The ability to observe and interpret images and clinical information is essential for veterinarians in clinical practice. The purpose of this study is to determine the utility of a novel teaching method in veterinary medicine, the incorporation of art interpretation using the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), on students' observational and clinical interpretation skills when evaluating radiographs and patient charts. Students were asked to observe and interpret a set of radiographs and a patient chart, subsequently involved in art interpretation using VTS, and then asked to observe and interpret a different set of radiographs and a different patient chart.

Viruses are key drivers of microbial diversity, nutrient cycling, and co-evolution in ecosystems, yet their study is hindered due to challenges in culturing. Traditional gene-centric methods, which focus on a few hallmark genes like for capsids, miss much of the viral genome, leaving key viral proteins and functions undiscovered. Here, we introduce two powerful annotation-free metrics, V-score and V-score, designed to quantify the "virus-likeness" of protein families and genomes and create an open-access searchable database, 'V-Score-Search'.

Aging is associated with increased breast cancer risk and outcomes are worse for the oldest and youngest patients, regardless of subtype. It is not known how cells in the breast tumor microenvironment are impacted by age and how they might contribute to age-related disease pathology. Here, we discover age-associated differences in cell states and interactions in human estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) and triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) using new computational analyses of existing single-cell gene expression data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the accuracy of a fully automated AI solution for interpreting HER2 immunohistochemistry (IHC) in breast cancer, acknowledging the need for more reliable HER2 scoring due to the effectiveness of HER2-targeted therapies.
  • In a two-arm study involving 120 HER2 IHC whole-slide images and four surgical pathologists, the AI solution showed improved interobserver agreement and scoring accuracy compared to manual readings, particularly for distinguishing between HER2 0 and 1+ cases.
  • The results indicate that the AI tool can enhance the consistency and reproducibility of HER2 scoring, supporting pathologists in following ASCO/CAP guidelines more effectively.

: Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are associated with an increased length of stay and a higher risk of mortality in hospitalized patients. A lack of literature exists that evaluates the need to empirically cover patients for historic MDROs upon readmission. : A retrospective, single-center, cohort study was conducted to evaluate the impact of empiric MDRO antibiotic coverage in patients with a history of MDROs.

Background: Impaired kidney function is frequently observed in patients following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Our group has previously linked blood transfusion to acute declines in S-nitroso haemoglobin (SNO-Hb; the main regulator of tissue oxygen delivery), reductions in intraoperative renal blood flow, and postoperative kidney dysfunction. While not all CPB patients receive blood, kidney injury is still common.

Thirty percent of all mutations causing human disease generate mRNAs with premature termination codons (PTCs). Recognition and degradation of these PTC-containing mRNAs is carried out by the mechanism known as nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). Upf2 is a scaffold protein known to be a central component of the NMD surveillance pathway.

Differences between computer-assisted image analysis (CAI) algorithms may cause discrepancies in the identification of immunohistochemically stained immune biomarkers in biopsies of breast cancer patients. These discrepancies have implications for their association with disease outcome. This study aims to compare three CAI procedures (A, B and C) to measure positive marker areas in post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy biopsies of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and to explore the differences in their performance in determining the potential association with relapse in these patients.

Background: The negative impact of continued school closures during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic warrants the establishment of cost-effective strategies for surveillance and screening to safely reopen and monitor for potential in-school transmission. Here, we present a novel approach to increase the availability of repetitive and routine COVID-19 testing that may ultimately reduce the overall viral burden in the community.

Methods: We implemented a testing program using the SalivaClear࣪ pooled surveillance method that included students, faculty and staff from K-12 schools (student age range 5-18 years) and universities (student age range >18 years) across the country (Mirimus Clinical Labs, Brooklyn, NY).

It is uncommon for extramammary tumors to metastasize to the breast, and very few cases describing metastasis of primary uterine leiomyosarcoma to the breast have been reported. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman diagnosed with metastasis of uterine leiomyosarcoma to the breast diagnosed 10 years ago after hysterectomy. Ultrasonography, mammography, and cytology were used to establish a preliminary diagnosis that was confirmed upon examination of the excised tumor that show a rare soft tissue tumor composed of atypical spindle cells and increased proliferation rate.

Background: Adoptive natural killer (NK) cell transfer is being increasingly used as cancer treatment. However, clinical responses have so far been limited to patients with hematological malignancies. A potential limiting factor in patients with solid tumors is defective homing of the infused NK cells to the tumor site.

Over the past decade, human brain imaging investigations have reported altered regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the interictal phase of migraine. However, there have been conflicting findings across different investigations, making the use of perfusion imaging in migraine pathophysiology more difficult to define. These inconsistencies may reflect technical constraints with traditional perfusion imaging methods such as single-photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography.

The recording of event-related brain potentials triggered by a transient heat stimulus is used extensively to study nociception and diagnose lesions or dysfunctions of the nociceptive system in humans. However, these responses are related exclusively to the activation of a specific subclass of nociceptive afferents: quickly-adapting thermonociceptors. In fact, except if the activation of Aδ fibers is avoided or if A fibers are blocked, these responses specifically reflect activity triggered by the activation of Type 2 quickly-adapting A fiber mechano-heat nociceptors (AMH-2).
