This paper presents a study of the perpendicular gyroscope, which is formed of two orthogonal beams, a flexural plate and a gyroscope. Two sets of chiral-torsional boundary conditions are derived to analytically model the dynamic effects of the gyroscope while taking into account the broken symmetries of the system. The perpendicular junction causes the coupling of the compressional, flexural and torsional displacements in the system.

The concept of metamaterial recently emerged as a new frontier of scientific research, encompassing physics, materials science and engineering. In a broad sense, a metamaterial indicates an engineered material with exotic properties not found in nature, obtained by appropriate architecture either at macro-scale or at micro-/nano-scales. The architecture of metamaterials can be tailored to open unforeseen opportunities for mechanical and acoustic applications, as demonstrated by an impressive and increasing number of studies.

We consider the propagation of flexural and torsional waves in a square lattice of Euler-Bernoulli beams. The refraction and reflection of waves across interfaces between two dissimilar lattices is investigated. By carefully controlling the inertial and elastic properties of the lattice elements, we demonstrate that it is possible to induce negative refraction and other associated phenomena.

Using a sub-wavelength array of elongated beams attached to the plate, and combining the coupling effects of the longitudinal and flexural motion of these resonators, we create narrow transmission bands at the flexural resonances of the beams inside the wide frequency bandgap induced by their longitudinal resonance. The diameter of the beams becomes the tuning parameter for selection of the flexural leakage frequency, without affecting the main bandgap.

The graded metasurface reproduces a Luneburg lens capable of focusing plane SAWs to a point. The graded index profile is obtained by exploiting the dispersion properties of the metasurface arising from the well-known resonant coupling between the micropillars (0.

In this paper, we demonstrate a new approach to control flexural elastic waves in a structured chiral plate. The main focus is on creating one-way interfacial wave propagation at a given frequency by employing double resonators in a doubly periodic flexural system. The resonators consist of two beams attached to gyroscopic spinners, which act to couple flexural and rotational deformations, hence inducing chirality in the system.

We consider a periodic array of resonators, formed from Euler-Bernoulli beams, attached to the surface of an elastic half-space. Earlier studies of such systems have concentrated on compressional resonators. In this paper, we consider the effect of the flexural motion of the resonators, adapting a recently established asymptotic methodology that leads to an explicit scalar hyperbolic equation governing the propagation of Rayleigh-like waves.

An important topic within metasurfaces is the tailored rainbow trapping and selective spatial frequency separation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves using graded metasurfaces. This frequency dependent trapping and spatial frequency segregation has implications for energy concentrators and associated energy harvesting, sensing and wave filtering techniques.

Made of spatially graded vertical subwavelength resonators on an elastic substrate, the metawedge can either mode convert incident surface Rayleigh waves into bulk elastic shear waves or reflect the Rayleigh waves creating a "seismic rainbow" effect analogous to the optical rainbow for electromagnetic metasurfaces. Time-domain spectral element simulations demonstrate the broadband efficacy of the metawedge in mode conversion while an analytical model is developed to accurately describe and predict the seismic rainbow effect; allowing the metawedge to be designed without the need for extensive parametric studies and simulations.

We implement high-precision fabrication and experimental testing of an elastic invisibility cloak for flexural waves in a mechanical lattice. This is accompanied by verifications and numerical modelling performed through finite element simulations.

Despite the importance of RB waves in applications, their connections to trapped modes and the ubiquitous nature of diffraction gratings, there has been no investigation of whether such waves occur within elastic diffraction gratings for the in-plane vector elastic system. We identify boundary conditions that support such waves and numerical simulations confirm their presence.

Using the framework of transformation optics, this paper presents a detailed analysis of a non-singular square cloak for acoustic, out-of-plane shear elastic and electromagnetic waves. Analysis of wave propagation through the cloak is presented and accompanied by numerical illustrations. The efficacy of the regularized cloak is demonstrated and an objective numerical measure of the quality of the cloaking effect is provided.
