Consent and violence amongst men in the context of sexualised drug use: A systematic scoping review.

Sexualised drug use (SDU) is a highly prevalent phenomenon of increasing public health significance in communities of men who have sex with men (MSM). This prospectively registered PRISMA-ScR-adherent systematic scoping review examines the current state of knowledge surrounding violence amongst MSM in the context of SDU. A broad search was conducted across four databases, with no restrictions.

Fluorescence Analysis of Quinine in Commercial Tonic Waters.

Quinine is known for treating malaria, muscle cramps, and, more recently, has been used as an additive in tonic water due to its bitter taste. However, it was shown that excessive consumption of quinine can have severe side effects on health. In this work, we utilized fluorescence spectroscopy to measure the concentration of quinine in commercial tonic water samples.

Methods: A convergent, mixed methods process evaluation of an exploratory randomised trial of a one-month general practice-based link worker intervention targeting adults with multimorbidity in deprived areas.

The Ethylene Diamine Tetra-acetic Acid (EDTA) titration test is widely used for determining cement content, but its reliability is influenced by the hydration process of cement, which is affected by factors such as water content and hydration time. Despite their importance, these factors have received limited attention in existing research. This study explores the relationships between the volume of titrant required for stabilization, cement content, water content, and hydration time.

Pre-drinking is Associated with Possible Alcohol Dependence in UK Trans and Non-Binary Communities.

In an analytical sample of 462 UK-based trans and non-binary respondents to a co-produced survey, 23.2% reported drinking with a higher risk of dependence (AUDIT scores ≥16), and 26.2% reported that they mostly drank at home alone.

Optimizing and Validating Systemic DNA Damage Response Profiling to Predict Neoadjuvant Chemoradiation Response in Rectal Cancer.

Purpose: This study aimed to stratify patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) based on their response to neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy (nCRT) using DNA damage response (DDR)-related proteins measured in peripheral blood monocytes (PBMCs). We optimized and validated an innovative assay to quantify these proteins, providing a predictive framework for nCRT response.

FAK inhibitors are in combinatorial clinical testing with agents that prevent Ras-Raf-MAPK pathway activation in various cancers. This study suggests that nuclear FAK limits ERK/MAPK activation in supporting HGSOC cell survival to cisplatin stress. Overall, it is likely that targets of FAK-mediated survival signaling may be tumor type- and context-dependent.

Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging Responses to Nonhypoxic Hypobaric Decompression.

Introduction: The pathophysiological basis of neurological decompression sickness and the association between cerebral subcortical white matter (WM) change and nonhypoxic hypobaria remain poorly understood. Recent study of altitude decompression sickness risk evaluated acute WM responses to intensive hypobaric exposure using brain magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods: Six healthy men (20 to 50 yr) completed 6 h of hyperoxic hypobaria during three same-day altitude chamber decompressions to pressure altitudes ≥ 22,000 ft (6706 m).

Background: Ketamine's popularity has surged globally in the past decade, especially among young men. Emergency department visits due to its toxicity remain relatively rare, often linked to co-occurring use of other substances.

Aims: Using data from the Global Drug Survey (GDS) 2018, this study explored the correlates associated with lifetime and past-year ketamine use, and estimated the socio-demographic characteristics, usage patterns and experiences of respondents seeking emergency medical treatment (EMT) after ketamine use.

Prevalence of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and ALMS1 Variant in Sphynx Cats in New Zealand.

Recently, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Sphynx cats has been associated with a variant in the gene encoding Alström syndrome protein 1 (ALMS1). The primary aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of HCM in Sphynx cats in New Zealand, and to assess the association between HCM and the ALMS1 variant in this population. In this prospective study, 55 apparently healthy Sphynx cats from registered Sphynx breeders and pet owners in New Zealand were screened by a cardiologist.

Longitudinal assessment of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Background: The proportion of cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) that lose systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve (SAM) in the long term is unknown.

Hypothesis/objectives: Cats with HCM will lose SAM in the long term. Loss of SAM will be associated with greater age, longer scan-interval, and altered left ventricular (LV) dimensions.

A Comprehensive Review of Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Parameters and Applications in Neurologic and Psychiatric Disorders.

Objectives: Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) is gaining increased interest as a potential therapeutic modality for a range of neuropsychiatric diseases. Current neuromodulation modalities often require a choice between high spatial fidelity or invasiveness. LIFU is unique in this regard because it provides high spatial acuity of both superficial and deep neural structures while remaining noninvasive.

Brain and Lung Biomarker Responses to Hyperoxic Hypobaric Decompression.

Biomarker responses to intensive decompression indicate systemic proinflammatory responses and possible neurological stress. To further investigate responses, 12 additional brain and lung biomarkers were assayed. A total of 15 healthy men (20 to 50 yr) undertook consecutive same-day ascents to 25,000 ft (7620 m), following denitrogenation, breathing 100% oxygen.

Development and evaluation of an artificial intelligence-based workflow for the prioritization of patient portal messages.

Objectives: Accelerating demand for patient messaging has impacted the practice of many providers. Messages are not recommended for urgent medical issues, but some do require rapid attention. This presents an opportunity for artificial intelligence (AI) methods to prioritize review of messages.

Background: Intermediaries are health-related workers who facilitate connections to local physical activities. Intermediaries deliver interventions by receiving referrals, conducting assessments, connecting referred individuals to activities and/or services in the community, and following up with them over time. However, it is unclear whether individuals who are referred to physical activities by an intermediary improve their physical activity levels, and what their perspectives and experiences are of participating in this intervention.
