A Web-Based Decision Aid (myAID) to Enhance Quality of Life, Empowerment, Decision Making, and Disease Control for Patients With Ulcerative Colitis: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) often face complex treatment decisions. Although shared decision making (SDM) is considered important, tools to facilitate this are currently lacking for UC. A recent pilot study of a novel Web-based decision aid (DA), my Actively Informed Decision (myAID), has suggested its acceptability and feasibility for informing treatment decisions and facilitating SDM in clinical practice.

Practical management of inflammatory bowel disease patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: expert commentary from the Gastroenterological Society of Australia Inflammatory Bowel Disease faculty.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has emerged as a public health emergency and challenged healthcare systems globally. In a minority of patients, SARS-CoV-2 manifests with a severe acute respiratory illness and currently there is insufficient data regarding the virulence of COVID-19 in inflammatory bowel disease patients taking immunosuppressive therapy. This review aims to summarise the current literature and provide guidance on the management of inflammatory bowel disease patients in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Australasian setting.

Modifiable health behaviors among low-income, uninsured men with prostate cancer.

Background: As life expectancy of men with prostate cancer (CaP)improves, the risks of chronic diseases and comorbid conditions become more relevant. Improving modifiable health behaviors now serves as a focus of guidelines to reduce all-cause morbidity and mortality from chronic disease among CaP survivors. Few studies have reported on these health behaviors in low-income, uninsured men with CaP METHODS: In addition to baseline demographic data, we collected four health behaviors in low-income men with CaP via telephone survey: physical activity, dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, weight management, and alcohol consumption.

Virtual image of a hand displaced in space influences action performance of the real hand.

The rubber hand illusion (RHI) demonstrates that under some circumstances a fake hand can be regarded as part of one's body; the RHI and related phenomena have been used to explore the flexibility of the body schema. Recent work has shown that a sense of embodiment may be generated by virtual reality (VR). In a series of experiments, we used VR to assess the effects of the displacement of the virtual image of subjects' hands on action.

Attitudes and Knowledge of Australian Gastroenterologists Around the Use of Medicinal Cannabis for Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background: Medicinal cannabis (MC) is being used for symptomatic relief by many patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), often independently of clinical guidance. Such use presents challenges for supporting clinicians. The aim of this study was to determine the current attitudes, knowledge, and experience of gastroenterologists toward patient use of MC for symptom management in IBD.

An Ethics-based approach to Global Health Research Part 3: Emphasis on Partnership Funding.

Acquiring funding for global health research within pharmacy can be challenging, particularly for new investigators who may have a strong interest in resolving global dilemmas related to health. Moreover, there can be inherent imbalances and ethical issues when navigating the funding process for global partnerships. There exists a lack of literature providing ethical guidance for mitigating dilemmas that may arise.

Aeromedical retrievals for gastrointestinal disorders in rural and remote Australia: the need for improved access to specialist advice.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) provides medical care to populations without access to traditional health-care services. From 2014 to 2018 the RFDS conducted 6007 (≈1201/year) aeromedical retrievals for gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. More detailed research is needed to determine specific GI disorders that contributed to this caseload, and in particular inform whether the establishment of a GI specialist service is justified.

Methods: Literature reviews were conducted for 18 key questions across 6 broad topics around cholecystectomy directed by a steering group and subject experts from 5 surgical societies (Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and European Association for Endoscopic Surgery).

Context: The International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care developed a consensus-based definition of palliative care (PC) that focuses on the relief of serious health-related suffering, a concept put forward by the Lancet Commission Global Access to Palliative Care and Pain Relief.

Objective: The main objective of this article is to present the research behind the new definition.

Methods: The three-phased consensus process involved health care workers from countries in all income levels.

Localization of the Sphenopalatine Ganglion Within the Pterygopalatine Fossa on Computed Tomography Angiography-A Potential Role in the Setting of Sphenopalatine Ganglion Microstimulator Implantation.

Objectives: A recent approach to treatment of cluster headaches (CH) employs a microstimulator device for on-demand neuromodulation of the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) during an acute CH attack. A precise anatomical localization of the SPG within the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) is optimal in order to position the SPG electrode array. This study aims to investigate a novel approach for SPG localization using computed tomography angiographic studies (CTA).

The Demographic and Neurocognitive Profile of Clients Diagnosed With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in PATCHES Paediatrics Clinics Across Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Background: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a diagnosis relating to neurocognitive impairments associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. A key aspect of improving FASD diagnostic processes and management is understanding the demographic and neurocognitive profile of those living with FASD. The aim of this study was to describe the demographic and neurocognitive profile of the first 199 individuals diagnosed with FASD in PATCHES Paediatrics clinics.

Medicinal Cannabis for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Survey of Perspectives, Experiences, and Current Use in Australian Patients.

Background: Medicinal cannabis (MC) is an increasingly utilized treatment option for various refractory diseases. While robust clinical evidence supporting MC efficacy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is lacking, many IBD patients report using MC to obtain symptomatic relief. Understanding this use and associated outcomes may help inform future clinical trials.

Norepinephrine stabilizes translation-dependent, homosynaptic long-term potentiation through mechanisms requiring the cAMP sensor Epac, mTOR and MAPK.

Neuromodulators regulate higher-order cognitive processes including learning and memory through modulation of synaptic transmission and plasticity. Norepinephrine is a neuromodulator that is secreted throughout the brain in response to novelty or increased arousal, which alters neural circuits by increasing the modifiability of CNS synapses. Norepinephrine activates metabotropic receptors, initiating complex intracellular signalling cascades that can promote enduring changes in synaptic strength including long-term potentiation (LTP).

Magnetic resonance imaging of Ménière's disease: early clinical experience in a UK centre.

Background: Recent developments in magnetic resonance imaging have enabled demonstration of endolymphatic hydrops, and the clinical application of these imaging studies in Ménière's disease is being explored.

Objective: To evaluate our centre's experience to date of hydrops magnetic resonance imaging in patients with episodic vertigo.

Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging was performed using a high-resolution three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence on a 3 Tesla scanner at 4 hours following double-dose gadolinium administration.

The relationship between environmental sources and the susceptibility of Acanthamoeba keratitis in the United Kingdom.

Purpose: To determine whether Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) patients have higher rates of Acanthamoeba and free-living amoeba (FLA) colonising domestic sinks than control contact lens (CL) wearers, and whether these isolates are genetically similar to the corneal isolates from their CL associated AK.

Methods: 129 AK patients from Moorefield Eye Hospital, London and 64 control CL wearers from the Institute of Optometry were included in this study. The participants self-collected home kitchen and bathroom samples from tap-spouts, overflows and drains using an instructional kit.

Building Pre-Professional Students' Interprofessional Skills and Confidence: A Population Health Approach.

Background: Many graduates of health science programs lack the skills and confidence to incorporate multiple providers' perspectives when designing coordinated care outcomes.

Method: This longitudinal cross-sectional study used the Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) to study prelicensure nursing students' perceptions of interprofessional (IP) work. Between 2015 and 2018, IPAS scores and anecdotal data were collected for four consecutive semesters.

Pancreatic grade 3 neuroendocrine tumors behave similarly to neuroendocrine carcinomas following resection: a multi-center, international appraisal of the WHO 2010 and WHO 2017 staging schema for pancreatic neuroendocrine lesions.

Background: In 2017, the WHO updated their 2010 classification of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, introducing a well-differentiated, highly proliferative grade 3 tumor, distinct from neuroendocrine carcinomas. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance of this update in a large cohort of resected tumors.

Methods: Using a multicenter, international dataset of patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine lesions, patients were classified both according to the WHO 2010 and 2017 schema.

Australian consensus statements for the regulation, production and use of faecal microbiota transplantation in clinical practice.

Objective: Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has proved to be an extremely effective treatment for recurrent infection, and there is interest in its potential application in other gastrointestinal and systemic diseases. However, the recent death and episode of septicaemia following FMT highlights the need for further appraisal and guidelines on donor evaluation, production standards, treatment facilities and acceptable clinical indications.

Design: For these consensus statements, a 24-member multidisciplinary working group voted online and then convened in-person, using a modified Delphi approach to formulate and refine a series of recommendations based on best evidence and expert opinion.

Human Herpesvirus 6 Detection in Alzheimer's Disease Cases and Controls across Multiple Cohorts.

The interplay between viral infection and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has long been an area of interest, but proving causality has been elusive. Several recent studies have renewed the debate concerning the role of herpesviruses, and human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) in particular, in AD. We screened for HHV-6 detection across three independent AD brain repositories using (1) RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) datasets and (2) DNA samples extracted from AD and non-AD control brains.

Student Pharmacists' Perspectives on Service-Learning Experiences in Free Clinics.

To explore student pharmacists' perspectives on the value of pharmacy-related service-learning experiences focused on caring for underserved populations. Student pharmacists were required to complete a three-hour volunteer experience at a free clinic in western Pennsylvania. Reflective essays from all second- and third-year student pharmacists who participated in the required service-learning experience were deidentified.

Mapping Levels of Palliative Care Development in 198 Countries: The Situation in 2017.

Context: Palliative care is gaining ground globally and is endorsed in high-level policy commitments, but service provision, supporting policies, education, and funding are incommensurate with rapidly growing needs.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe current levels of global palliative care development and report on changes since 2006.

Methods: An online survey of experts in 198 countries generated 2017 data on 10 indicators of palliative care provision, fitted to six categories of development.

Men at risk of gonococcal urethritis: a case-control study in a Darwin sexual health clinic.

Background: Male urethritis is primary sexually transmitted. Northern Territory (NT) has the highest rates of gonococcal infection in Australia and local guidelines recommend empiric treatment with azithromycin and ceftriaxone for all men presenting with urethritis. As gonococcal drug resistance is a growing concern, this study aims to improve empiric use of ceftriaxone through examining local patterns of male urethritis, comparing cases of gonococcal urethritis (GU) to controls with non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU).
