Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the use of anesthesia for non-cardiac procedures (NCPs) in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) between 2014 and 2023.
  • Out of 16 LVAD patients, 9 underwent a total of 22 NCPs, primarily in the endoscopy unit, with sedation used in most cases and no intraoperative complications reported.
  • Postoperative complications occurred in 36.4% of procedures, mainly involving lower gastrointestinal bleeding, but overall, standard anesthesia practices were effective for LVAD patients during NCPs.

Background: Critical COVID-19 survivors are at risk of developing Post-intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and Chronic ICU-Related Pain (CIRP). We determined whether a specific care program improves the quality of life (QoL) of patients at risk of developing PICS and CIRP after COVID-19.

Methods: The PAIN-COVID trial was a parallel-group, single-centre, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial.

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately 50.8% of critically ill COVID-19 survivors reported new-onset pain after hospital discharge, with 38.5% experiencing clinically significant pain and a notable portion suffering from neuropathic pain.
  • Pain negatively impacted Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), with significant correlations found between pain intensity and HRQoL scores.
  • Mood disorders were also noted, with a small percentage of patients displaying anxiety and depression post-recovery, underscoring the multifaceted challenges faced by these survivors.

Background: Critically ill patients with COVID-19 are an especially susceptible population to develop post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) due to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients can suffer acute severe pain and may have long-term mental, cognitive, and functional health deterioration after discharge. However, few controlled trials are evaluating interventions for the prevention and treatment of PICS.

The covid-19 disease (coronavirus disease 2019) is a novel disease causing a world pandemic. Its presentation varies from an asymptomatic infection to a pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome. We present a case presenting initially as a covid-19 pneumonia together with a disseminated intravascular coagulopathy consisting of arterial and venous thrombosis in different locations and a shock requiring admission in the intensive care unit.

Objectives: Latest trials failed to confirm merits of nebulized amikacin for critically ill patients with nosocomial pneumonia. We studied various nebulized and IV antibiotic regimens in a porcine model of severe Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, resistant to amikacin, fosfomycin, and susceptible to meropenem.

Design: Prospective randomized animal study.
