Introduction: Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) remains a major complication of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT), affecting 30-70% of patients (representing 800 new patients per year in the UK). The risk is higher in patients undergoing unrelated allo-SCT. About 1 in 10 patients die as a result of GvHD or through complications of its treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • - Calcium silicate-based ceramics, especially wollastonite, are important in hard tissue engineering due to their compatibility and ability to promote biological activity, but they struggle with weak mechanical strength and bacterial growth.
  • - This study improves wollastonite by doping it with magnesium and copper using a sol-gel combustion technique, resulting in a material with enhanced mechanical stability and antibacterial properties.
  • - The new magnesium and copper co-doped wollastonite shows significant hydroxyapatite formation in biomineralization tests and effective antibacterial activity against various bacteria, making it a strong candidate for bone tissue engineering applications.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the second most common type of lymphoma (20% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas), derived from germinal centre (GC) B cells, and is characterised by its significant clinical, prognostic and biological heterogeneity, leading to complexity in management. Despite significant biological investigation and indisputable clinical progress since the advent of the immunotherapy era more than 20 years ago, much remains to be done to understand and cure this lymphoma. Today, FL is metaphorically a giant puzzle on the table with patches of sky, landscape and foliage clearly appearing.

Although broadly used, consolidative autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HCT) for relapsed/refractory (R/R) T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma (THRLBCL) has never been specifically investigated. Here, we have analyzed outcomes of auto-HCT for THRLBCL compared with diffuse large cell B-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (DLBCL). Eligible for this retrospective registry study were adult patients with R/R THRLBCL and DLBCL, respectively, who underwent a first auto-HCT in a salvage-sensitive disease status as assessed by positron emission tomography-computed tomography between 2016 and 2021 and were registered with the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation database.

Article Synopsis
  • Nocardiosis is a serious infection that can occur after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), and this study aimed to identify its risk factors and the impact of certain preventive treatments.
  • A review of 64 cases of nocardiosis and 128 matched controls showed that factors like tacrolimus use, low lymphocyte counts, male sex, recent corticosteroid use, and previous CMV infections increased the risk of developing this infection.
  • Conversely, patients on trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prophylaxis had a significantly lower risk of nocardiosis; however, those who did develop it had poorer survival rates compared to controls.

Selecting the most suitable alternative donor becomes challenging in severe aplastic anemia (SAA) when a matched sibling donor (MSD) is unavailable. We compared outcomes in patients with SAA undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT) from matched unrelated donors (MUD) (n = 1106), mismatched unrelated donors (MMUD) (n = 340), and haploidentical donors (Haplo) (n = 206) registered in the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation database (2012-2021). For Haplo SCT, only those receiving posttransplant cyclophosphamide for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis were included.

, or Group A , is an exclusively human pathogen that causes a wide variety of diseases ranging from mild throat and skin infections to severe invasive disease. The pathogenesis of infection has been extensively studied, but the pathophysiology, especially of the more severe infections, is still somewhat elusive. One key feature of is the expression of secreted, surface-associated, and intracellular enzymes that directly or indirectly affect both the innate and adaptive host immune systems.

Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN), either myelodysplastic neoplasms (t-MDS) or acute myeloid leukemias (t-AML), have a poor prognosis and allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) represents the only curative option. In this multicenter, registry-based study, we analyzed outcomes of 378 patients undergoing first allo-HCT between 2006-2017 for t-MN arising secondary to lymphoma treatment. Median age was 58 years at allo-HCT; 222 (59%) had a diagnosis of t-MDS and 156 (41%) of t-AML, respectively.

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a major bacterial pathogen responsible for both local and systemic infections in humans. The molecular mechanisms that contribute to disease heterogeneity remain poorly understood. Here we show that the transition from a local to a systemic GAS infection is paralleled by pathogen-driven alterations in IgG homeostasis.
