and hopefulness are positively related among female childhood cancer survivors (CCS) and contribute to their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). HRQOL remains a significant outcome of treatment for CCS. This study examined the relationships among self-esteem, hopefulness, and HRQOL in young adult female CCS to inform the development of evidence-based practice guidelines for pediatric oncology nursing practice.

Pediatric Palliative Care Program versus Usual Care and Healthcare Resource Utilization in British Columbia: A Matched-Pairs Cohort Study.

Background: Evidence on the impact of pediatric palliative care programs (PPCP) on resource utilization is scarce and requires broader measures to include utilization beyond the hospital setting.

Objective: This research aims to provide a Canadian comparative analysis between children in a PPCP with those under usual care, including hospice use to inpatient resource use measurement.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective matched-pairs (disease and age at death) cohort comparison of children who died in hospice versus hospital (never enrolled in a PPCP), from 2008 to 2012.

From Chemo to College: The College Experience of Childhood Cancer Survivors.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how childhood cancer survivors experience college life. Five undergraduate students who are childhood cancer survivors, aged 19 to 22 years, participated in a 75-minute focus group interview. The survivors attended the same university located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

MELD Score Is Not Related to Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis.

This study investigates the correlation between SBP and repeated paracentesis, and its relation to MELD score, in cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites in an outpatient setting. Through the data base, 148 cirrhotic patients were prospectively included in the study with refractory ascites undergoing relief paracentesis from March 2012 to March 2013. Demographics data, etiology of liver disease, MELD score, and inscription on the waiting list for liver transplantation were analyzed.

Oxygen saturation and heart rate monitoring during a single session of early rehabilitation after cardiac surgery.

Background: Early rehabilitation after cardiac surgery aims to prevent immobilization, to reduce the effects of surgery on the respiratory function and to facilitate the recovery of autonomy in the activities of daily living (ADL), after discharge. Nevertheless the optimal perioperative physical therapy care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery is not well established. Moreover, most of the studies monitored peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate (HR) during surgery or focused only on their recovery after rehabilitation and not on their pathways during a session of exercises.

Effect of pediatric palliative care programs on health care resource utilization and costs among children with life-threatening conditions: a systematic review of comparative studies.

Background: Pediatric palliative care is a relatively new and evolving field, and the cost of pediatric palliative care programs is unclear. We conducted a systematic review to compare inpatient health care utilization and costs among children with life-threatening conditions who have accessed a pediatric palliative care program and those who have not.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL and LILACS databases from January 2000 to July 2013, as well as the grey literature, for experimental or observational studies that compared pediatric palliative care programs with usual care.
