Background: Focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been successfully used to treat musculoskeletal conditions, but ESWT stimulates nociceptors, causing pain deep in the tissue during treatment. The occurrence of pain during ESWT is a side effect, but it can help identify painful sites and assess minimum (MiTI) and maximum (MaTI) pain thresholds to ESWT pressure stimuli. This topic has received limited attention in literature.

Context: Taxing unhealthy foods and drinks is an essential measure against the double burden of malnutrition that affects every nation worldwide. In turn, subsidizing the consumption of healthy foods can also be a critical measure for changing the population's behavior and improving health indicators.

Objective: A systematic review was conducted of food subsidies and their potential impact on food purchases, consumption, overweight/obesity, and changes in body mass index (BMI).

Active wearable devices such as protective smart belts have been proposed to reduce hip impact in the event of a fall. This study primarily evaluated the feasibility and acceptance of a specific protective belt among selected patients identified as being at risk of falling who were admitted to an ICS Maugeri Neurorehabilitation Unit from September 2022 to April 2023. According to previous institutional observations, the device was worn between the 6th and 21st days of recovery.

The number of solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) is growing as a consequence of an increase in transplantations and longer survival; these patients, thus, frequently suffer various comorbidities and are subjected to the detrimental effects of immunosuppressive agents, which expose them to a higher risk of developing malignancies. These drugs also complicate the surgical treatment of neoplasms, as they can hinder wound healing, especially when associated with other unfavorable factors (e.g.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of the Gloreha Aria (R-Lead), a sensor-based rehabilitation tool, for improving upper limb function in post-stroke patients compared to traditional physiotherapy.
  • A total of 21 subacute hemiplegic patients were randomly assigned to either the sensor-based treatment group or the conventional control group, with both completing 30 rehabilitation sessions.
  • Results indicated improvements in upper limb motor function for both groups, with the Gloreha Aria showing promise in enhancing arm abilities without any adverse effects during the rehabilitation process.

Tongue abscesses are rare conditions that usually follow mucosal disruption due to mechanical trauma or foreign body impaction. They typically manifest abruptly as a rapidly growing, hard mass or swelling in the context of tongue muscles; the patient frequently complains of pain, difficulties in swallowing or speaking, and fever. Nonetheless, the features of its presentation, together with accurate clinical evaluation, blood tests, and appropriate imaging tests, are usually sufficient to easily discern a tongue abscess from a malignancy.

Background And Purpose: Parotid gland lymphoma (PGL) is a rare and challenging diagnosis. Different lymphomas can develop in the parotid gland, with the most common being the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, which originates directly from the glandular parenchyma. Other histologic subtypes arise from both intraglandular and extraglandular parotid lymph nodes.

Background: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) is growing in importance in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as the number of elderly comorbid patients increases.

Aim: To classify through the ICF framework a group of post-cardiac surgery (CS) and chronic heart failure (CHF) patients undergoing rehabilitation. Then, to compare the two groups and identify possible factors at admission that could affect ICF evaluations at discharge.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease in the elderly people, inducing pain and functional limitations. Clodronate (CLO) a first generation non-nitrogen containing bisphosphonate has been purposed as a treatment of OA, being effective on pain, inflammation, bone marrow oedema, osteophytosis and cartilage regeneration. Intra-muscular routes of CLO showed efficacy in the treatment of Knee OA (KOA) and erosive OA of the hand.

To date, little is known about the effects of motor rehabilitation in peripheral neuropathy (PN) patients with a history of recurrent falls (RFH). This study aimed to assess balance and the activities of daily living (ADLs) in elderly lower limb PN patients with and without RFH and to verify the effects of motor rehabilitation on balance and ADLs in these patients. We collected data from 64 lower limb PN patients, who underwent a conventional motor rehabilitation program: 35 patients had a history of recurrent falls, and 29 did not.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a highly prevalent disease affecting almost 10% of the world population; it is characterized by acute and chronic conditions. Diabetic patients have twenty-five times higher risk of going blind and developing cataracts early than the general population. Alpha-lipoic acid (LA) is a highly valuable natural antioxidant for the prevention and treatment of ophthalmic complications, such as diabetic keratopathy and retinopathy.

Background: Impairments in respiration, voice and speech are common in people with Parkinson's disease (PD).

Aims: To evaluate the prevalence of dysphonia, assessed by a specific acoustic evaluation and description of the voice by the speech therapist (GIRBAS), and its relation with lung function and oxygenation, in particular cough ability and during the night or exercise desaturation.

Methods: This is a posthoc analysis of a prospective cross-sectional observational study on PD patients collecting anthropometric and clinical data, comorbidities, PD severity, motor function and balance, respiratory function at rest, during exercise and at night, voice function with acoustic analysis and presence of speech disorders, in addition to the GIRBAS scale.

Teicoplanin (Teico) is an antimicrobial agent that spontaneously forms micelles in aqueous media. In this work, we characterized the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles formed by the interaction of Teico with Amphotericin B (AmB). Teico-AmB micelles structure spontaneously in aqueous media, with a particle size of 70-100 nm and a zeta potential of -28 mV.

Abstract: Orbital exenteration is a radical and disfiguring operation. It is still under debate the absence of correlation between the term describing the resulting orbital defect and the type of reconstruction. Authors' goal was to propose a consistent and uniform terminology for Orbital Exenteration surgery in anticipation of patients' tailored management.

Background: Shortening and rotational deformity of the lower limb (SRD) is a major complication of hip fracture surgery. It causes not only hip joint dysfunction but also functional impairments due to abnormal gait parameters, decreased gait velocity, and poor balance. Despite a number of previous studies, the effect of SRD on the postsurgical recovery of these patients is still not clear.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease with both degenerative and inflammatory characteristics, affecting the osteochondral unit with the involvement of cartilage, subchondral bone and periarticular tissues. OA can produce chronic pain with neuropathic and inflammatory characteristics, leading to an increased disability. OA is secondary to many predisposing factors where the inflammatory process plays a key role.

Background: To date little is known about factors affecting walking rehabilitation in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.

Objective: This prospective observational cohort study evaluated the walking distance covered in 6 minutes (6 MWD) before and after conventional rehabilitation and verified which among PD motor disorders was the most important determinant of walking distance in PD patients undergoing rehabilitation.

Methods: Data were collected from 55 PD patients, performing a conventional outpatient motor rehabilitation program.

Purpose: To evaluate perceived fatigue (PF) and neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) in patients with COPD and chronic respiratory failure (CRF) on long-term oxygen therapy (CRF-COPD group), and the relationships between PF, NMF, patient's characteristics, comparing severe patients with COPD to patients without CRF (COPD group).

Methods: This cross-sectional study compared 19 CRF-COPD patients with 10 COPD patients attending a rehabilitation program. PF was determined by Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), while dyspnea by the Barthel Dyspnea Index (BDI).
