Background: The increasing number of children attending day care centres (DCCs) in industrialized countries has refocused attention on the occurrence of infections and infectious diseases in these settings.
Objective: To evaluate the agreement between two methods (parent method vs. educator method) for reporting the occurrence of respiratory and diarrhoeal infections.
This paper summarizes the objectives, design, follow-up, and data validation of a cluster-randomized trial of a breastfeeding promotion intervention modeled on the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). Thirty-four hospitals and their affiliated polyclinics in the Republic of Belarus were randomized to receive BFHI training of medical, midwifery, and nursing staffs (experimental group) or to continue their routine practices (control group). All breastfeeding mother-infant dyads were considered eligible for inclusion in the study if the infant was singleton, born at > or = 37 weeks gestation, weighed > or = 2500 grams at birth, and had a 5-minute Apgar score > or = 5, and neither mother nor infant had a medical condition for which breastfeeding was contraindicated.

In the present work, fibrinogen Caracas V is further characterized in order to understand the relationship between the structural defect and thrombophilia. This thrombotic disorder has been attributed to a tight fibrin network responsible for a decreased permeation of flow through the clot, leading to defective thrombus lysis due to a diminished availability of fibrinolytic enzymes to the inner fibrin surface.

Methods And Results: In this comparative, nonrandomized study, 208 consecutive patients who underwent a single or double heart valve replacement with mechanical prostheses were anticoagulated subcutaneously with unfractionated heparin (UH) in the first period (n=106) and LMWH in the second phase (n=102) of the study.

The phosphorylated residue was identified as the first aspartate in the first motif (DXDXT) by mass spectrometry analysis of peptides derived from the phosphorylated enzyme treated with NaBH(4) or alkaline [(18)O]H(2)O. Incubation of native phosphoserine phosphatase with phosphoserine in [(18)O]H(2)O did not result in (18)O incorporation in residue Asp-20, indicating that the phosphoaspartate is hydrolyzed, as in P-type ATPases, by attack of the phosphorus atom.

The protein was expressed in Escherichia coli, purified and shown to be 6-phosphogluconolactonase, the enzyme catalyzing the second step of the pentose phosphate pathway. Sequence analysis indicates that bacterial devB proteins, the C-terminal part of hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and yeast Sol1-4 proteins are most likely also 6-phosphogluconolactonases and that these proteins are related to glucosamine-6-phosphate isomerases.

In the absence of mossy fiber input, the CA3 pyramidal neurons exhibit morphological alterations and rats deprived of dentate granule cells fail to develop kainate-induced epileptic activity in the CA3 pyramidal neurons. Neonatal elimination of the granule cells also impairs learning and memory tasks in adult rats.
