Background: Leptomeningeal enhancement (LME) has been described as a biomarker of meningeal inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS).
Objective: The aim of this study was to (1) assess if LME is predictive of disability worsening in progressive MS (pMS) patients and (2) investigate the pathological substrates of LME in an independent post-mortem MS series.
Methods: In total, 115 pMS patients were imaged yearly with 1.
Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by a spectrum of phenotypes, but only a few studies have addressed the presence of parkinsonian (PK) symptoms. The aim of our study was to investigate the occurrence of PK features in a prospective population-based cohort of ALS patients, determining their demographic, clinical, neuropsychological and genetic characteristics, and identifying their morphological and functional imaging correlates.
Methods: A consecutive series of ALS patients were enrolled and prospectively followed for 2 years.
Hereditary ataxias are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by cerebellar ataxia as the main clinical feature, and a large spectrum of neurological-associated symptoms and possible multi-organ affection. Image-based approaches to hereditary ataxias in childhood have already been proposed. The aim of this review is to yield the main reports of neuroimaging patterns and diagnostic algorithms and compare them with the results from our study of 23 young patients addressed for ataxia, with subsequent genetic or metabolic diagnosis.

Relatively little is known about the brain metabolism profile of patients carrying the expansion. Our aim was to identify the [(18)F]FDG PET profile in ALS patients with the C9ORF72 expansion (C9ORF72-ALS).

We present the first case of an ALS patient carrying a de novo nonsense mutation in exon 14 of the FUS gene (c.1483c>t; p.

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common form of motor neuron disease. We describe the case of a patient with a rapidly progressive form of ALS characterized by both upper and lower motor neuron impairment, no early bulbar signs and severe pain in all four extremities. The patient had a heterozygous c.

We examined the post-mortem brain of two Italian patients affected by ALS who underwent cellular transplantation in Beijing with their consent. Our aim was to assess the events following the graft procedure to possibly support the rationale of the treatment strategy.

Biological markers, as well as magnetic resonance imaging and clinical examinations, were used to assess the disease trend. Those workers still employed were immediately removed from exposure.

A 34-years-old floor-layer developed optic neuropathy and motor neuron disease after being accidentally exposed to a solvent mixture containing methanol and other substances. Optic neuropathy is a complication of methanol poisoning, but the onset of a motor neuron disorder resembling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis after the exposure to these substances has not been previously described. The temporal onset of the clinical symptoms, biological plausibility, young age of the patient and absence of neurological disorders in the family history raises suspicion of a possible causative relationship.
