Objective: Pedal medial arterial calcification (pMAC) is associated with major amputation in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). We hypothesize that this association would be related to unresolved distal ischemia. We investigated relationships across pMAC score, hemodynamic change, and major amputation after infrainguinal revascularization for CLTI.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAtrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cardiac arrhythmia and its prevalence increases with age. AF is strongly associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and cardiovascular mortality. Among the risk factors associated with AF onset and severity, obesity and inflammation play a prominent role.

Here, we analyzed SARS-CoV-2 samples collected from personnel located at the US/NATO bases across Afghanistan.
Results: Sequencing and phylogenetic analyses revealed at least 16 independent introductions of SARS-CoV-2 into four of these relatively isolated compounds during April and May 2021, including multiple introductions of Alpha and Delta variants.
Background: Post-operative delirium (POD) is common yet often underdiagnosed following vascular surgery. Elderly patients with advanced peripheral artery disease may be at particular risk for POD yet understanding of the clinical predictors and impact of POD is incomplete. We sought to identify POD predictors and associated resource utilization after infrainguinal lower extremity bypass.

Methods: Forty-eight single-rooted premolars with single canals (24 each from diabetic and non-diabetic) were selected, and root canals were shaped by using rotary ProTaper files. Dentine slices of 4 mm were transversely sectioned from the middle root third.
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains are the primary cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). UPEC strains are able to invade, multiply and persisting in host cells. Therefore, UPEC strains are associated to recurrent UTIs requiring long-term antibiotic therapy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNeuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial malignant tumor in children. Although the survival rate of NB has improved over the years, the outcome of NB still remains poor for over 30% of cases. A more accurate risk stratification remains a key point in the study of NB and the availability of novel prognostic biomarkers of "high-risk" at diagnosis could help improving patient stratification and predicting outcome.

The aim of present study was to establish normal non-invasive MEE and MEEi reference values.
Methods: In total, 1168 healthy subjects underwent physical examinations, clinical assessment, and standardized transthoracic echocardiographic (TTE) examination.
Circulating microRNAs (miRNA) have been proposed as specific biomarkers for several diseases. Quantitative Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR) is the gold standard technique currently used to evaluate miRNAs expression from different sources. In the last few years, digital PCR (dPCR) emerged as a complementary and accurate detection method.

Mechanisms leading to POAF are not completely understood and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) inflammation could be a potent trigger. Here, we aim at exploring the link between EAT-secreted interleukin (IL)-1β, atrial remodeling, and POAF in a population of coronary artery disease (CAD) patients.

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity of an in vitro multiplex assay using a comprehensive panel of fish allergens and the cross-reactivity patterns between different molecular components.
Methods: 56 subjects with fish allergy were enrolled.
Objectives: There are few contemporary data regarding health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measures in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLI).
Methods: The Best Endovascular versus Best Surgical Therapy in Patients with CLI (BEST-CLI) trial is an ongoing, National Institutes of Health-sponsored, multicenter, randomized, controlled trial comparing revascularization strategies in patients with CLI. BEST-CLI baseline HRQOL measures were evaluated for patient-specific variables that were associated with poor HRQOL and then compared with published outcomes.
In recent years, several studies have been published on the prognosis of children with congenital solitary kidney (CSK), with controversial results, and a worldwide consensus on management and follow-up is lacking. In this consensus statement, the Italian Society of Pediatric Nephrology summarizes the current knowledge on CSK and presents recommendations for its management, including diagnostic approach, nutritional and lifestyle habits, and follow-up. We recommend that any antenatal suspicion/diagnosis of CSK be confirmed by neonatal ultrasound (US), avoiding the routine use of further imaging if no other anomalies of kidney/urinary tract are detected.

While processing of texture differences is a prerequisite for the use of this cue to extract figure-ground organization, these stages are distinct processes. One potential indicator of this distinction is the possibility that texture statistics play a different role in the figure vs.

In Fall 2020, universities saw extensive transmission of SARS-CoV-2 among their populations, threatening health of the university and surrounding communities, and viability of in-person instruction. Here we report a case study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where a multimodal "SHIELD: Target, Test, and Tell" program, with other non-pharmaceutical interventions, was employed to keep classrooms and laboratories open. The program included epidemiological modeling and surveillance, fast/frequent testing using a novel low-cost and scalable saliva-based RT-qPCR assay for SARS-CoV-2 that bypasses RNA extraction, called covidSHIELD, and digital tools for communication and compliance.

Within just one lineage, the tribe Haplochromini, at least 6 unique sex-chromosome systems have been identified. Here we focus on characterizing sex chromosomes in cichlids from the Lake Victoria basin.

Here, we generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)-derived neurons (idNs) from a patient belonging to a genetically well-characterized Italian family, carrying the c.

The IgG4 monoclonal antibody dupilumab targets the Interleukin-4 receptor alpha chain, thus preventing the biological effects of the cytokines IL-4 and IL-13, that are essential for the Th2 response. Several controlled trials showed that dupilumab is effective and safe in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), thus resulting in approval by regulatory agencies.

Background: The known risks and benefits of native kidney biopsies are mainly based on the findings of retrospective studies. The aim of this multicentre prospective study was to evaluate the safety of percutaneous renal biopsies and quantify biopsy-related complication rates in Italy.
Methods: The study examined the results of native kidney biopsies performed in 54 Italian nephrology centres between 2012 and 2020.
