Unlabelled: Periodontal debridement (PD) remains a gold standard for the treatment of inflammatory periodontitis.
Background/purpose: The evidence base regarding the causal relationship between oral biofilm and the host inflammatory response to the etiology of periodontal disease has substantially increased over the years. What has not changed significantly during that time is the conservative manner in which the disease can be treated with periodontal debridement (PD).
The focus of this review on periodontal self-care will be based primarily on the results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Based on the evidence gleaned from systematic reviews, it is notable that most authors of these reviews commented on the relatively small number of trials that could pass the quality-assessment inclusion in the systematic review. Interproximal devices, namely interproximal brushes, are more effective for reducing interproximal plaque and gingivitis than are flossing or brushing alone.

Orthodontic removable appliance wearers have a higher risk of oral infections that are caused by the formation of bacterial and fungal biofilms on the appliance surface. Here, we present the synthetic route for an antibacterial and antifungal organically-modified silicate (ORMOSIL) that has multiple methacryloloxy functionalities attached to a siloxane backbone (quaternary ammonium methacryloxy silicate, or QAMS).

William Gies's vision in 1926 of the professionalization of dental educators was key to the professionalization of dental education. His focus on the need to develop these teachers as both instructors and researchers established the model by which a "dental educator" became a distinct professional, different from a dentist who happens to teach.

The researchers evaluated a powered brush/irrigating device (HydraBrush Oral Health System; OHS) for its safety and ability to deliver a solution to the bottom of 5-6 mm pockets, compared to rinsing alone with a solution following brushing with a powered toothbrush (Sonicare Elite 7800; SE). An evaluation technique to measure the quantity and quality of solution able to enter the pocket was also introduced in this project.
