Selenium biotransformation by lactic acid bacteria during the preparation of Se-enriched yogurt was evaluated. The study focused on the distribution of selenium in the aqueous soluble protein fraction and the detection of selenoamino acids. Screening of selenium in Tris-buffer-urea soluble fraction was carried out by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis after pre-fractionating with asymmetric field flow fractionation using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry as the detector.

Molecularly imprinted polymers: an analytical tool for the determination of benzimidazole compounds in water samples.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for benzimidazole compounds have been synthesized by precipitation polymerization using thiabendazole (TBZ) as template, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB) as cross-linkers and a mixture of acetonitrile and toluene as porogen. The experiments carried out by molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) in cartridges demonstrated the imprint effect in both imprinted polymers. MIP-DVB enabled a much higher breakthrough volume than MIP-EDMA, and thus was selected for further experiments.

Molecularly imprinted capillary electrochromatography for selective determination of thiabendazole in citrus samples.

In this work, the suitability of the combination of molecular imprinting and capillary electrochromatography (MIP-CEC) to be used as powerful tool in environmental or food analysis has been for the first time studied and successfully demonstrated. A molecularly imprinted monolith (MIM) has been synthesised and evaluated as stationary phase for the selective determination of the fungicide thiabendazole (TBZ) in citrus samples by non-aqueous capillary electrochromatography. The influence of the mobile phase composition, the voltage of the power supply and the separation temperature on the recognition of TBZ by the imprinted polymer has been evaluated, and the imprint effect in the MIM was clearly demonstrated.

Analysis of zearalenone in cereal and Swine feed samples using an automated flow-through immunosensor.

The development of a sensitive flow-though immunosensor for the analysis of the mycotoxin zearalenone in cereal samples is described. The sensor was completely automated and was based on a direct competitive immunosorbent assay and fluorescence detection. The mycotoxin competes with a horseradish-peroxidase-labeled derivative for the binding sites of a rabbit polyclonal antibody.

Evaluation of maximal respiratory pressures in myasthenia gravis. Prognostic value.

We assess the prognosis of mild forms of myasthenia gravis (MG) by maximal respiratory pressures (MRP) and single fiber electromyography (SFEMG). Fifty MG patients (12 form I, 21 form IIa and 17 form IIb) are valued by MRP [maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP)] and SFEMG, and are followed-up clinically. We have found in form I patients developing form IIa and form IIa worsening to form IIb, MEP and MIP mean relative values significantly lower than the rest.

Prevalence and progression of mitochondrial diseases: a study of 50 patients.

We report 50 patients with various clinical phenotypes of mitochondrial disease studied over the past 10 years in a large urban area (Madrid Health Area 5). The effect of the presence of volatile organoselenium compounds on the determination of inorganic selenium by hydride generation.

As a result of microbiological activity it is possible to find dimethylselenium (DMSe) and dimethyldiselenium (DMDSe) in a wide type of environmental samples, such as soils, sediments, sewage sludges and plants where methylation can take place. Selenium determination by hydride-generation (HG) techniques requires its presence as Se(IV). Consequently, inorganic speciation by hydride generation techniques is done by first determining Se(IV) and then, after reduction of Se (VI) to Se(IV), the total selenium.

Assessment of the cross-reactivity and binding sites characterisation of a propazine-imprinted polymer using the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.

In this paper, the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm is used to model the interaction of several triazines (desethylatrazine, desisopropylatrazine, simazine, atrazine, propazine and prometryn) with a propazine-imprinted polymer and to explain the observed cross-reactivity. Different rebinding experiments (each herbicide alone or all together in a mixture) were carried out and the experimental binding isotherms were fitted to the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm. The fitting coefficients obtained (total number of binding sites, mean binding affinity and heterogeneity index) allowed the description of the kind of binding sites present in the imprinted polymer under study.
