At least one in three women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime. The most commonly sustained IPV-related brain injuries include strangulation-related alterations in consciousness (S-AICs) and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Moreover, survivors of IPV-related S-AICs and/or TBIs often demonstrate psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health crisis with 30% of women over the age of 15 experiencing at least one event in their lifetime. Brain injury (BI) due to head impacts and/or strangulation is a common but understudied part of this experience. Previous research has shown BI from other injury mechanisms can disrupt neurovascular coupling (NVC).

The aetiology of AF in endurance athletes is multifactorial and remains incompletely understood. Despite their unique training demands, AF care in athletes remains largely based on evidence derived from the general population.

The sequencing platforms currently applied require large batch sizes and multiday processing in specialized facilities to perform genotyping by the thousands. However, recent advances in third-generation single-molecule sequencing platforms, such as the Oxford Nanopore minION, provide base calling on portable, pocket-sized sequencers and promise real-time, in-field stock identification of variable batch sizes.

Therefore, this preliminary investigation examined the impact an acute soccer heading bout has on dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) metrics.
Methods: In this preliminary investigation, 40 successful soccer headers were performed in 20 min by 7 male elite soccer players (24.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects at least one in three women worldwide, and up to 92% report symptoms consistent with brain injury (BI). Although a handful of studies have examined different aspects of brain structure and function in this population, none has characterized potential deficits in cognitive-motor function. This knowledge gap was addressed in the current study by having participants who had experienced IPV complete the bimanual Object Hit & Avoid (OHA) task in a Kinesiological Instrument for Normal and Altered Reaching Movement (KINARM) End-Point Laboratory.

In Canada, the Wild Salmon Policy for Pacific salmon was established with the goal of maintaining and restoring healthy and diverse Pacific salmon populations, making conservation of wild salmon and their habitats the highest priority for resource management decision-making. For policy implementation, a new approach to the assessment and management of Chinook salmon and the associated hatchery production and fisheries management are needed.

Salmon status assessments are often conducted on coded-wire-tagged subsets of indicator populations based on assumptions of little differentiation within or among proximal populations. In the current study of southern BC coho salmon () populations, parentage-based tagging (PBT) analysis provided novel information on migration and life-history patterns to test the assumptions of biological homogeneity over limited (generally < 100 km) geographic distances and, potentially, to inform management of fisheries and hatchery broodstocks.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn salmonid parentage-based tagging (PBT) applications, entire hatchery broodstocks are genotyped, and subsequently, progeny can be nonlethally sampled and assigned back to their parents using parentage analysis, thus identifying their hatchery of origin and brood year (i.e., age).

Objectives: To determine the effect of heading a soccer ball on serum neurofilament light (NF-L) protein, plasma tau protein and symptom metrics including total number of symptoms reported and symptom severity scores on the Standardized Concussion Assessment Tool- 3rd edition (SCAT3).
Methods: Eleven male collegiate soccer players were recruited to take part in three experimental conditions including heading, sham and control conditions. Participants were required to perform 40 headers in 20 min in the heading condition, and control 40 soccer balls directed at them with their hands, chest or thigh in the sham condition.
We present analytical expressions for extracting Dixon's bipolar moments in the semi-classical limit from experimental anisotropy parameters of sliced or reconstructed non-sliced images. The current method focuses on images generated by 2 + 1 REMPI (Resonance Enhanced Multi-photon Ionization) and is a necessary extension of our previously published 1 + 1 REMPI equations. Two approaches for applying the new equations, direct inversion and forward convolution, are presented.

We describe a distance-based clustering method using a proximity matrix of genetic distances to partition populations into genetically similar groupings. The optimization heuristic mean-field annealing (MFA) was used to find locally optimal solutions where exhaustive search was not possible. To illustrate this method, we analysed both simulated and real data sets.
