Methods: Dialysis patients alive on January 2010 or starting dialysis between January 2010 and January 2013 were enrolled and retrospectively evaluated. Patients were divided into three groups: No-Indication, Indication-With ICD and Indication-Without ICD.

Introduction: Kidney transplantation represents the best therapeutic option for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), providing the best outcomes for survival, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness. To increase kidney donations, in 2007, the Italian IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo Foundation in Pavia designed and conducted Programma Alba, a protocol for organ donation after cardiac death (DCD). This study evaluated the costs and health outcomes of DCD transplantation and in all types of transplants compared with current clinical practice.

Mental health and physical activity in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a brief review.

This review was designed to consider the available literature concerning mental health and physical activity in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). A systematic approach was taken and two electronic databases (PubMed and EBSCO Research articles published between 1970 and 2013) were searched in 2013 to inform a narrative review. Inclusion criteria encompassed requirements for the research to involve a physical activity intervention and assessment of mental health outcomes in women with PCOS.

Optimal weekly scheduling in fractionated radiotherapy: effect of an upper bound on the dose fraction size.

This work concerns the optimization of the dose fractionation for cancer radiotherapy schedules of the kind one fraction/day, five fractions/week, assuming a fixed overall treatment time. Constraints are set to limit the radiation damages to surrounding normal tissues, as well as the daily fraction size. Post-traumatic headaches: an epidemiological overview.

Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is the most common secondary headache disorder, corresponding to approximately 4 % of all symptomatic headaches. PTH, a cardinal feature of the post-concussive syndrome, usually shows a phenotype similar to migraine or tension-type headache. However, rare cases of PTH similar to trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias have been described.

Post-traumatic headaches: a clinical overview.

Headache attributed to head and/or neck trauma or injury, the so-called post-traumatic headache (PTH), is the most common secondary headache disorder and one of the most controversial clinical entities in the headache field, due to its unclear pathophysiological mechanisms and the unsolved role of associated psychological and medico-legal aspects. PTH, as a significant cause of morbidity after traumatic brain injury, may occur as an isolated symptom or as one of a constellation of symptoms known as post-concussive syndrome. However, among the classical teleosts, such as salmonid, carp, and zebrafish, the chorion glycoproteins are synthesized in the oocyte, as in higher vertebrates. Sturgeon, which are members of the subclass Chondrostei, represent an ancient lineage of ray-finned fishes that differ from other teleosts in that their sperm possess acrosomes, their eggs have numerous micropyles, and early embryo development is similar to that of amphibians.

Background: The notion of 'functional uncertainty' during sleep was first proposed to indicate an inability of the central nervous system to maintain stable states by coordinating physiological processes. While the presence of functional uncertainty phenomena has been shown in infants and hypothesized in the elderly, its actual occurrence in the aged population has never been systematically investigated.

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify, in the sleep of aged individuals, indexes of sleep instability and fragmentation as markers of functional uncertainty, by comparing a sample of healthy elderly subjects to one of young adults.

The present study is aimed to explore DMN functional connectivity in patients with migraine without aura (MwoA) and investigate its clinical significance.

A Kalman filter approach for denoising and deblurring 3-D microscopy images.

This paper proposes a new method for removing noise and blurring from 3D microscopy images. The main contribution is the definition of a space-variant generating model of a 3-D signal, which is capable to stochastically describe a wide class of 3-D images. Unlike other approaches, the space-variant structure allows the model to consider the information on edge locations, if available.

Efficacy and safety of once-monthly continuous erythropoietin receptor activator in patients with chronic renal anemia.

Background: In the management of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 undergoing dialysis (CKD-5D), maintaining hemoglobin (Hb) within the range recommended by the guidelines is challenging.

Methods: The CARISMA study aim was to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of a once-monthly continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) for the treatment of anemia in CKD-5D patients. In this single-arm, multicenter, open-label, phase IIIb study, we screened adult patients from 66 centers in Italy receiving intravenous epoetin alfa or beta or darbepoetin alfa.

The role of BOLD-fMRI in elucidating migraine pathophysiology.

Migraine is a neurologic disorder characterized by disabling attacks of throbbing headache with specific features and associated symptoms. Despite the recent discoveries in basic neurosciences, migraine pathophysiology is not completely understood. Nevertheless, in the last decades, advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have significantly provided new insights into migraine mechanisms.

However, there is no report about its impact on differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) presentation, aggressiveness, or evolution.
