Background: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant public health concern, and there is a lack of universal, evidence-based primary prevention interventions that extend beyond a focus solely on children. Parents remain a consistently underutilized target for primary prevention efforts aimed at mitigating CSA despite their unique relationship and close proximity to their children. CSA risk is not confined to any specific demographic, and its effects on affected children are well-documented, significantly impacting numerous dimensions of their wellbeing.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 patients hospitalized face an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) even with standard anticoagulant treatment, necessitating a revised protocol for dosage adjustments.
  • The study examined the effectiveness of a dynamic anticoagulation dosing guideline based on D-dimer levels, aiming to improve patient outcomes by allowing dose adjustments based on individual VTE risk.
  • Results indicated that patients whose anticoagulation was adjusted had a higher in-hospital survival rate (80.2%) compared to those on fixed doses (51.3%), though there was an increased rate of bleeding events in the adjusted group.

Background: Hazardous drugs are inherently toxic and present a potential occupational exposure risk to nurses and midwives. Hazardous drugs require special handling to minimise the risk of exposure and adverse health effects. Although the use of hazardous drugs in oncology services is well recognised, they are also used in other healthcare areas where nurses and midwives may be unaware there is a risk.

Background: Occupational exposure of healthcare workers to hazardous medications can be potentially harmful. Hazardous medications can be carcinogenic, developmentally toxic, reproductively toxic, genotoxic and/or toxic to organs at low doses. These hazardous medications can be used in many healthcare settings, but published research of occupational exposure has focused almost exclusively on cancer services.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare cardiovascular risks in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) receiving tofacitinib versus tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi).
  • It involved patients aged 50 and over with CV risk factors, evaluating rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and various individual cardiovascular outcomes.
  • The results indicated that while the overall risk of composite CV events was similar for both treatments, tofacitinib 10 mg was linked to a higher risk of certain outcomes compared to TNFi, particularly venous thromboembolism (VTE).

The contemporary preoccupation with lesbian's potential obsolescence relies on implicit assumptions about the (ir)relevance of lesbian feminism to younger generations. In this article, we use the metaphor of "generation loss" to conceptualize the Gordian knot of affective and ideological ties that lie beneath this preoccupation. Contrary to the narrative of generation loss, we show how young people have begun to take up and share lesbian feminist concepts on social media platforms like TikTok.

Objective: The ORAL Surveillance trial found a dose-dependent increase in venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism (PE) events with tofacitinib versus tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi). We aimed to assess VTE incidence over time and explore risk factors of VTE, including disease activity, in ORAL Surveillance.

Methods: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) aged 50 years or older with at least one additional cardiovascular risk factor received tofacitinib 5 or 10 mg twice daily (BID) or TNFi.

Introduction: Many people living with dementia experience sleep disturbance and there are no known effective treatments. Non-pharmacological treatment options should be the first-line sleep management. For family carers, relatives' sleep disturbance leads to interruption of their sleep, low mood and breakdown of care.

Parents and preschool teachers play a key role in shaping children's dietary behaviors. Knowledge of nutrition and healthy dietary choices is a key component to improve dietary habits and reduce the prevalence of obesity and associated co-morbidities. Using valid and reliable instruments is necessary for accurate assessment of knowledge to tailor interventions and measure effectiveness specific to the population of interest.

Despite the prevalence of exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) among children involved with the child welfare system (CWS), trauma screening is not yet a common practice. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of embedding a formal trauma screening process in statewide multidisciplinary evaluations for CWS-involved youth. A retrospective record review was conducted with two random samples of cases reflecting both pre- and postimplementation of formal screening procedures (n = 70 preimplementation, n = 100 postimplementation).

A web-based clinical simulation program, known as FIRSTACT (Feedback Incorporating Review and Simulation Techniques to Act on Clinical Trends), was designed to increase the efficacy of clinicians' actions in the recognition and immediate response to a patient's deterioration. This study, which was nested in a larger mixed method project, used ten focus groups ( = 65) of graduate, enrolled, registered nurses, associate nurse unit managers, and general managers/educators/coordinators from four different institutions to investigate whether nurses felt their practice was influenced by participating in either a face-to-face or web-based simulation educational programme about patient deterioration. The results indicate that individuals who were less "tech-savvy" appreciated the flexibility of web-based learning, which increased their confidence.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive, autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that affects nearly one million Americans. Despite the existence of immunomodulatory therapies to slow physical and cognitive disability progression, interventions to ameliorate common symptoms of MS, including fatigue and pain, remain limited. Poor understanding of risk factors for these symptoms may contribute to treatment challenges.

This article aims to draw attention to increasing genericism in nurse education in the United Kingdom, which sees less specialist mental health education for mental health nursing students and offers opposition to such direction. In 2018, the Nursing and Midwifery Council produced the 'Future Nurse' standards which directed changes to pre-registration nurse education. This led to dissatisfaction from many mental health nurses, specifically regarding reduced mental health content for students studying mental health nursing.
