Genitourinary (GU) malignancies are common and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. In patients with localized GU cancers, surgical resection or definitive radiation remain the mainstays of treatment. Despite definitive treatment, many patients with high-risk localized disease experience recurrence.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzing 667 bone marrow harvests between 1999 and 2021 found a 13% contamination rate, primarily from common skin bacteria, with male donors showing significantly higher contamination rates (18% vs. 6.8% for females).
  • * The research is notable for being the largest single-center study to explore contamination rates and highlights male donor sex as a key factor, potentially due to differences in skin flora.

Partial separation of a peripheral population may lead to its divergence and, potentially, speciation due to genetic drift followed by selection and geographic isolation. This process may cause taxonomic uncertainty because reproductive isolation in allopatry cannot be verified directly. The two Nearctic allopatric species of magpies (Aves, Corvidae: ) serve as a good example of these problems.

Health care and religious organizations have a long history with one another. Chaplains' investments in the health and wellbeing of their local communities have extended beyond the hospital walls for longer than many chaplains may recognize. However, the published evidence suggests these efforts have been limited.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the empirical dietary inflammation pattern score (EDIP) and mammographic density (MD), as well as the influence of body mass index (BMI) in this relationship.
  • It included 4,145 participants from the Nurses' Health Study, assessing diet through questionnaires and measuring various MD parameters.
  • Results showed an overall negative correlation between EDIP and percent MD, with a significant portion of this relationship explained by differences in BMI, while no strong links were found between EDIP and dense area or grayscale variation.

While the proliferation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives among medical schools and residency training programs has provided important benefits of demographic and experiential diversity among medical trainees, there has not been a similar emphasis upon the importance of moral diversity in medical training. Enhanced attention to the importance of moral diversity and the centrality of conscience to medical practice might allow trainees to better interface with the morally diverse patients they serve, learn important virtues like humility, patience, and tolerance, and deepen their understanding of and appreciation for alternative moral viewpoints among their fellow practitioners.

Physicians-in-training feel uncomfortable coping with the grief they experience while delivering end-of-life care, and medical schools offer minimal formal curricular offerings on end of life care. Few studies have identified what experiences medical students have with death while training or what lessons they are being taught by more senior physicians at bedside. This qualitative study conducted semi-structured interviews prior to and six months into the medical school clinical year.

Bio-based plastics made of food-safe compostable materials, such as thermoplastic starch (TPS), can be designed into films that have potential to replace many non-biodegradable single-use plastic (SUP) items. TPS film characteristics, such as elongation at break and tensile strength, are largely affected by the choice of the plasticizers used in formulation. Our work identifies the mechanical properties and the chemical structural differences between TPS films made with two different plasticizer mixtures that have not yet been compared alongside one another: deep eutectic solvent choline chloride/urea (1:2) (CC:U) and glycerol with an acetic acid catalyst (AA:G).

Blood-based liquid biopsy is increasingly used in clinical care of patients with cancer, and fraction of tumor-derived DNA in circulation (tumor fraction; TFx) has demonstrated clinical validity across multiple cancer types. To determine TFx, shallow whole-genome sequencing of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) can be performed from a single blood sample, using an established computational pipeline (ichorCNA), without prior knowledge of tumor mutations, in a highly cost-effective manner. We describe assay validation of this approach to facilitate broad clinical application, including evaluation of assay sensitivity, precision, repeatability, reproducibility, pre-analytic factors, and DNA quality/quantity.

Preclinical and clinical data suggest that androgen receptor signaling strongly contributes to bladder cancer development. The roles of the androgen receptor in bladder carcinogenesis have obvious implications for understanding the strong male sex bias in this disease and for potential therapeutic strategies as well. In this review, we summarize what is known about androgen receptor signaling in urothelial carcinoma as well as in tumor-infiltrating immune cells, reviewing preclinical and clinical data.

Urothelial cancer is an immune-responsive cancer, but only a subset of patients benefits from immune checkpoint inhibition. Currently, single-agent immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and the combination of pembrolizumab with the antibody-drug conjugate enfortumab vedotin are approved to treat patients with metastatic UC (mUC). Approval of first-line nivolumab in combination with gemcitabine and cisplatin is expected imminently.

Background: Peer-support specialists-individuals with diagnosed mental illnesses who provide support services to other adults with diagnosed mental health issues-often feel stigmatized and undervalued at work, leading to negative personal- and job-related outcomes. Given their important link to positive service user outcomes, this study assessed how peer-support specialists perceive fairness and feel valued in the workplace.

Methods: Peer-support specialists ( = 274) were recruited online from peer-support specialist listservs, social media groups, and patient-run organizations to take a cross-sectional survey that included a 14-item scale on how workplace fairness relates to job satisfaction and four questions on how valued they felt by administrators, clinicians, the people they serve, and fellow peer-support specialists.

Using optical characterization, it is evident that the spin state of the spin crossover molecular complex [Fe{HB(pz)}(bipy)] (pz = tris(pyrazol-1-1y)-borohydride, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) depends on the electric polarization of the adjacent polymer ferroelectric polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) thin film. The role of the PVDF-HFP thin film is significant but complex. The UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements reveals that room temperature switching of the electronic structure of [Fe{HB(pz)}(bipy)] molecules in bilayers of PVDF-HFP/[Fe{HB(pz)}(bipy)] occurs as a function of ferroelectric polarization.
