Background: Trace elements, including zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), although toxic at higher concentrations are known to play important roles in the maintenance of human health and neurodevelopment. Few epidemiological studies have investigated the association between prenatal or early postnatal Cu and Zn levels and child neurodevelopment. The aim of this research is to assess the association between child neurodevelopment at 18 months of age and cord blood and breast milk concentrations of Cu and Zn in Italian mother-child pairs enrolled in the Italian Northern Adriatic Cohort II (NAC-II), a part of the "Public health impact of long-term, low-level, mixed element exposure in susceptible population strata" project PHIME.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) response to anti-IgE treatment can be rapid, late or absent. Recently, potential mechanisms of activation of mast cells alternative to FceRI, including mas-related G protein-coupled receptor X2 (MRGPRX2), activation of coagulation cascade, and activation of eosinophils have been described. We measured several potential in-vitro markers, including well-known MRGPRX2 activators, in sera of patients CSU both responding and not responding to omalizumab.

Background: Increased lung-cancer risks for low socioeconomic status (SES) groups are only partially attributable to smoking habits. Little effort has been made to investigate the persistent risks related to low SES by quantification of potential biases.

Methods: Based on 12 case-control studies, including 18 centers of the international SYNERGY project (16,550 cases, 20,147 controls), we estimated controlled direct effects (CDE) of SES on lung cancer via multiple logistic regression, adjusted for age, study center, and smoking habits, and stratified by sex.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the frequency and characteristics of tenosynovitis in young patients with new-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) who have active ankle disease and whether its detection impacts the likelihood of achieving inactive disease status.
  • It involved 45 children, showing that 62.2% had tenosynovitis detected via ultrasound (US), while 37.8% had isolated arthritis, with no significant differences in achieving inactive disease between those with and without tenosynovitis.
  • The findings suggest that even though tenosynovitis is common at the onset of JIA, it does not negatively affect the chances of reaching clinically inactive disease early in the treatment process.

Article Synopsis
  • Radon is a radioactive gas that can increase the risk of lung cancer, and researchers studied this relationship using data from a large group of people from Europe, North America, and Israel.
  • They found that lower levels of radon exposure (under 200 Bq/m) had a complex effect on lung cancer risk, with the lowest risk at an exposure of 58 Bq/m.
  • The study showed that men and younger people (under 69) were more affected by radon exposure, and the results suggest that measuring radon exposure might not always follow the usual rules we think it does.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of virtual voice therapy during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in Italy via the collection of opinions of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). All SLPs who regularly carried out their professional activity in public hospitals, private hospitals, or private practices in Italy were asked to fill out an online survey consisting of two sections: (1) demographic information (age, gender, work setting, seniority, working time, and regular use of virtual voice therapy) and (2) opinions regarding telerehabilitation (motivation, personal satisfaction, effectiveness, and future needs and uses). A total of 299 SLPs (mean age 39.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated neonatal seizures (NS) in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit, focusing on their epidemiology, seizure types, EEG findings, and underlying causes over a period from 2009 to 2022.
  • Out of 91,253 neonates, 145 experienced NS, with a notable incidence of 1.2 per 1,000 live births, revealing a higher genetic contribution (26.2%) and lower hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) rates (23.4%) compared to earlier research.
  • Findings indicated that seizure types and EEG patterns were crucial in determining the etiology, with specific associations noted between seizure characteristics and conditions like preterm birth, infections, vascular issues,

BackgroundHaemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a severe complication of infection with Shiga toxin-producing (STEC). Although the reservoirs of STEC are known, the source of the infection of sporadic cases is often unknown. In 2023, we observed several cases of bloody diarrhoea with STEC infection in children and adolescents returning from vacations.

Objectives: We aimed to estimate the fraction of deaths from ovarian cancer attributable to asbestos exposure in Lombardy Region, Italy, using a novel approach that exploits the fact that ovarian cancer asbestos exposure is associated with pleural cancer and other risk factors for breast cancer.

Methods: This ecological study is based on the Italian National Institute of Statistics mortality data. We formulate a trivariate Bayesian joint disease model to estimate the attributable fraction (AF) and the number of ovarian cancer deaths attributable to asbestos exposure from the geographic distribution of ovarian, pleural and breast cancer mortality at the municipality level from 2000 to 2018.

APOBEC enzymes are part of the innate immunity and are responsible for restricting viruses and retroelements by deaminating cytosine residues. Most solid tumors harbor different levels of somatic mutations attributed to the off-target activities of APOBEC3A (A3A) and/or APOBEC3B (A3B). However, how APOBEC3A/B enzymes shape the tumor evolution in the presence of exogenous mutagenic processes is largely unknown.
