Using Mental Health First Aid Training to Improve the Mental Health Literacy of Physiotherapy Students.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training has been proven to improve the literacy of trainees and reduce the stigma they may have toward individuals with mental health problems in the general population. Our research was designed to determine whether MHFA training had an impact on physiotherapy students' attitudes toward psychiatry and mental illness, their confidence to engage with people with mental health problems, and their preparedness for practice. Final-year students from one university who had finished MHFA training completed a questionnaire that included the Attitudes Toward Psychiatry-30 and questions about their perceived confidence in working with people with mental illness and preparedness for practice.

First recurrence of small cell lung cancer presenting as subacute monoarticular arthritis.

We describe a case of recurrent small cell lung cancer presenting as an acute monoarticular arthritis. This patient had recently undergone comprehensive review and surveillance imaging under a local oncology unit, 18 months after undergoing chemoradiotherapy for limited disease small cell lung cancer. He had presented to the emergency department on multiple occasions and been managed as an outpatient for a provisional diagnosis of spontaneous haemarthrosis in the setting of rivaroxaban therapy.

Anticoagulation in the obese patient with COVID-19-associated venous thromboembolism.

A 61-year-old obese man who had recently tested positive for COVID-19 presented to the emergency department following an unwitnessed collapse, with a brief period of unresponsiveness. CT pulmonary angiography confirmed the presence of extensive bilateral pulmonary embolism despite the patient reporting full compliance with long-term dabigatran. The patient was initially anticoagulated with low-molecular-weight heparin and was treated with non-invasive ventilation and dexamethasone for COVID-19 pneumonia.

Background: Student motivation to learn has been undervalued to date though has been identified as an area influencing student success and retention at university. The transition into university has been highlighted as a key period affecting student outcomes as well as well-being. Early identification of those students at risk may assist the transition for many students moving into higher education.

Objectives: Headache is the most common type of pain reported by people with schizophrenia. This study aimed to establish prevalence, characteristics and management of these headaches.

Methods: One hundred participants with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder completed a reliable and valid headache questionnaire.

Physiotherapy Students' Attitudes toward Psychiatry and Mental Health: A Cross-Sectional Study.

A cross-sectional exploration of Notre Dame Australia physiotherapy students' attitudes toward psychiatry and mental illness, students' perceptions regarding preparation in this area for general clinical practice, and a cross-sectional investigation of current mental health-and psychiatry-related content in physiotherapy curricula across Australia and New Zealand. A questionnaire including demographic details, level of exposure to mental illness, and the Attitudes Toward Psychiatry-30 items (ATP-30) was completed by pre-clinical and clinically experienced physiotherapy students from the University of Notre Dame Australia. Students with clinical experience were asked additional questions about preparedness for practice.

To describe a cross-sectional exploration of attitudes of physiotherapists in general practice in Western Australia toward psychiatry and mental illness, how often they treat people with mental illness, their perceptions of how well their undergraduate education prepared them to work with these people, and their opinions about what further education would enable them to provide best-practice care. A questionnaire that included questions about participants' demographic information, personal experiences with mental illness, the Attitudes to Psychiatry (ATP-30), and open-ended questions about participants' preparedness to work with people with mental illness was distributed through 110 email contacts to physiotherapy departments in Western Australia. A total of 75 completed questionnaires contributed to the findings; 11 returned questionnaires were incomplete and were not included in the data analysis.

Copy number analysis by low coverage whole genome sequencing using ultra low-input DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tumor tissue.

Unlocking clinically translatable genomic information, including copy number alterations (CNA), from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue is challenging due to low yields and degraded DNA. We describe a robust, cost-effective low-coverage whole genome sequencing (LC WGS) method for CNA detection using 5 ng of FFPE-derived DNA. CN profiles using 100 ng or 5 ng input DNA were highly concordant and comparable with molecular inversion probe (MIP) array profiles.

The aim of this Irish study was to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on perception of medical attire. The study was carried out in two centres: a tertiary referral centre (Beaumont Hospital) and a district hospital (MRH, Portlaoise).

Are there associations among physical activity, fatigue, sleep quality and pain in people with mental illness? A pilot study.

Good mental health is imperative to well-being. Symptoms of fatigue, chronic pain and poor sleep are common in people with mental illness and contribute to substantial loss of functioning. Physical exercise interventions have shown to decrease these symptoms in a range of populations; however, their possible association with physical activity related to day-to-day functioning have not been explored in people hospitalized with severe mental illness.

Venous thromboembolism risk and prophylaxis in the acute hospital care setting: the Irish results of the ENDORSE study.

ENDORSE (Epidemiologic International Day for the Evaluation of Patients at Risk for Venous Thromboembolism in the Acute Hospital Care Setting), is a multinational, cross-sectional survey of venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk prevalence and effective prophylaxis in the acute hospital care setting. Three Irish hospitals enrolled in the study. The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) guidelines were employed to evaluate VTE risk and prophylaxis.

Pacifying the open abdomen with concomitant intestinal fistula: a novel approach.

The management of the open abdomen, particularly when complicated by the presence of intestinal fistula, remains a significant challenge of modern trauma care. Although several approaches have been proposed, these varied and complex cases defy the application of a universal approach to local therapy. Ultimately, abdominal closure is desired but is not always possible.

Management of a nontraumatic extracranial internal carotid aneurysm with external carotid transposition.

Primary aneurysms of the extracranial internal carotid artery are exceptionally rare, with only a very few reports in the medical literature that are not related to known connective tissue disease or antecedent trauma. The natural history of these entities has not been precisely defined. Nevertheless, the embolic risk that an aneurysm at this location represents mandates prompt intervention when identified.

Rare cerebellar metastases from oesophageal carcinoma.

Background: Metastatic oesophageal carcinoma to the brain is an uncommon diagnosis that may cause abnormal neurological findings.

Aims: The case of a 56-year-old man who presented with brain secondaries as an initial manifestation of carcinoma of oesophagus is presented and the unique characteristics highlighted.

Results: Patient survival was for 12 months after initial presentation and treatment.

Abdominoperineal resection: how is it done and what are the results?

Abdominoperineal resection (APR) for many years was the treatment of choice for most patients with rectal cancer. Recent advances in surgical technique and other treatment modalities have led to a marked increase in the rate of sphincter-sparing operations, with a concomitant decrease in APR. However, it is still necessary in selected patients, especially those with very distal tumors or poor sphincter function.
