Background: The success of crucial vector control efforts in Africa (eg, long-lasting insecticide-treated nets [ITNs] and indoor residual spraying) are threatened by widespread insecticide resistance and insufficient effect on outdoor mosquito biting. Studies have shown that ivermectin, used for the treatment of parasitic diseases, can kill malaria vectors that feed on the blood of treated people and thus might be an effective complementary vector control tool if administered widely to communities in malaria endemic regions. We aimed to test the safety of repeated, high-dose ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) and its efficacy for reducing malaria incidence among children when integrated with seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) delivery.

Malaria and HIV co-infection are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa causing significant drug interactions with co-treatment. We previously reported a 30%-70% reduction in exposure to the standard 3-day (6-dose) artemether-lumefantrine (AL) treatment for malaria when given with efavirenz-based HIV therapy, impacting malaria reinfection risk. We conducted a prospective, randomized study comparing the 3-day regimen to an extended 5-day (10-dose) regimen with pharmacokinetic sampling for artemether, dihydroartemisinin, lumefantrine, and desbutyl-lumefantrine (DBL) over 42 days.

Background: The gains made against malaria have stagnated since 2015, threatened further by increasing resistance to insecticides and antimalarials. Amphetamines and amphetamine-derivatives elevate neurotransmitter concentrations by competing with endogenous biogenic amines for reuptake. In addition, AMPHs have been shown to activate endocytosis of the dopamine transporter (DAT) which further elevates extracellular dopamine (DA). The impact of hemostatic agents on postoperative adhesion formation has not been well studied. We hypothesized that hemostatic agents would be a significant nidus for adhesion formation and that a resorbable barrier would effectively reduce adhesions to hemostatic agents. Background: Sodium hyaluronate and carboxymethylcellulose (HA-CMC) membrane is an effective barrier material for limiting postoperative adhesions, but can be difficult to apply in certain situations due to its physical properties. Adhesions remain a significant postoperative complication of abdominal surgery; however, recent evidence suggests that physical barriers may reduce their incidence. Although these adhesion prevention barriers are efficacious when used under aseptic conditions, little is known about their use in the presence of peritonitis, which is associated with an increased incidence of abdominal adhesions.
