Background: Prior studies have noted gender differences in cognition, imaging, and pathological markers in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subjects. Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), a major controlling factor in the proportion of bioavailable versus bound testosterone and estrogen, has been proposed to contribute to links between hormones and dementia, but has not yet been investigated fully in a prospective biomarker trial.

Objective: This study examined whether, among subjects with MCI, SHBG levels predict future rate of cognitive decline.

Novel statistical methods for integrating genetic and stable isotope data to infer individual-level migratory connectivity.

Methods for determining patterns of migratory connectivity in animal ecology have historically been limited due to logistical challenges. Recent progress in studying migratory bird connectivity has been made using genetic and stable-isotope markers to assign migratory individuals to their breeding grounds. Here, we present a novel Bayesian approach to jointly leverage genetic and isotopic markers and we test its utility on two migratory passerine bird species.

Quality of reproductive health services to limited English proficient (LEP) patients.

Background: Medical patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) frequently receive health care services of suboptimal quality.

Methods: We explored whether clients served with staff interpreters (language-discordant, LDI) receive reproductive health care of lower quality than clients seen by a bilingual clinician (language concordant, LC). We conducted a medical record review of 1,589 reproductive health visits of female and male LEP clients.

Overexpression of a Drosophila homolog of apolipoprotein D leads to increased stress resistance and extended lifespan.

Increased Apolipoprotein D (ApoD) expression has been reported in various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and stroke, and in the aging brain . However, whether ApoD is toxic or a defense is unknown. In a screen to identify genes that protect Drosophila against acute oxidative stress, we isolated a fly homolog of ApoD, Glial Lazarillo (GLaz).
