Dementia represents a significant health issue, afflicting both patients and their families. To assess the global trends in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias in the elderly population, the Global Burden of Disease Study (1999-2019) was used. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was estimated using linear regression.

Steroidogenesis is an important biological process for gonadal differentiation and development. In mammals, 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 7 (HSD3B7) could convert 3β-hydroxy of 7α-hydroxycholesterol into a ketone and form 7α-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one, which may affect steroidogenesis. However, in fish, the study of Hsd3b7 is still lacking.

Study on fish sex differentiation is important both from academic and practical aspects. Foxl2 and Dmrt1 are important transcription factors that should be involved in fish gonadal differentiation, but there is still no direct evidence to clarify their protein functions. Olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, an important mariculture fish in China, Japan, and Korea, shows sex-dimorphic growth.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the international normalized ratio (INR) affects mortality rates in patients with cirrhosis and advanced fibrosis, finding a correlation between higher INR levels and increased risk of death.
  • Over 3,400 patients were analyzed, revealing a 90-day LT-free mortality rate of 16.7% for cirrhosis patients and 7.5% for those with advanced fibrosis.
  • Key findings show that an INR increase is strongly linked to short-term mortality risk, with critical INR thresholds identified as starting points for rapid increases in mortality.

Total bilirubin (TB) is a major prognosis predictor representing liver failure in patients with acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF). However, the cutoff value of TB for liver failure and whether the same cutoff could be applied in both cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients remain controversial. There is a need to obtain the quantitative correlation between TB and short-term mortality evidence-based methods, which is critical in establishing solid ACLF diagnostic criteria.
