Method: This is a multicenter retrospective study evaluating 30-day and 90-day surgery-related outcomes of morbidly obese patients (those with BMI > 40kg/m) undergoing robotic-assisted, laparoscopic, and vaginal hysterectomy.

Italy has traditionally been considered one of the cradles of European donkey breeding, and despite a considerable loss of biodiversity, today still counts nine autochthonous populations.

Predicting feed efficiency of Angus steers using the gastrointestinal microbiome.

Microbial composition of the gastrointestinal tracts is an important factor affecting the variation in feed efficiency in ruminants. Several studies have investigated the composition of the ruminal and fecal microbiotas, as well as their impacts on feed efficiency and digestion. In addition, next-generation DNA sequencing techniques have allowed us to gain a better understanding of such microbiomes.

Major Abdominal Surgery for Pediatric Crohn's Disease in the Anti-TNF Era: 10-Year Analysis of Data From the IBD Registry of Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

Background: The natural history of Crohn's disease (CD) can result in complications requiring surgery. Pediatric data are scarce about major abdominal surgery. The IBD Registry from the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition has been active since 2008 and collects data from major pediatric IBD centers in Italy.

Investigation of phenotypic, genetic and genomic background of Milk spectra in Sarda dairy sheep.

Aim of this study was to analyse the genetic background of milk Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra in dairy sheep. Individual milk FTIR spectra, with 1060 wavenumbers each, were available for 793 adult Sarda breed ewes genotyped at 45,813 SNP. The absorbance values of each wavenumber was analysed using a linear mixed model that included dim class, parity and lambing month as fixed effects and flock-test date and animal as random effects.

Multimodal astrocyte-neuron communications govern brain circuitry assembly and function. For example, through rapid glutamate release, astrocytes can control excitability, plasticity and synchronous activity of synaptic networks, while also contributing to their dysregulation in neuropsychiatric conditions. For astrocytes to communicate through fast focal glutamate release, they should possess an apparatus for Ca-dependent exocytosis similar to neurons.

Disruption of this process contributes instead to the emergence of pathological traits which are common in addiction and depression. What Has Changed over Years on Complementary Feeding in Italy: An Update.

Current practice regarding complementary feeding (CF) is influenced by socio-cultural background. Our group already investigated the Italian approach to CF in the years 2015-2017. Our aim was to update those data by finding out: if the habits have changed nationwide, how the trends changed in each area, and if the differences between regions still exist.

Parental behaviors secure the well-being of newborns and concomitantly limit negative affective states in adults, which emerge when coping with neonatal distress becomes challenging. Whether negative-affect-related neuronal circuits orchestrate parental actions is unknown. Here, we identify parental signatures in lateral habenula neurons receiving bed nucleus of stria terminalis innervation (LHb).

Astrocytes mediate long-lasting synaptic regulation of ventral tegmental area dopamine neurons.

The plasticity of glutamatergic transmission in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) represents a fundamental mechanism in the modulation of dopamine neuron burst firing and phasic dopamine release at target regions. These processes encode basic behavioral responses, including locomotor activity, learning and motivated behaviors. Here we describe a hitherto unidentified mechanism of long-term synaptic plasticity in mouse VTA.

Relationship between inbreeding and milk production traits in two Italian dairy sheep breeds.

The effects of inbreeding in livestock species breeds have been well documented and they have a negative impact on profitability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of inbreeding in Sarda (SAR, n = 785) and Valle del Belice (VdB, n = 473) dairy sheep breeds and their impact on milk production traits. Two inbreeding coefficients (F) were estimated: using pedigree (F ), or runs of homozygosity (ROH; F ) at different minimum ROH lengths and different ROH classes.

Educating the cancer patient about the immunotherapy toxicity: a descriptive observational study.

Background: Immunotherapy can cause immune-related adverse events. Recognizing and communicating these symptoms is important for the patient to allow nurses to manage them promptly, avoiding complications or interruptions in therapy.

Aim: We conducted an observational study with the objective of creating a readable tool to be shared with patients to provide information on immune-related adverse events and provide clinical guidance to prevent and manage symptoms.

Efficacy of High-Ozonide Oil in Prevention of Cancer Relapses Mechanisms and Clinical Evidence.

Background: Cancer tissue is characterized by low oxygen availability triggering neo angiogenesis and metastatisation. Accordingly, oxidation is a possible strategy for counteracting cancer progression and relapses. Previous studies used ozone gas, administered by invasive methods, both in experimental animals and clinical studies, transiently decreasing cancer growth.

Synaptic inhibition in the lateral habenula shapes reward anticipation.

The lateral habenula (LHb) supports learning processes enabling the prediction of upcoming rewards. While reward-related stimuli decrease the activity of LHb neurons, whether this anchors on synaptic inhibition to guide reward-driven behaviors remains poorly understood. Here, we combine in vivo two-photon calcium imaging with Pavlovian conditioning in mice and report that anticipatory licking emerges along with decreases in cue-evoked calcium signals in individual LHb neurons.

Throughout life, individuals experience a vast array of positive and aversive events that trigger adaptive behavioural responses. These events are often unpredicted and engage actions that are likely anchored on innate behavioural programs expressed by each individual member of virtually all animal species. In a second step, environmental cues, that are initially neutral, acquire value through the association with external sensory stimuli, and become instrumental to predict upcoming positive or negative events.

N-Acylethanolamine Acid Amidase Inhibition Potentiates Morphine Analgesia and Delays the Development of Tolerance.

Opioids are essential drugs for pain management, although long-term use is accompanied by tolerance, necessitating dose escalation, and dependence. Pharmacological treatments that enhance opioid analgesic effects and/or attenuate the development of tolerance (with a desirable opioid-sparing effect in treating pain) are actively sought. Among them, N-palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), an endogenous lipid neuromodulator with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, was shown to exert anti-hyperalgesic effects and to delay the emergence of morphine tolerance.

Complementary Feeding in Italy: From Tradition to Innovation.

Complementary feeding (CF) is a pivotal phase of the individual's growth, during which children develops their future dietary habits. To date, only few studies investigated and compared weaning modalities between different geographical areas. The aim of this article is to describe the current Italian practice for CF in healthy term infants among different areas (North, Center, South) of Italy.

Simulated Microgravity Effects on Human Adenocarcinoma Alveolar Epithelial Cells: Characterization of Morphological, Functional, and Epigenetic Parameters.

Background: In space, the reduction or loss of the gravity vector greatly affects the interaction between cells. Since the beginning of the space age, microgravity has been identified as an informative tool in biomedicine, including cancer research. The A549 cell line is a hypotriploid human alveolar basal epithelial cell line widely used as a model for lung adenocarcinoma.

Neuronal adaptations in the lateral habenula during drug withdrawal: Preclinical evidence for addiction therapy.

The epithalamic lateral habenula (LHb) regulates monoaminergic systems and contributes to the expression of both appetitive and aversive behaviours. Over the past years, the LHb has emerged as a vulnerable brain structure in mental illnesses including addiction. Behavioural and functional evidence in humans and rodents provide substantial support for a role of LHb in the negative affective symptoms emerging during withdrawal from addictive substances.

Prenatal THC Does Not Affect Female Mesolimbic Dopaminergic System in Preadolescent Rats.

Cannabis use among pregnant women is increasing worldwide along with permissive sociocultural attitudes toward it. Prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE), however, is associated with adverse outcome among offspring, ranging from reduced birth weight to child psychopathology. We have previously shown that male rat offspring prenatally exposed to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a rat model of PCE, exhibit extensive molecular, cellular, and synaptic changes in dopamine neurons of the ventral tegmental area (VTA), resulting in a susceptible mesolimbic dopamine system associated with a psychotic-like endophenotype.

Stress undermines reward-guided cognitive performance through synaptic depression in the lateral habenula.

Weighing alternatives during reward pursuit is a vital cognitive computation that, when disrupted by stress, yields aspects of neuropsychiatric disorders. To examine the neural mechanisms underlying these phenomena, we employed a behavioral task in which mice were confronted by a reward and its omission (i.e.
