Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates factors predicting the achievement of minimum clinically important differences (MCID) after water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT) for men with prostatic hyperplasia over a 36-month follow-up period.
  • Among 206 men assessed, 13.6% did not achieve MCID for their International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), with significant predictors being factors like the size of the median lobe and high preoperative IPSS scores.
  • The findings emphasize the importance of evaluating median lobe characteristics and symptom severity during preoperative assessments to improve treatment outcomes for patients.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in Chile and compare treatments and outcomes before and after the introduction in 2010 of the Explicit Health Guarantees (GES) for JIA, a national universal access program for diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Methods: The clinical records of 280 patients with JIA followed at a private tertiary academic health network between 2007 and 2018 were reviewed.

Results: Seventy percent of patients with JIA were female, mean age at diagnosis was 8.

Unlabelled: Denosumab is an antiresorptive agent widely used for treating osteoporosis. Atypical femur fractures, osteonecrosis of the jaw and hypocalcaemia are well-known possible adverse effects of this drug. We present, to our knowledge, the first case report in the English literature of clinically significant interstitial lung disease likely related to denosumab.

Article Synopsis
  • Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is the most common non-IgE mediated food allergy in infants, but diagnosing it currently relies on food challenges rather than non-invasive tests like the fecal occult blood test (FOBT).
  • A study was conducted comparing infants with suspected FPIAP to healthy infants using FOBT; results showed a high sensitivity (84%) for detecting FPIAP, but also a significant false positive rate (34% in controls).
  • Due to the high rate of abnormal FOBT results in healthy infants, the study concludes that routine use of FOBT for diagnosing FPIAP is not recommended despite its adequate sensitivity.

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been linked to increased incidence and morbidity of tuberculosis (TB). Chile has large variations in solar radiation (SR; a proxy of VD status) and high prevalence of VD deficiency in its southernmost regions with low SR. We investigated the correlation between regional SR and rates of TB incidence, admissions and deaths in Chile by reviewing national records on prospectively collected mandatory disease notifications, admissions and mortality between 2001 and 2011.

A patient with panhypopituitarism and visual field defects due to a Rathke's cleft cyst is presented. These cysts are commonly found in random pituitaries examined at necropsy, but rarely produce symptoms. Subtle endocrine deficiencies, however, may now be uncovered more frequently with modern diagnostic techniques.
